boot errors...can't start x

Hey, after updating with urpmi (cooker) I get this....(after typing STARTX as root).

 

execue failed for /ect/x11/x (errno 2)
giving up.
xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error

 

Any ideas? Can't use the GUI at all...

I'd be shocked to find that it's related to nvidia.

Hint: NEVER upgrade w/ cooker XFree86, urpmi/rpm unless it's absolutely necessary and drak stuff if you rely on drak stuff.

 

what does /var/log/XFfree86.?.log say?

what does

rpm -qa | grep XFree86

say?

 

Are there any pkgs in /var/cache/urpmi/rpms?

yeah, 15 or so RPMS are in there...nothing to do with X though. some bootloader utils and some kde libs...kopete...

I just did a default 10-CE install and Im getting the updates rt now.

was just installed.

bvc! Thanks so much! installing XFree86-server-4.3-30mdk was all I needed! works great like before now....couple more questions though.

 

If you don't recommend updating XFree86 via urpmi, how should I upgrade?

Also, it looks like I lost all of my MDK specific tools, like the MCC control center. What packages do I need there? And how can I avoid this crap next time?

I use rpmdrake (urpmi frontend). It's much easier to pick just what you want and control things. Basically, let others be the test rats when a new XFree86, rpm, urpmi, drak stuff is released. Check the boards after a week or so and if there are no real problems go ahead and get them.
