Peppercorn
I have installed the 2.6 kernel and /dev/dsp is no longer there?? Therefore I have no sound. Does anyone know a workaround for this or a site specifically designed for 2.6 in Mandrake? Thanks for any help.
Steve Scrimpshire
Were you using alsa or oss? What's your sound card and what driver were you using originally?
Peppercorn
Firstly thanks for the reply! I was using Alsa in the 2.4 kernel with the 1712 ice driver. The soundcard is a Hoontech dsp "something??" I had no hassles at all with the 2.4 kernel fom install onwards. I just assumed that the 2.6 would 'borrow' all that info from the previous kernel. I am obviously mistaken! What do you think might cause it?? Edited January 17, 2004 by Peppercorn
Steve Scrimpshire
Well, technically, it should inherit all that, if you installed the kernel from RPM. If you compiled it yourself, you may have not chosen support for that driver. What could be happening is that it is pure coincidence and maybe just that Alsa is not starting. Try as root in a console: service alsa start and see if you get any errors. If it says something about alsa already running, try service alsa restart or service alsa stop && service alsa start Also try modprobe <<name of driver without these crazy brackets around it>> in between, before or after these steps. Please report back here any progress. Edited January 17, 2004 by Steve Scrimpshire
