  1. Great - next thing might be to install the 7167 Nvidia driver for your vid card. Glad you're finding stuff in tips and tricks. There are other how-to's in this forum that will help lots. Expect things to break for a while and have fun learning to fix them, and Linux will become a frient for you. Kristi
  2. You may not have noticed - it took me a bunch of installs to get it - that where it asks you for your vid card and you choose genericFX, next you get to choose your monitor, and to do that you click on "vendor" mine's a viewsonic, so I then click on viewsonic, mine's a A75f so I then click on A75f - this is very important: it then gives you a choice of some resolutions - I think those are the only ones available to you in that install. Sometimes, as Linux improves, or as the driver that you haven't installed yet, improves, you get more. REMEMBER, at this point you are using the generic driver that's in the kern. I remember Xandros included the latest Nvidia driver in the release. - Mandriva doesn't. There is a short series of instructions to do that and You might take a look at tips and tricks in the forum,. Anyway, to change your resolution, I can not help you. I know it modified xorg.conf and a companion file in X11, but I believe it probably modified something else. I think your best bet is to reinstall. That's why I left for a few hours - I did about 4 install and cooker builds trying to get a 2006 that worked, but failed miserably, so I'm back on a rudimentary 2005. I will be gon tomorrow afternoon but will try to be around to help you tomorrrow evening. HANG IN THERE!!! Once you've done it, it's seem easy, but right now it's like trying to communicate with a wall - my walls don't communicate very well! Kristi "sound is another thing that you should probably ask before you change - I don't think other stuff is as critical. You will learn to make backups of the stuff on your home partition (or in your user folder, ) so you don't loose so much when you re-install. nite.
  3. humph - if I know so damn much how come I can't get the stupid cooker to print?????????
  4. that apparently hosed X. You do not want to hose X bad bad bad. I assume you changed the resolution in kde, yes? EDIT reinstall. when you are reinstalling assure that you select the correct generic board (FX in your case, If you can, on the next screen, choose VENDOR and select your monitor. on the next screen select the res you want forever. click okay. Before you change your res on Linux talk to someone here who knows a hell of a lot more about it than I d because you WILL find your self bopping around X and you will have to know how to change modules, what modules to change, and exactly what info to put where to get an allowable res. Sorry about that. Kristi
  5. Did you put on the Nvidia driver? Did you change anything in xorg.conf? Did you change anything in modprobe.preload?
  6. Please tell me what type of motherboard, and what type of videocard.
  7. Not a prob. If username is you, type "kde". If the user is "root", (this will edit inittab in /etc) do cd /etc vi inittab arrow down about 10 lines to the line "id:3:initdefault:" arrow over to the 3 type i this will put you in insert mode. The delete key will delete the 3 typing 5 will add a 5 now it should look like id:5:initdefault: hit ESC this gets you out of insert mode type :wq and hit enter that will save it remember that : is shift : type reboot or do atl-ctrl-del and you will come into user kde. inittab controls where you go on a boot Kristi
  8. Next time in Linux, go to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and tell me what the mouse section looks like - for example, mine is like this (mine is a wired, optical Logitech mousemanM-BD53) Kristi
  9. Yeah, you may have to power off from windows and then power on and boot into Linux. What's your mobo? Kristi
  10. 1) they should burn just fine. 2 if MCC or Mandriva install does the partition delete you should be okay. Jusy don't let it douch HD0 (drive 1) Kristi
  11. definitely agree with Cannonfodder, once you've got 2005 in your hands! EDIT - Cannonfodder, just noticed all your posts up there - DUH - you take precidence if I contradicted anything you said. Kristi
  12. the latest version is 2005LimitedEdition aka 2005LE aka 2005 (used to be called 10.2) http://www1.mandrivalinux.com/en-us/ftp.php3 Look bottom right. Looks like it's free now for 3CDs or DVD. They want you to join the club and if you can spare $66 become a standard member (that's what I did), but the link is free. but support MDV if you can it IS important... here's a link to ciril which should be pretty fast ftp://ftp.ciril.fr/pub/linux/mandrakelinu.../iso/10.2/i586/ I personally prefer to use azureus because it's infinitely restartable and these are 700mb or 2gb files. The bittorrent pointers are way the hell halfway down the first link I gave you Don't forget to grab the related mdsum file and checksum what you've downloaded. (if you bittorent/Azureus, the checksum folder comes with it but DO NOT LOOK AT IT TILL THE BITTORENT IS COMPLETED) Any questions - holler Kristi
  13. Either 7tools or acronis trueimage hosed my partition table. Do not let either do anything to HD0. I believe it is safe to let MDV install do anything it wants to HD1 and it will probably tell you the partition table is hosed and it will have to rewrite it - this is okay if it's the second HD. If the first drive's partition table is hosed, you can use terabyte's IMAGE on floppy to back up each partition to a free (new, if necessary) partition as FILE IMAGES, blow HDO with bootitng management software, and recreate the mbr, and then stick IMAGE back in and restore the images one by one, XP first. I do not know if XP will boot after this. Kristi (I'm going under for a half hour to regen and try cooker again)
  14. I got 7 tools and Acronis and learned to mistrust both. Ghost requires that it mark a partition. You can try terabyte's bootitng for partition work, but I don't really trust it either. MCC under 10.1 or 10.2/2005 will do it just fine. I saw nothing in this thread about you're having a wireless mouse (until I asked) - who told you that it wouldn't work on 2005? I have zero experience with wireless mouses but a lot of people here do. Just start a new thread with a title something like "how install 2005 with wireless mouse" or somesuch, It's easy to mount your fat partitions in MCC and view use them with 2005. I put lots of my backups on a fat partition so if I loose MDV, I can at least go to XP, unzip the backup and get what I need, like a password or something, or how many yearws I've had Alzheimers. I quad boot to (theoretically) XP(works), 98SE (it doesn't work), DOS (I haven't checked in a couple of months), and MDV 2005. The last time I was on XP was to check the nic and, yes, Comcast was f**ked. I converted everything off XP about 6 months ago to Xandros. after 4 months of that I moved to mandriva and have been playing with the 2006 cooker (and losing at the moment ) I LOVE Mandriva. Many Linuxes do not play well with each other. Xandros refused to see MDV. I believe MDV returned the favor (they both use lilo. While running MDV, I did find I could gen ubuntu/kubuntu, and boot eitherusing GRUB installed to mbr on second HD. I did this twice but imho ubuntu and especially kubuntu needs another 2 years to get where MDV is now. I have tried Fedora core 3 (before I knew anything so that doesn't count), Fedora core 4 test1 (nogo) and Fedora c4t2 (nogo - nice olive drab empty screen, though - puce). I keep my /home on a separate EXT3 partition so I can easily gen other things and not lose anything - I have not, however, found anything other than MDV that plays nice, or even wanted to look at my /home partition. I also have NeverWinterNights on a separate (reiserfs) partition that's easy to mount with MCC and plays nicely (I have a Nvidia card so I have to put on the driver - takes 2 minutes - no big woop.) If you can bring yourself to do it, grab 2005 and install that. if you need a download try bittorrent or azureus or if you have bad luck with that ask and you can get a ftp route. Or I could send you a copy of my DVD if you're conus and MDV is okay with it. Kristi
  15. Hi and welcome! 1 ) I'd wait a week before deleting that folder! B) 2) what kind of mouse do you have and I'll go back and check this whole thread - I'm using 2005 which was 10.2 so there will be some differences. I'd love to get you current because i think there's more folks that will be able to answer your questions, but let's go slowly. What mouse? Kristi
  16. Jumping in here - 1 ) right click on toolbar (bottom thing) , click configure panel, click menues tab: make sure you have "find" and "terminal sessions" checked, and any other toys you would like to appear when you click MENU(bottom left) Underneath that click "show hidden files and leave at 30. Under that click "show the applications most frequently used" and set the number to 10 or whatever. Look around in here - this is your playground. 2 ) click MENU, System, Configuration, Configure your desktop. Look around in here - this is your playground (mostly) 3 ) click MENU, System, Configuration, Configure your Computer (THIS IS also called "MCC" by lots of users here. Click Preference/expert. Look around in here. Some damn powerful stuff here - not your playground but definitely your workbench!!! 4) firefox (by the by, I thought that came installed in 2005 and is found in MENU, internet, webbrowsers. That is the one at /usr/wherever. 5) firefox in your /home - rename the top folder to firefoxold or something (I use konqueror as file mgr) and see if the other firefox still works. it should because the variables are stored in /home/<user>/.mozilla etc (. means "hidden file" - turn on view, hidden files in konqueror to see them.) 6 ) Setup up konqueror1. Go to MENU internet webbrowsers and drag the konqueror iconot the tray. right click on it and choose properties. Change tab application, line command to say "kdesu konqueror". Click advanced options at bottom and check box run as another user and fill in "root" (don't use these quotes!!!). go back to the General tab, click on the icon and choose "action" and a nice big red x so you will remember that this is a root file mgr. 6a ) make the size and position of konqueror as you like, click window and choose "show navigation panel. Click settings and choose "Save view profile "web browsing": check both boxes at the bottom and click save. By the by, that little box in the upper right of Konqueror IS google. Same with firefox (unless you change them, of course) repeat 6 and 6a but without the kdesu and root thing and you will have both a root and a non-root file mgr on your task tray. Hope all that helps, but if you have questions, that's how we learn!!! Kristi
  17. Any ideas? It seems like it's trying to convert everything to postscript and print it with Ghostscript. Thanks for your time!! Kristi
  18. afaik, ports are a ) "open" - they (your computer) will acknowledge a ping and ask what you would like to send it. Bad unless you are using that port and know that only what you want is getting through. b ) "closed" they will acknowledge a ping but not receive data. This tells a hacker that there is a computer there, and that that port will respond (if negatively). Depending on the port, and the response, the hacker may persist with different commands/data, and try to get an opening. c ) "stealth" your computer receives the other computer's ping but does nothing. The other computer does not know if there is a computer/port there or not and will probably go waste time elsewhere. Kristi EDIT - ports are by default closed or open. A firewall is what sets up the rules in the Linux IPtableV4, and determines what is closed or stealthed.
  19. I don't know shorewall, though I tried to learn it a bit. Guard just seemed easier to me at the time so I went with it. Probably neither one is "best" but I'd like to hear from other folks who know shorewall :D Kristi
  20. Will do - just didn't want to put you guys out... :woops: Thanks Kristi
  21. It's a cooker only prob - I had it posted for a day and got no interest so I took it down (damned impatient little critter ain't I.) read Bugzilla 15851 and 15851 (below)and then if you want more or specifics, I'd be glad to oblige. I have to be at 2006 cooker fully updated, though so after you ask it will take me about 1/2 hour (I'm on clean 2005 right now) Thanks for your interest!!!! Kristi I had not heard ANYTHING on cooker till I saw 15851 Kristi This was in the original first post: attempt to use kwrite to print text doc (debug on) Run kate in root console: (I originally had all this stuff in that first post...) Thanks for your interest
  22. Well, glad you got it going, but don't hesitate to hop in here also for refinement questions. I'm no expert but there are a bunch here who can help! Kristi
  23. Bugzilla 15851 and 15852 but nothing's being done with them - not enough people have the prob. wish I had a workaround. (Prob is fully fleshed out a few posts down - it's huge - sorry. [the original text of this post was deleted]
  24. (also posted to the "other" forum) guarddog-2.4.0-2mdk (from urpmi) NOT SAME AS guarddog-2.4.0-2mdk.i586.rpm(from Simon's website) Darn it, )(%#&%%*& I thought this was fixed, but i did a reinstall of cooker 2006 and took guarddog off easyurpmi and just discovered the 2 links were missing. Always - get it from Simon's site or set up for Simon's urpmi. At the least, check that you have the 2 links: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup.d/10Guarddog /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdown.d/10Guarddog else run in root(Rolf's code) if [ ! -e /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup.d/10Guarddog ]; then /bin/ln -s /etc/rc.firewall /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup.d/10Guarddog fi if [ ! -e /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdown.d/10Guarddog ]; then /bin/ln -s /etc/rc.firewall /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdown.d/10Guarddog fi OR run in root ln -s /etc/rc.firewall /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup.d/10Guarddog ln -s /etc/rc.firewall /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdown.d/10Guarddog credit goes to Rolf I have commented Bugzilla 14665 ARG!!! Kristi 05May05 2006 cooker current [moved from Security by spinynorman]
  25. God I thought this topic was dead and gone! I've been using guarddog and MMC stardard security (MDV 2006 cooker current) I can fairly easily see what's being bounced by looking at /var/log/kernel/error (I have guarddog dump the stuff in error - less trash than in warning) Yeah, I always use GRC and ignore all the ads. I did like it when I had DSL cause the westel 2200 modem had a nice little firewall in it that was easily adjustable - that was back in the days when I was using Tiny Pers FW which changed to Kerio about the time I was really realizing I really wanted to get the hell away from windows and netbios and ntp and all that fine stuffs. I suppose I could get a router to put in series with my Comcast surfboard 5120. The "random pings" have died down a lot since I went to Linux. but occasionally I notice a rash from everything else on the Comcast node - newbies testing everything local looking for a sucker! The "distant" netbios pings dies out very quickly when I'm off windows. Anyway, Guarddog has been good to me (I also think firestarter is fine), but Azureus just went to v3 and in doing so I think they changed their "desires" from tcp 6881 to tcp&UDP 6881-6889 I run Azureus when I can - upload the i586 2005LE DVD and I'm still getting a lot of demand for it (40 after 5 minutes), so either more folks are trying MDV (yay!) or more folks are shifting to DVD format - either way, I've found the DVD format a huge blessing when installing and when updating - just one platter to feed to my machine and that's it! But I will pursue with Azureus and Simon (guarddog author)about Azureus' v3 changes on port needs. BUT - what I wanted to ask Adam was if he knew of anything better than GRC? Peas. Kristi
