johanl
Hello, I have some questions about upgrading the Linux kernel. At the moment I am running Mandrake 9.1 on my server, it's a Celeron 1300 with 512mb so I installed Mandrake pretty complete, with KDE and Mandrake Control Center. Is it easy to upgrade the kernel sort of automatically, in the way windowsupdate.com works? Is it also easy to make a backup of the kernel which you can restore in about 1 minute? Thanks
Qchem
The only easy way to upgrade the kernel is to find a compatible rpm for the kernel you want - be warned the jump to 2.6.x from 2.4.x can be bumpy! Just don't remove the old kernel and keep its entry in your bootloader, means you don't need any fancy roll-back mechani.
bvc
the old way is still the easiest, fastest, and safest. Find the kernel you want on a mirror>download to your home dir>open a terminal and su to root>rpm -ivh kernel-x.x.x-x.i586.mdk.rpm>reboot and try it.
