Urza9814
Thought this would be helpful to any newbies (like myself)...a topic for any progs you think are essential for any linux user...I myself am looking for firewalls, anti-virus, and just other cool progs I don't have :-P Even if it comes with linux, you can still say it (just make sure you specify that) because some newbies may not install it, or may not even know it exists...I always check my drive before I DL anything, because there are so many programs in there not listed on my menu thing :-P

bvc
anacronAnacron (like `anac(h)ronistic') is a periodic command scheduler. It executes commands at intervals specified in days. Unlike cron, it does not assume that the system is running continuously. It can therefore be used to control the execution of daily, weekly and monthly jobs (or anything with a period of n days), on systems that don't run 24 hours a day. When installed and configured properly, Anacron will make sure that the commands are run at the specified intervals as closely as machine-uptime permits. This package is pre-configured to execute the daily jobs of the Mandrake system. You should install this program if your system isn't powered on 24 hours a day to make sure the maintenance jobs of other Mandrake packages are executed each day. TopDog
The ones I've installed and use often that didn't come with the distro are: - Opera 7.23 (web browser) - Kopete 0.74 (multiple IM client) - GKrellM 2.1 (system monitoring) - GTK Gnutella (P2P client)
iphitus
You dont need anti Virus on linux urza!!!! And ya didnt look hard on that page for firewall: Firewall (packet filtering) iptables or more outdated ipchains (console, standard). Front ends: 1) Kmyfirewall. 2) Easy Firewall Generator. 3) Firewall Builder. 4) Shorewall. 5) Guarddog. 6) FireStarter. 7) Smoothwall. [Prop] 8) IPCop. 9) Zorp. Try the one that comes with Mandrake. Its based on shorewall and is fine for day to day use
Urza9814
lol...I realize I shouldn't need antivirus or a firewall on linux...but I'm paranoid...on windows I had 3 firewalls, 3 antivirus, and 2 spyware/adware scanners...and an IP tracker that I used with my firewall when it got a hack attempt (though the firewall's was better :-P) ...a firewall comes with linux??? :-P does it help with popups? I don't get many...mozilla stops most...but I still get some...
Gowator
Mozilla/Opera let you choose the popup blocking level, hold on every browser on earth except IE do..... (including safari on Mac) Anti-Virus Its good practice to virus scan your email's..... Using linux is like being a cholera carrier.... you cant catch it but you can spread it. My advice is install the PLF sources into urpmi (search on easy urpmi for instructions) and then browse the packages available. The best app is the one you need right now.... Last week it was Jpilot as it saved my ass backing up my palm. Next week it will be something different..... Alternatively say what you wanna do and someone will post their preferred linux app to do it.... The best linux-only app has to be linuxconf... However the best app ever IMHO is webmin..... It does everything from admin of a firewall to backups and package management. Whatever version of Linux/BSD/UNIX/Mac-OSX you use the interface and modules are the same meaning all the time you expend learning how to tune your firewall isn't wasted.
