cardassianscot
Download the tar ball from Mozilla.org and then untar it somewhere nice like /opt or /usr/local (it cerates its own subdirctory, firefox, I think) as root. To run from a terminal, log in as you (not root), cd to the directory created above and type ./firefox . Or right click on the desktop and create a launcher. Assuming you installed to /opt the command to execute is /opt/firefox/firefox, the working directory is /opt/firefox (you need to set this) and the icon is available from /opt/firefox/icons . You can add a item to the k-menu or gnome-menu using the same settings. If you know how to do it you could also add /opt/firefox to your path or create a small script which changes the directory (or sets the path) and then runs firefox and put it in /usr/bin
pmpatrick
Same problem here but with firefox - absolutely hideous fonts. I've tried all kinds of edits on the /defaults/pref/unix.js file to no avail. The regular mozilla fonts are great(1.4 that came with 9.2). ralph1976
argh... i just got my mx700 side buttons to work in mozilla and konqueror but they don't work in firefox... when i hit "back" or "forward" which worked just fine in the other browser, the page in firefox just jumps back to its beginning... neutro
Well as for AA fonts, you have to install an XFT-enabled mozilla build. I guess. I'm not sure if one is available on PLF or Texstar, but I found one on a site which seems to be down. It was http://www.scottbolander.com/mozilla-xft.html, but it doesn't seem to exist anymore. It had XFT-enabled builds (with the installer) of every major version up to 1.6. There's also a few things to adjust in order to have AA fonts in the menus (and not only the displayed pages). See here for details.

chin808
This site has all three versions including xftftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.mozilla....x/releases/0.8/ I put the Firebird gtk version in my usr/local directory and made a shortcut to the shell script to open it, "MozillaFirebird" on the desktop Works perfect :)
ralph1976
@neutro & anon: i wasn't complaining about the fonts in firefox - it has beatiful fonts - but about the fonts in mozilla (non-rpm)...
Pocatello
Firefox fonts are ugly with Mandrake 9.2, I spent all day trying to find the best settings to no avail.
Qchem
The problem with the moz fonts is also due to XFS vs XFT2. You can probably find some xft enabled rpm builds around too, compiling it yourself takes ages and eats disk space. Don't suppose that really helps.... :P
neutro
The link I mentioned above is back to life. You can get installers for XFT2-enabled Mozilla here. By default it installs in /usr/local. It works great!
