USB3

I have a new Mainboard Gigabyte 790XT-USB3 and a Vantec NexStar USB3 Dual Bay Hard Drive Docking Station connected by a USB3 Cable.

When I have the cable plugged into a usb2 socket on the Mainboard I have the SATA II HDD appear in the Device Icon on the Panel as is expected and can be opened normally.

However when it is plugged into one of the USB3 Mainboard outlets, it usually does not appear. On a couple of occasions that it has appeared, when one of the partitions is clicked on to open it, the drive disappears from sight. Note that the USB3 is set to enabled in the bios.

Is there something I am missing here somewhere in the Bios setup or elsewhere ???.

Any ideas please.

Cheers. John.

Hi John,

I haven't any USB3 stuff, so the only thing I can suggest (no gui method I'm afraid) :(

1. Open a console window and su to root.

2. Type dmesg

3. Connect the device to a USB3 port.

4. Type dmesg again

see if anything comes up, and perhaps post the results here so we can take a look, maybe it will help.

Hi John,

What kernel version? I've been searching based on your dmesg results and see problems with the 2.6.37 kernel. So just wondering what kernel you've got. From a console (sorry):

uname -r

Hi Ian.

2.6.33.7-desktop-2mnb

I am also going to do a firmware upgrade of the Vantec Dock since I see one is available and it mentions about changes in USB3 drivers. Downloaded it but need Windows (revulsion) to install it so will be using a neighbors machine to do it and see if that is the answer.

Cheers. John.

PS I don't mind simple CLIs such as you ask for so no sorrys needed. :-)

Hi John,

When I was checking this yesterday, I saw people complaining of problems and similar errors you get with a 2.6.37 kernel. They say performance was worse than in previous kernels. So, there could be one of a few possibilities.

1. Could be that you need a newer kernel for your device to work correctly - maybe it's not completely support in 2.6.33

2. Maybe the firmware, that you're going to try and update now.

There is a chance with an updated kernel yours might work better, however, I couldn't tell you if it would work good with 2.6.37 or not. Maybe it would, or maybe you would also experience problems with this kernel. I'd check the packages and see if there is a later kernel accessible in urpmi as they normally did provide some kernel-linus or something which was much much newer. It would need to be newer than 2.6.33 but maybe not exactly 2.6.37, so something in between, or newer than 2.6.37.

Try the firmware first and see if it makes a difference, but I think a newer kernel would be a good shot.

Hi Ian.

I did update the firmware using a neighbors computer (needed Windows to do it.............Revulsion).

Made no difference. I will try the kernel approach that you suggest and see how I go.

Cheers. John.

Hi Ian.

I downloaded and installed Kubuntu on another spare partition. Apart from the fact that it was difficult to negotiate and the fact that it is not in the class of Mandriva, it used the 2.6.35-27 kernel.

The USB3 worked spectacularly well. Was even able to view my saved personal Videos from the Hard Drive without any problems what so ever.

So the trouble is either Mandriva or the behind the times kernels that Mandriva is using in 2010.2 and/or the reputed troublesome 2.6.37 in 2011-beta2.

As an aside, I have found that trying to delete packages in 2011-beta2 causes an error so packages cannot be deleted via the MCC but only by using urpme in Konsole.

I am going to see if I can download a progressive string of kernels in 22011-beta2 from Cooker and see if there is some point where the problem disappears.

I've plenty of time to fool around, maybe a little. :-)

Cheers. John.

Hi John,

Just check the list of kernels available in Mandy 2010.2, there are some newer ones there, even to 2.6.34 from what I was checking the other day on the internet, so you should find something.

You can quickly filter with:

urpmf --name kernel

from the console, but in MCC you can also filter packages to install with kernel in the name, and find something suitable. No need to go to extremes with cooker kernels.

I decided to try a number of OSs and got the results I discuss below.

I can now say that Fedora would be the very last of the major Linux OSs that I would ever consider using full time. Sure it is glitzy and sharp but what an agony and a pain in the a**e to install and setup. It seems to take 2 to 3 times as long to install and setup plus 3 times the effort compared to Mandriva. One such annoyance, among many, is it refuses to let you run an Account without a password.....lack of choice....yes I know it is all about security.....blah, blah, blah.

OpenSUSE wasn't too bad. But in the end Mandriva still has the edge on all of them with ease of installing and setting up. Mandriva MCC is what makes it all so so easy. :)

Kubuntu looked promising but having to basically go Live before you can install it is a bit of a deal breaker. I also tried its direct install which is text based only, but is so tricky to follow that it screwed up the partitions I had set up on the Hard Drive. Since it was a different HDD to my Main OS then no real damage was done.

It was the only one which allowed my Dual HDD USD3 Dock to work as USB3 and it used kernel-desktop-2.6.35-27.

Kernel-desktop-2.6.37-3 in Mageia Alpha1 didn't run the Dock in USB3 mode but that doesn't really mean anything at this stage of Mageia development.

Kernel-desktop-2.6.34-12 in openSuse didnt work the Dock either.

Kernel-desktop-2.6.35.11-83 in Fedora-14 also failed to work the Dock as USB3.

It would seem at this stage that it is a kernel deficiency of only just now starting to come to grips with USB3, or Kubuntu are the only ones to have seen and fixed the problem. I am leaning towards the former scenario.

Mandriva 2011 doesn't seem too promising if it is sticking to the kernels being used thus far because the Dock doesn't work in the USB3 mode with it either.

Cheers. John.

It shouldn't be a text-based install for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, etc, because they all allow you to install in GUI mode. Normally the LiveCD had an installer which you launched once in KDE/Gnome and it was all GUI-based. The same for the last few installs I did by booting directly for install, was all GUI mode without having to launch the installer from the desktop. It's been like this for a while now. I'm not sure how you managed to get the text-based installer. Admittedly I use the Ubuntu CD, rather than Kubuntu, but they should be the same. Ubuntu is Gnome-based, but even after an install with this, I can get KDE simply enough.

Hi Ian. I can assure you they are likely not the same. Yes it was a CD and not a DVD. The 1st. option is a Launch (Gui) and the 2nd. option is Install (text mode). I did it both ways.

Doesn't matter anyhow since I won't be using it in the future. I only did it for the experience.

Cheers. John.

Experience is good, it always comes in handy :)

I installed Ubuntu 10.04, although from what I remember it was all in a GUI. The alternate CD was text based.
