bigjohn
Hi, Just done the latest set of updates. Now my X is failing to start. I've checked the XF86Config-4 and it seemed fine (I've had to change back to the generic nv driver for the moment, so I can get some sort of screen). the file (well, the old file) looked like this <snip> FontPath "unix/:-1" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" #DontZap # disable <Crtl><Alt><BS> (server abort) #DontZoom # disable <Crtl><Alt><KP_+>/<KP_-> (resolution switching) AllowMouseOpenFail # allows the server to start up even if the mouse doesn't work EndSection Section "Module" Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension Load "v4l" # Video for Linux Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "glx" # 3D layer EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard1" Driver "Keyboard" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "gb" Option "XkbOptions" "" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "MouseManPlusPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "monitor1" VendorName "Generic" ModelName "1600x1200 @ 76 Hz" HorizSync 31.5-94.0 VertRefresh 50-90 # Sony Vaio C1(X,XS,VE,VN)? # 1024x480 @ 85.6 Hz, 48 kHz hsync ModeLine "1024x480" 65.00 1024 1032 1176 1344 480 488 494 563 -hsync -vsync # TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output. # 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630 # 768x576 @ 100 Hz, 61.6 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 63.07 768 800 960 1024 576 578 590 616 EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "nVidia Corporation" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce4 (generic)" Driver "nvidia" Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "screen1" Device "device1" Monitor "monitor1" DefaultColorDepth 24 Subsection "Display" Depth 8 Virtual 1280 960 EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 15 Virtual 1280 960 EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 16 Virtual 1280 960 EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Virtual 1280 960 EndSubsection EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "layout1" InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer" Screen "screen1" EndSection And as you can see, I've got the "nvidia" bit changed as well as "Load "glx" uncommented. I've tried the easy option to re-install the nvidia driver from scratch, but now it's telling me that there's no nvidia kernel module, I'll have to do that myself, so I say, yes for the driver to do it and it get's so far before hitting me with make: *** [Select_makefile] Error 1 So, has anyone got any idea's how I get round this ?? regards John
aru
OK, a couple of questions: what kernel are you using? what version if the nvidia driver are you trying to install?
bigjohn
I'm using the latest updates to the 2.6.3-4mdk (though I think that the updates I did at the weekend where for 2.6.3-7mdk sources). The nvidia driver that was configured and running until today's updates is the 1-5336 driver. I'm not sure if it's possible to see the install history - to try and guess which of the updates may have caused this. I'm able to see my desktop with the generic "nv" driver, but get a series of horizontal lines across my monitor, where prior to todays update there was none. regards John

bigjohn
OK, so after having a look round and re, re, re-reading the nvidia install doc's it seems that if I look at [root@johnsPC root]# uname -r 2.6.3-4mdk But after looking back at the /var/log/user.log I can see that at the weekend I did install the updates to the kernel sources 2.6.3-7mdk Mar 21 06:35:21 johnsPC MandrakeUpdate[17022]: [RPM] kernel-source-2.6.3-7mdk installed Mar 21 06:35:29 johnsPC MandrakeUpdate[17022]: [RPM] libkdecore4-3.2-33mdk installed Mar 21 06:35:31 johnsPC MandrakeUpdate[17022]: [RPM] libkdecore4-devel-3.2-33mdk installed Mar 21 06:35:39 johnsPC MandrakeUpdate[17022]: [RPM] kdelibs-common-3.2-33mdk installed Mar 21 06:35:50 johnsPC MandrakeUpdate[17022]: [RPM] kernel-source-2.6.3-4mdk removed So, I'm presuming that this afternoon's update of ???? well, I don't know maybe the qt lib's or kdebase maybe?? have caused this, but I can't correct it because I now have incorrect kernel-sources installed? hence the mismatch means that the nvidia installer won't actually run, to make the correct kernel module? Of course, I could also be "grasping at straw's" because I haven't the faintest idea as to what I'm doing other than blindly install updates as the are released! Any idea's would be much appreciated. regards John <edit> I've just had a quick look round my system (well the software manager), and noticed that the 2.6.3-4 kernel is no longer an option, so for the moment, I've uninstalled the 2.6.3-7 kernel sources. Is it possible to be able to install the 2.6.3-7 kernel and sources via urpmi, so that it replaces the current installed one (and so that it's automatically the default that appears in my lilo) or does this mean a total re-install ? because to get the nvidia installer to work it's gonna need both the kernel and the kernel sources? </edit> Edited March 23, 2004 by bigjohn
bvc
If you want to use the updated kernel you'll either have to change Driver "nvidia" to Driver "nv" Try the current kernel-source (sometimes it works on a slight mismatch) or get the new kernel-source You could always boot to the old/default kernel as well that nvidia is already compiled for. bigjohn
Well, I've cured the problem for the moment bvc. I'd uninstalled the 2.6.3-7mdk kernel sources - thinking that the nvidia installer had worked fine when I'd had the 2.6.3-4mdk sources installed (the -7 version arrived as an update, as I'd mentioned earlier). So on the off chance, I looked on the 3rd CD and bingo there it was. So I've re-installed the 2.6.3-4 sources and then re-run the nvidia installer. Which just leaves the question about updating the kernel and the sources to 2.6.3-7 (I've looked at the available packages and yes, they're both available. So is it just a case of updating them both with urpmi or is there more to it ? I would like to be able to just have the updated versions available - It would prevent me getting confused to hell. regards John p.s. I recall that when I read the reason for the change from 2.6.3-4 to the -7 version it was for bugfixes - hence as i'm trying to be very conscientious with keeping my updates, well updated so that by the time "10 official" is released, my system should (in theory) be at the same stage. bvc
the nvidia driver is kernel specific. New kernel=uninstall nvidia for the old kernel which means installing nvidia for the new kernel which means a new matching kernel-source. Yes....that's all there is to it. william
I had the same problem yesterday while updating only harddrake and its dependencies, my nvidia driver and glx module was changed what made me unable to play for instance tux (my 2yo son's favorite game). I did what bvc suggested, stopping harddrake service to load during the booting and at the same time renaming the nvidia driver and uncommenting that "load glx ....line" and got everything working here. It was just a haddrake updating process!!! My experience here is just to show you that not only a kernel-source update can bring you to the same problem, but a simple harddrake update. sitor
Hello, Just did the updates an hour ago. During the updates a new version of /etc/inittab was placed. In this the default runlevel was set to 3 (no X). As a result my Mandrake did not start X anymore. Simply changing the runlevel in inittab fixed that. Not sure if this is the same cause as what you have. Ciao, Sitor Edited March 31, 2004 by sitor
