  1. *whew* I'm glad I stopped updating cooker so often after a blowout with Xserver a couple weeks ago..... Thanks BVC for making more more cautious...I missed out on this mess for once! Question though....when I installed MDK it was 10RC1...so I've been using cooker sources all the while. Should I change to sources for version 10 or is it too late? Obviously nothing can be done now, I mean when this is all straightened out. Topdog: There is an RPM for AMSN 0.90 that worked great for me in MDK 10. CLICK Its on the amsn page...guess you missed it ;)

    x.org

Ok, so x.org released X11 R6.7 the other day...which is basically XFree86 4.4 without all the nasty issues. It seems fully compatible with just about everything we use (if not everything in xfree). So why aren't we using it yet, and will MDK be dumping XFree86 in favor of it? I see no reason why, X.org are the maintainers of the X standard, lets just dump XFree (they're growing irrelevant now), be done with it, and wait for fd.o to be released. Maybe someone can explain it to me and everyone else. edit: on a side note, Dropline Gnome for Slackware has dumped XFree and gone with X.org, while official Slack has been the only major distro to support XFree86.
  3. It would be amazing if someone could put together a HOW-TO for this seemingly difficult program... synce.sourceforge.net/synce I haven't seen another MDK user (or linux user) who has installed it successfully. I have to keep booting into winblows to use my pocketpc :P
  4. ok, maybe you've heard about this: http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/ Its a NTFS read/write! driver for linux that is safe (?), but a bit slow as it uses wine emulation. Has anyone here tried this with MDK? How did it go?
  5. tightwad ;) I'm fairly new to linux...still learning, and the mdk club really doesn't seem to offer me anything I want, that I can't get elsewhere. Also, while MDK is my distro of choice, 2004 seems it could be the Year of Linux (possibly 2005 maybe?) when you look at up and coming distros like Sun JDS with Looking Glass, Novell's Suse/Ximian KDE/GNOME crossover thing, and of course the one IBM is developing and using at this very moment for company use, and later for public release. Poor MDK seems like it will be left behind once these 3 big dogs release their distros.
  6. http://www003.portalis.it/115/winexx.html this guy seems to have made some legal RPMs of winex (minus the non-GPL content) for mdk. I got mine to install just fine, but couldn't get the setup program to run. Let me know if it works for you.
  7. great stuff...although the videos of Looking Glass really show what its like...if you didnt view them, you should...screenshots don't do Glass justice at all. Great that Sun is really pushing for some innovation like this in linuxland...makes me wonder what IBM has in store for us with the rumored "Blue Linux" distro they're working on! With Sun and IBM putting this stuff out, I really don't think Longhorn stands a chance.
  8. bvc! Thanks so much! installing XFree86-server-4.3-30mdk was all I needed! works great like before now....couple more questions though. If you don't recommend updating XFree86 via urpmi, how should I upgrade? Also, it looks like I lost all of my MDK specific tools, like the MCC control center. What packages do I need there? And how can I avoid this crap next time? Thanks!

  10. Hey, after updating with urpmi (cooker) I get this....(after typing STARTX as root). execue failed for /ect/x11/x (errno 2) giving up. xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error Any ideas? Can't use the GUI at all...
  11. ok fine. reinstallation it is :D thanks anyway
  12. ok, fdisk -l gives me this output: Disk /dev/hda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes 16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 232581 cylinders Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 116041 58484601 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/hda2 116042 232581 58736160 5 Extended /dev/hda5 116042 231525 58203904+ 83 Linux /dev/hda6 231526 232581 532192+ 82 Linux swap hda2 and hda5 overlap? is this the problem? and if so, how do I change this (I know you can, just not HOW)
  13. AH HA!!!!! I think I've had a breakthrough! I wasn't able to try out qtparted as urpmi was messed up....fixed that finally....ran qtparted....and: [root@localhost jt]# qtparted Warning: Unable to align partition properly. This probably means that another partitioning tool generated an incorrect partition table, because it didn't have the correct BIOS geometry. It is safe to ignore, but ignoring may cause (fixable) problems with some boot loaders. No Implementation: Support for opening ntfs file systems is not implemented yet. Error: Filesystem was not cleanly unmounted! You should e2fsck. Modifying an unclean filesystem could cause severe corruption. Now I can't run e2fsck on the NTFS partition. What do I use for that? And I can't unmount my linux partition that I'm using to fix that....knoppix? "may cause fixable problems with bootloaders :D " woohoo! now how do we fix fix fix?
  14. damn, I don't want to reformat. Can't I just...hmm... How about reformatting the second drive and reinstalling windows...and using the map commands from before in lilo for that? And then I could move the files I wanted off the lost partition, and delete it...and resize my linux partition? Will this work? :deal:
