johnisrip
I am a newbie to Linux and tired of Windoze. I have Mandrake 9.2 and have DHCP enabled for the networking. When I look at the configuration screen, it shows I have an IP address from my Windows Server but the network shows not connected. And when tring to access the internet from kmail or konquerer it doesn't work. Gateway is set to the server just like the rest of the Win98 clients are. But, when I put in a FIXED IP, the internet works. What's wrong?
tyme
this is a problem I've run into a few times, and could never figure exactly _why_ it happens, although what seems to be an explanation is posted here all I can tell you is if a fixed IP works, stick with that. Using a fixed IP shouldn't cause any issues.
Ixthusdan
I also have encountered this problem, even when I have done nothing with my system! Fixed ip always works, and I'll switch back to dhcp later, and it works. I have no idea why. I know it's not my box, because when this is happening in Mandrake, I can use dhcp fine in the other installed linux distro (currently SuSE) and windex. It is an infrequent occurance, maybe every 3-4 months.
