Bullshit! You can sync WinCE devices with Linux using synce: http://synce.sourceforge.net/synce/

Sorry, I've been looking for something like this, but not found it... thanks for the link :D

It looks to me like OPIE is just for iPaq's and Zaurus, anyone tried to get linux on a Dell Axim X5? I have one lying around doing nothing... would be cool having OPIE or similar on it...

[i find that most of the newer mobile phones do everything that a PDA was traditionally used for, and most of them are 'free' with a contract. The Sony-Ericsson's are awesome.

I have a SE T610, I sync it with Evolution using Multisync with the IrMC plugin, an Epox  Bluetooth dongle and I transfer files with Gnome-Obex-Server (bluetooth).

Yes, I agree. That's what I would have bought for work (e.g. an Ericsson P900) if I could choose. This would mean one less device to carry. And the phone is always with me anyway.

So pure PDAs (without phone or wireless LAN) will disappear from the market soon.

TopDog...if you goto to handheld.org and look at the platform you will see what is compatible with their linux distro. Currently, the best bet is a 3xxx-series Ipaq. I've been looking for a used or refurnished one for cheap to install linux on.

What do you mean by "The lucky country"?

You can always buy them on ebay and many people will ship anywhere if you ask.

Remember, get the sl-5500, NOT the 5600. The 5600 only has a fster CPU. but it performs slower, and has loess total memory.

I hope not - I don't want an "all in one" solution, I like having a PDA and a phone which are seperate. It would be nice to sync the address books on the phone and PDA though...

So how do you talk on the phone while checking an email????

Personally I think all-in-one is over rated....

Modularity is the key....

I use my palm to unlock the car. change channel and take notes whilst on the phone, you can't do that with it stuck to your ear :D

Ok handsfree might work but the all-uin-one jack of all trades is never going to be great at anything... IMHO.

Sure it will play MP3's or whatever but so does a dedicated player that you can synch while on the phone etc.

I don't want a phone so big I can read the screen and my sony-erik T68i only does WAP and even then its a pain checking email.....

Just for the record my palm no longer synch's at work.....even though its a work palm???? I got a new PC and somehow they missed the synch software....

DOH... and I can't install it myself.... (not allowed)

So I boot knoppix from Cd and synch with my USB dongle....

It just worked straight away from jpilot :D

I also prefer the modular approach really, it's just cheaper getting it all in one. My T610 was free with my cell contract, it has a camera I never use along with many other nifty functions I haven't even looked at, but it was free! You can't beat that, I'm afraid.

Just a word of advice, stay away from the 19XX series of iPaqs as Familiar Linux WILL NOT run on them... yet.

It's strange to me how Sharp went to the trouble of making the Zaurus run Linux, but not sync with Linux! (not out-of-the-box anyway). That's a little lame IMHO.

My only problem with Palm OS is that it crashes frequently, but the last time I used it was with 3.x so I'm sure it would be better now. Also, Handspring and Sony make better Palm hardware then Palm themselves (although Palm owns Handspring, so that isn't completely true).

I've owned two Palms, a Handspring and an iPaq and I almost bought a Clie - if I could go back I would've rather bought the Clie, they are the best IMO, the iPaqs generally have the most memory on them, vital if you plan to use it as an mp3/ogg player as well ;)

I think LAME is an understatement!!!!

Its immoral

They get a FREE OS becuase of the work of opensource programmers worldwide and then sell it without even giving back anything.,...

IMHO this is worse than manufactuerers WHO don't even acknolwedge the existance of linux....

IMVHO The GPL needs updating to fix this type of parasitic behaviour.... certainly we shouldn't encourage it by buying one...

This is the same with NETGEAR.... who use it in their routers yet don't support Linux except by accident...

Im all for embedded linux solutions BUT it should be mandatory for them to work with LINUX....

To be honest if it worked with linux but not windows Id get some satisfaction.....

My friend got an early clie and had problems synching with his MAC... he had to run virtual PC.... even after running jpilot etc. he had probs, gave it to his girlfriend and got a palm (shrug)

I have to admit it was SLOW....

The MP3 and stuff worked fine but when using it as a browser for mappy the maops just scrolled way to slow,,, even when they were static... and this is in comparison to my aging mono palm from work....

It sure LOOKED nice though....

Ive also been disapointed with my T68i - Its really slow too.

Apparently its undrclocked to extend battery life and you can hack em, I just never bothered.... At the end of the day its a phone....

most of the X11 zaurus stuff is only for the c7xx models. They are clamshell devices with VGA screens. There was a debian on zaurus project some time ago, but X sucks ass on the sl5500 and 5600.

If you ahve the dough, a c760 or 860 is a GREAT way to go. You can install your choice of the cack x11 rom or the gentoo for zaurus rom. If you want a 5500, go with OpenZaurus.

If you do go with one of the clamshell devices, you will have to have it imported from japan as they don't sell them in this county. Check with http://www.thekompany.com comes with a translated ROM,. but all the docs are in japanese. Also, most of the software you will want will need to be compiled for the Xscale cpu.
