What version of Gaim are you running? Older versions do not support the MSN 9 protocol, I use version 0.72 and it works perfectly.

You almost certainly have a DNS problem as some sites are not resolving, it is not a connection or firewall problem, because other sites are working. Contact your ISP and get an alternative DNS server address and see if that works.;)

GAIM

GAIM is multiprotocol so uses many different ports depending on what protcol its using.

Its probable that these ports are being blocked by the firewall.

Off the top of my head I don't remember which port msn for instance uses but either someone else help me or google on MSN port or perhaps its in the GAIM documentation?

IF the DNS is working then its probably just these ports being blocked on the firewall. In the advanced settings you might even have a option listed by service as opposed to ports, I have a Belikin one that does that, you choose the service by name (ie MSN) and it adds that to the allowed ports.

:D Hope that helps

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi,

First of all, I have never been able to get GAIM working through a firewall (and I have been trying for a long while).

I suggest having a look at this site:

AMSN P9

It has a clone of MSN messenger there which is both easy to install and looks almost identical to the actual thing. It also has the standard MSGR connections dialog within the preferences menu.

Hope this is of some help.
