  1. Steve, you're tops!!! I had read your first post and went seaqrching through the clock controlls and then doing find on "clock" etc and then I noticed your second post!!! a) where did you find it? B) any way to make it the weekday abbreviation? and, duh, yeah, I'm using KDE - like I assume *everyone* is!!! THANKS!!! Kristi and I just answered my 2 questions - you deviously looked at "help"!!!!! and SHORTWEEKDAY is what they say - I'll go try it NEAT!!!!!!!
  2. EDIT - this was my procedural booboo - see down near end of posts on this thread. This ends well!... I bittorrented down 10.2rc1 checked the mdsums while burning the 3 isos with K3b. All went easily. Full install went easily (I have it format / and /boot ). It seem to have no prob with my /home partition. I installed the kernel-2.6.11-1mdk source from cd3 via system/config/packaging/install software. Tried to install Nvidia 7167 per Adam (thanks!!!) but got my nemesis - the "nvidia.ko" is missing. Checked the kern number with uname -a, looked at it in /lib/modules/ checked the source in /usr/src checked the presence ot .options , checked the link, though not by clicking on it which I did the second time around. I assume I have made a mistake. I use remove software to remove the source. I go to mandrakeusers easyurpmi and set mine up for cooker and run the commands. Now I go look at "browse all available" and see the kernel-2.6.11-1mdk that I had installed before, and a kernel-2.6.11-2mdk which I know I can't use cause it won't match my kern. So I tell it to install kernel-2.6.11-1mdk again and watch my cd to see that, yes, in fact it is getting it off the cd again. I check everything very carefully, several times. Then I try to install 7167 and of course (Murphy is very clear about these things) it installs flawlessly. I do not know the answer other than that I must have made some stupid mistake in there somewhere, but thought I'd run it by you guys and see if you see something. But 10.2rc1 is up and purring! And VERY happy they put 2.6.11 in there!!!!!!!!! Kristi [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  3. Thanks!!! Does this mean that there's a MDK10.3b? a? available? Ah, I also notice 2rc1's up. Ah, it's listed on wiki. (duh!) EDIT: there's a 10.2rc1 available with the 2.6.11-1mdk kern Use cooker for urpmi. tia Kristi
  4. Nope... You are doing much more with your machine than I am. About all i do is web, email, ng's, TV, DVDs, movies, and a smattering of other things. It is literally just an entertainment toy. Kristi
  5. Thanks Chris - I already use plain clock and just holding the mouse pointer over the clock shows the day of the week - I am looking for a way that shows it constantly with the clock... Kristi
  6. I'm sure there must be an easy way to do this. Line "Mon" Did searches on +week +day and weekday with no joy. tia Kristi
  7. Glad you have an understanding of the answer. I agree, It's not good... I did, too, wonder why MDK wasn't at Boston. RedHat sure had a big presence. But then I wasn't terribly impressed by anything there, though it might have been different if I were still working. Besides, no sample blades were being given out... Kristi
  8. Continuing thoughts - I see a lot of "hp ps2 mouse" in there go try a couple of brandy new el cheepo PS2 mice. Don't mix old mice with new ones - keep track of the new ones. Are you copying the partition to these new machines, or doing a new install on each one. Should be doing a new install on each machine. I am guessing these are "old" machines that used to be windows boxes.? Having owned a Compaq at one point and later finding it was compatible with about nothing other than what was in the box, you might want to throw a quick windows gen on the troublesome boxes. But the basic point, I know of nothing that would allow a mouse to work in 10.0 and not work in 10.1, though LOTS of things changed in the kernel and therefore drivers.. Googling I see a bunch of stuff with mouse probs and 2.6.9 kernel 10.2 is about out and I've been running 10.2b3mm for a bit now.... Just a thought. Just trying to help, but that's it from this person. Sorry. KRisti
  9. Damn - must be bad karma... :P I do not have an answer and probably won't have an answer, but I'm heading out and will be back in a few hours and will look at it then. Wondering what's in modprobe.preload and modprobe.conf before and after. You're doing some great sleuthing!!!!! Also what's in inittab before and after. Damn!!! Wish some of the pros would jump in here!!! later. Kristi
  10. I wish I could see the mouse part of each machines xorg.conf, while its failing. hth Kristi EDIT: actually, knowing the chipset of each machine would also help a lot, I suspect.
  11. tbird 1 has the option in edit/preferences/general I leave both mail and news unchecked. If ff1 has it in the preferences, I don't know whaere it is. I did not see it in about:config I would suggest you go to mozmagazine and do a few searches, and then just ask. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.ph...4154a1540796bcd If you post, be clear you are using Linux. Lots of folks on there, are. Hope that helps. Kristi
  12. Try tvtime I've used that for quite a while - never could get kdetv to work, possibly cause I use composite2, not the tuner in the card (ASUS TV880 CX2x880xx_) Hope that helps. Kristi
  13. lol, I was just looking through winehq for an answer, and came back here and found your reply! Thanks. It comes in, or rather is interpreted 3 hours off - 1am is thought to be 4am I know I can fudge it by pretending the tz is 3 west of where I am. I am US EST (GMT-5) I get the correct readings for here and now if I tell it I am GMT-8 I'll accept that as "good enough"! Thanks!!! Kristi
  14. Running cooker 10.2b3mm though I believe I experienced the same prob with 10.1. used system, config, packaging, browse avail software. Search wine and installed them all - about 8 or so. (rpmi is set to cooker) Astrolog 5.40 a free astrology program: Set up astrolog.sh to cd to my old winblows software directory and "wine astrolog.exe" Comes up very nicely! Damn is that nice! Damn I like MDK!!! Fonts are italic, so I do some search on the forum and copy my win98 fonts to the appropriate place. Restart it and fonts are perfect. Damn I'm liking this!!!!! Now, in windows, for the program to get the correct GMT offset, I have to put "set TZ=EST5EDT" in autoexec.bat So I tried creating with the appropriate line, but it seems to have no affect on the program. Thoughts? tia!!!!!!!!! (newbie to wine and this is only proggy I have tried) Kristi Moved from Software to Emulation - Artificial Intelligence
  15. Yep - the MDK betas are great! If I hadn't screwed up on not realizing that the "proceed to step 2" thing is a button that had to be pressed (EasyURPMI), it would have been very sweet indeed - as it was, it wasn't that bad and a bit of a learning curve for this MDK newbie. NO, NO, NOT THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kristi
  16. I read this post because I had recently posted a newbie article http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=23333 about a second kernel and Nvidia 6629. I liked Delroy's web corner sufficiently to print the "basics" and the "Nvidia" articles. Nice!!! Thanks! Kristi
  17. (very slow uptake:) How can it be exactly like that - mine is PS2 and yours is supposed to be USB? Yeah, I keep looking at that one, but it isn't sloped quite as much as my old BD-53, which I know is going to die one of these days - much more comfortable than a "flat" mouse!Kristi
  18. That would probably require that you have a driver specifically for that USB device (for Linux). Stick with PS2... Kristi
  19. Yeah, figures! fat!!! Though I notice "scrape error" in the tracker column when I "stop all". Sometime tomorrow I'll try a reiserfs partition. I did see a note that Azureus used only 6881, but I find that 6969 is necessary (tracker), and it performs way better if you open 6881-6889 as you had suggested. (been playing with Guarddog firewall) THANKS!!! I like the icons better here than in the "club"!!! Kristi
  20. I've only been around MDK for about a month. Running 10.2b3 at the moment. Been hearing a lot of bitching about bittorrent, so finally got around to installing java (about 30 sec) and installing Azureus (several seconds more) Cranked it up and it seemed to be dragging a bit, so on advice, opened up 6881-6889, and it maxed my connection 400KB/s in, 40KB/s out. This means I could grab the latest beta in an hour and a half. Very cool! While this seems like it might be a security hole, I am not sure if it is, or just how concerned I should be. First, I have no intention of not using Azureus to grab something. I use Firestarter. I run no servers from this system - it is simply a home desktop computer connected by Comcast cable to the internet. If i check ICMP and pong, then GRC gives me a stealth/passed. If I open 6881-6889 to "anyone", GRC [scan 6880-6899] shows 6881 as open and 6882-6889 as closed. - Not sure why. I suppose the logical question is how can I open 6881-6889 ONLY to bittorrent. Is there a way I could keep Azureus running and not be vulnerable. Thanks!!! Kristi
  21. Right you are oh bright-browed messenger!!!!!!! I am using FireStarter and I had opened up a tad to one site, but now opened 6881-6889 and it's honking full in both directions - a projected 1hr and 20min to d/l the 2GB torrent. - which I have no use for, so I guess I'll let it complete and keep the upload open for other folks. Too bad I can't upload faster! (just called Comcast today and it's 384Kbits/s) Thanks for the note on the scraper error - if I get it again, I'll go looking. I am storing the initial file and the bittorrent stuff all on a /mnt/win-e partition - just a garbage fat32 partition that I use for movies and such. Think it would be faster/better using reiserfs for that??? Thanks again!!! Now I'm off to read that guide!! Kristi
  22. re Azureus - oh. duh. it's a pointer to a pointer. Okay. When I first tried it I only got something about "scraper" error and wondered if that just meant nothing was available. I do have it running doing 10.2b3, but it seems incredibally slow and am wondering if there is anything in the way of hints/tricks to getting the most out of it (I have 4Mb in and 384Kb out) at the moment I'm tearing along at about 20Kb in and 20Kb out thoughts? tia!!! Kristi
  23. Somewhere you commented on Azureus, and I can't find it, but I finally got around to installing it, after installing java and it comes up nicely, but how to I tell it about a link such as the one on that club page? tia!!! You realize of course that I'm a stonehead as far as old english goes - even tried to learn Gaelic once, but alas, but love Arturian cycle stuff and mabinogian, etc, but very unlearned. Kristi
