best developer programs

Recommended Posts

I would like peoples opinions on what the best developer programs/environments are (such as gtkmm, eclipse, etc). Mostly I'm looking at C++, Java, GTK2+ stuff, but no QT (for now). Specifically object-oriented languages. Post your thoughts :)

im learning gtkmm, it rocks! its easier than standard GTK and it's got a more C++ like workings.

I am using anjuta, which also rocks. reminds me of an old favourite, back on windows, Dev-C++, which does happen to be supported by gtkmm so you can be crossplatform too. :D

Here are my picks

Java - Netbeans

C/C++ - Anjuta*

Anything else - Emacs or jEdit

I have had some stability problems with Anjuta running on KDE on Mandrake.

As for installing it, select some sources and simply type in urpmi anjuta. In addition, I believe there is a copy of it on the 9.2 CDs.

I have tried soooo many IDEs for Java - and, as long as you can find the plugins for what you need, Eclipse beats them all hands down.

The only problem with eclipse is that it's only as good as the plugins you have. If you can find a plugin that does the job you need then IMHO the basic environment is second to none

One word: GNUstep.

http://www.gnustep.org

Portable to MacOS-X and Windows (ok, the latter somewhat), completely ObjectiveC based but if you don't like it, take Java, C++, whatever, EXCELLENT framework (over 90% compatible to Cocoa) etc. etc. etc.

There's also a LiveCD in case you don't want to dick around with your main system:

Be adviced, though, that GNUstep isn't "done", yet. There's been a substantial update just a couple of days ago, but we're still on versions 0.9.2 for the backend / gui part of the framework. Still: Give it a shot.
