static
Tired of hearing about how fast and cool the new 2.6 kernel is but you don't know how to get it installed? Not sure what a kernel is but love speed? This is for you. Go to this link and download the kernel 2.6 rpm Add that same link to your Software Media Manager under Configuration >> Packaging Open a console and cd to the directory where you saved the kernel rpm type "urpmi kernel-2.6.filename" Reboot Choose 2.6 at the lilo bootloader, and enjoy! Go back into Software Media Manager and uncheck the "Enable" box for the cooker link you added in step 2. Optionally, go into the Mandrake Control Center, go to Boot, and rename the 2.6 in lilo to something cool. It's that easy! I'll edit this post tomorrow to be sure the link is right and to add some pics to clarify.
aRTee
That's very cool! But kids, remember that all nvidia proprietary driver users will have to install the sources too and run the nvidia driver install script... Or revert to the nv driver, i.e. live without 3d accelleration. Edited January 16, 2004 by aRTee
bvc
not to be picky or anything :P but, if you're already in mcc adding the source, why download it then use urpmi? Just open rpmdrake+>Serach for kernel>Select it>Click Install>done :D or do it all with urpmi* :D Edited January 16, 2004 by bvc
Ixthusdan
Mandrake says that using MCC to install a kernel is a problem. Please use the method described with urpmi or rpm -ivh to install a new kernel. B)
static
Yeah - I wrote the above steps because I know they work. (Just being cautious.) aRTee's right - nVidia drivers would need to be installed if you upgrade; but it'd be worth it!
Guest Adriano
It panics on me... I think I'll have to compile it myself or wait until 2.6.1 is RPMed... The error message ends with "Tries to kill init!".
fuzzylizard
Cool, it worked. Now using kernel 2.6.0-1. Hmm... So far the only difference that I see is the stupid picture at the top of the boot screen. (Who is the guy inside of the heart?) Thanks for the instructions. Ixthusdan
Yeah, you're right. It does specifically say Mandrake update. I guess I still just trust the manual method!
fuzzylizard
I think that's Warley! Ignorant question, but who is Warley?
aRTee
Everything went fine -- except the nvidia proprietary driver installation. Note: I took the 2.6.0-1mdk-i686-up-4GB kernel (I have 1GB of RAM, and I'll use it too!) The message I got was this: Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface -> License accepted. -> There appears to already be a driver installed on your system (version: 1.0- 5328). As part of installing this driver (version: 1.0-5328), the existing driver will be uninstalled. Are you sure you want to continue? ('no' will a bort installation) (Answer: Yes) -> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you li ke the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel f rom the NVIDIA ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com)? (Answer: No) -> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; this means that the installer will need to compile a new kernel interface. ERROR: The kernel header file '/lib/modules/2.6.0-1mdk-i686-up-4GB/build/include/linux/modversions.h' does not exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel header files in '/lib/modules/2.6.0-1mdk-i686-up-4GB/build/include' have not been configured. ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com. Darn! Any hints or tips? Apart from that (now just using the nv driver, which works fine) -- my webcam and tvcard are not working; did something change in the v4l drivers? Also, my lm-sensors don't work (have no output in gkrellm... ). Oh, and my IR remote (from the tv card) also stopped working, don't know if that is related... Audio is fine, as is video/dvd, so no worries there. Didn't try the cdrw yet...
bvc
nvidia for 2.6 requires a patch. This ftp://mandrake-forum.org/pub/Nvidia/nvidia-kernel_2.6/ is a hacked nvidia-installer with the patch. Anon, where's the new? http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?sho...topic=10827&hl= here's all of them http://www.sh.nu/download/nvidia/linux-2.6/ I use http://www.sh.nu/download/nvidia/linux-2.6...0-5328-pkg0.run the new has much better 2D performance. aRTee
That worked better, thanks bvc! Now on to getting my tv-card to work, lmsensors, and my remote. (managed to load the modules for the tv-card and the webcam, xawtv segfaults and the remote doesn't work, nor does lm-sensors...) But I think I better open a topic in the hardware section... :)
bvc
no lmsensors for 2.6. Ain't that a..... If you get it to work, please let me know.
