  1. Whenever I try to get the cds to boot (3 or 4 completely different set of cds have the same problem), all goes well until after the initial welcome screen (choose F1 or F3 screen), then I get an error before I even get to the first actual install screen. I just get intp a loop for looking for a driver for the device, which doesn't work This device is a Toshiba XM-1902B , from the boot log I get: hdc: ATAPI 24X CD-ROM drive, 128kB Cache, DMA Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12 9.1 disks start up and go right into the install procedure after hitting enter from the welcom screen. How can I get the boot procedure to see and access the cd drive? WHich driver should I select from the choices or is there some boot parameter I can issue to get around the problem? How do I get this problem noticed by Madrake Developers at HQ? Thanks, Robert
  2. I deleted the ifconfig-eth0 file - looked pretty clean anyway- but that did nothing. No ethernet section in harddrake. I looked at the boot logs, and I can not figure out why this maching thinks my pc card is a memory card. I dont get it. When I read the boot up screen, there is a line that says something like 'cardmgr [976]unable to start xxx slot 1 resources temporarily unavailable.' Any ideas?
  3. Yeah, I had that idea too, however NONE of the 9.2 disks I have ever tried (at least 3 sets) will boot up on my machine. I keep getting an error that it cannot find a driver even though the disk spins up long enough for the welcome screen (F1, F3 options) but then hangs after starting, though it does find USB devices. I mean its not an LG drive or anything! A toshiba XM-1902B, and no such specific driver exists in the driver list. I looked at the logs after I booted and got a line that says 'error in "config" line 1130:syntax error'. So I open up /etc/pcmcia.conf and rem out the lines for the DWL-650 (starting at line 1130) and re-boot, but still the same problem. IT makes sense that those were the offending lines since I was trying to get my wireless card to work immediately before the problem. Any other ideas? I looked at /etc/modules.conf, but no lines existed associating eth0 with memory_cs. Should I try an alias eth0 xirc2ps_cs? Robert
  4. Well, I was messing around trying to get the D-Link DWL-650 to work with the realtek drivers to no avail, and now my Xircom Modem/LAN card is not even recognized by harddrake - no ethernet section at all (MCC, system, hardware). When I re-boot card manager is looking for memory_cs module?? Startup goes through its normal process - loopback up, eth0 up, but there's no ethernet running, no xirc2ps_cs module either. I insmod xirc2ps_cs, and it load, then ifup eth0, no errors, but ifconfig only shows loopback. I try MCC, internet and can get to the part where it asks me what driver I want (and I select the correct xircom) but it just keep going around in circles when it gets to the point where it asks if I have another device. I select no, but it goes into the module selection screen again. pcmcia and yenta_socket are running the whole time. How do I get harddrake to get the ethernet part back? thanks, Robert
  5. well I solved the problem by putting the mandrake club (cooker?) ftp in my sources and used the MCC to update everything, and seemed to work great, with the EXCEPTION of the login manager. I chose KDM, but everything in the list to log onto (GNOME, KDE, etc) all pointed to IceWM!!! Somehow I finally got KDE up again. My panel was also a little screwed up (TINY ICONS!!) but I just went to Kcontorl and increased the size 1 pixel and all was golden again. R
  6. Artee, are the spec files correct? I got everything from the bittorrent link, but I am getting a lot of depencency issues doing and rpm -Uvh on the i586 directory, as well as a lot of "xxxx was already added, replacing with..nos such direcotory or file..." see below for a small snippet: -------------- [root@rbtlaptopxirc i586]# rpm -Uv * (pwd = the i586 directory of the whole bt download) error: open of 1f9dd54d6685d7858f07b2cbc282c943 failed: No such file or directory warning: package arts = 30000001:1.1.94-4mdk was already added, replacing with arts <= 30000001:1.1.94-4mdk error: open of 6dbf5e54601d9ef19845bdda2f708ac8 failed: No such file or directory warning: package galaxy-gnome = 1.0.0-2mdk was already added, replacing with galaxy-gnome <= 1.0.0-2mdk error: open of 64190b1da86fe9df75ed5a35c55d4a7a failed: No such file or directory warning: package galaxy-kde = 1.0.0-2mdk was already added, replacing with galaxy-kde <= 1.0.0-2mdk error: open of 6a12632a57b88f04ed9630cca7d61ea6 failed: No such file or directory warning: package galaxy-kde-kwin = 1.0.0-2mdk was already added, replacing with galaxy-kde-kwin <= 1.0.0-2mdk error: open of b19ee88d3530ae1f41d9fd00719a8324 failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeaccessibility = 1:3.2-2mdk was already added, replacing with kdeaccessibility <= 1:3.2-2mdk error: open of d1acb105a6329d516ca25943280a87e3 failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeaddons = 1:3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdeaddons <= 1:3.2-1mdk error: open of 275537ff7914c9ddfaa2217a701ee42f failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeaddons-atlantik = 1:3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdeaddons-atlantik <= 1:3.2-1mdk error: open of 3c96186d6af8778b92bf9ee101d6981c failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeaddons-konqimagegallery = 1:3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdeaddons-konqimagegallery <= 1:3.2-1mdk error: open of 3a314c31c930c1e57c8abaca1236e57c failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeaddons-noatun = 1:3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdeaddons-noatun <= 1:3.2-1mdk error: open of a7eacbb8d0abc6e48e7bc72731d66d54 failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeadmin = 2:3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdeadmin <= 2:3.2-1mdk error: open of 8a672d2c978a7c56832040069d04c98a failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeadmin-kpackage = 2:3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdeadmin-kpackage <= 2:3.2-1mdk error: open of 44fecdc3f29c71f27e0499975cdccc77 failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeadmin-lilo = 2:3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdeadmin-lilo <= 2:3.2-1mdk error: open of c111c3c4d87321f791d48fdc6c598567 failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeadmin-linuz = 2:3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdeadmin-linuz <= 2:3.2-1mdk error: open of 64434e2cf0f974295cfa1e0238196a44 failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeartwork = 3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdeartwork <= 3.2-1mdk error: open of e2b19d6cdcba2b9cc569e9f71699038c failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdeartwork-kde-classic = 3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdeartwork-kde-classic <= 3.2-1mdk error: open of 1eee37cdcd6fe0976ae156e3729fef4e failed: No such file or directory warning: package kdebase = 1:3.2-1mdk was already added, replacing with kdebase <= 1:3.2-1mdk error: open of 49eeb83f751eb4a79ba4f2e6269629e6 failed: No such file or directory.................. ---------------------------------------- I rebooted anyway to see what would happen, and just got back into 3.1 any idea? BITTORRENT

well, I thought that too. The only way I could get it to do anything was to click on a link which launched bittorrent gui and started a download. I would like to know if you can use it to browse downloadable stuff as well, but it doesnt seem to be that kind of thing (not a kazaa work-alike it seems). R
  8. Is there any way to get the MCC Software Update applet to use wget by befault as well?
  9. Have Apt/Synaptic, but not sure which of the already listed sources in the vanilla sources list are correct/appropriate and if anyone has a good set of sources for 9.2 rpms

    SBC Yahoo

Well, I dont know why you couldnt just log in from this URL: http://login.yahoo.com/config/login?.partn.../sbc.yahoo.com/ I have SBC Yahoo and just have to log in every time from the URL above R
  11. well, make sure you run cardctl as root, but I'm not sure it would apply to a USB interface anyway. I think its primarily for PCMCIA stuff. I am having better luck with linuxant.com driver wrappers - I actually got the card to be found by the OS yesterday, just couldn't get an IP from my DSL modem. But, at least a little progress. R
  12. I use a Dell Latitude CPiA PII 366 w/256mb RAM with MDK 9.2. ONly thing I cant get working is a wireless PCMCIA card. One thing that took some tweaking was getting both and external keyboard and mouse AS WELL AS the laptop's touchpad and keyboard working at the same time.
  13. wow, you're lucky! I cant even get anything out of /sbin/cardctl -ident for my D-Link DWL-650 (no +)!! Just plain ole vanilla 802.11b. I had the 650+ and got card info, but I took it back for a refund thinking I wouldn't get it working. D'Oh! Anyone know what chipset is really in the 650? I have some drivers for the ADM8211, but they wont compile without errors. R
  14. I am running MDK 9.2 and just dl'd, extracted, and installed Moz 1.5 in the default installation directory /usr/local/mozilla. I made all the symlinks for java, flash, and mplayer in the /usr/local/mozilla/plugins directory but the only registered plugin that Moz sees is flash. Interesting thing is that as I poked around in /usr/lib and found /mozilla, /mozilla1.3 and /mozilla1.4 there as well. I put the symlinks in each of those directories as well. I know that I am launching Moz1.5 and I have removed my ~/.mozilla and recreated it. Still no dice. I couldnt find anything searching the archives either. Any ideas? Thanks, R
  15. Is it really possible to 'upgrade' to a previous version? maybe if you use MCC to remove kdetex packages, but urpmi doesnt seem to know how to do it by itself.....

    KDE 3.1.4

I used the 3.1.4 texstar on MDK9.1 without problem - he even puts a 'suspend-to-disk' button on the k-menu. Never saw that before. BUT, if you plan to upgrade to 9.2 with urpmi and yoiu have the texstar stuff you will be sorry. Follow the thread below for my experience and solution (reinstall 9.1). If I had known before I started I would have used urpmi to remove kde completely before I began. This turned into a weekend project because of the 3.1.4 kde. After going 9.1 vanilla (leave out gnorpm), the urpmi route worked really well - but the plf and ibiblio sources are really bogged down and it may take a while to get all the packages (I mention in my posts that I had REALLY good throughput from the USC mirrors, but I'm in the SF area, ymmv). good luck, Robert http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=9314
  17. did you ever try GRIP? Works well for me, but its a little slow given my machine. It seems to come with codecs for .ogg .wav and .mp3 without any additionl packages. Not sure about cli though. Ripping and end encoding some Stevie Ray Vaughn with it now. Its in most urpmi sources so it should be pretty easy to install. R
  18. well, finally success. Had to reinstall 9.1 from powerpack cds to get rid of Texstar kde314, then it seemed to go smoothly, with the exception of gnorpm which caused an install error because some .so files couldnt be removed by urpmi, but now I am: [root@laptoplinux robert]# cat /proc/version Linux version 2.4.22-21mdk (qateam@updates.mandrakesoft.com) (gcc version 3.3.1 (Mandrake Linux 9.2 3.3.1-2mdk)) #1 Fri Oct 24 22:43:28 MDT 2003 I never did get any PLF sources for urpmi to work, luckily I only needed the USC sources for all the packages. Thanks for the tips in the thread. :D
  19. well, I seemed to get on OK by changing the sources in the urpmi list - got a great one at the USC site - 160k on dsl for most of it. However, , kde314tex will NOT go away so everything has been updated halfway and cant continue since it cant remove the kde packages. And --force doesnt work on rpm -e either. I think I have all the stuff I need in var/cache/urpmi/rpms, but how can I get rid of tex? For some reason, all the Gnome stuff got updated, now running 2.4, but there's no panel, and my desktop arrangement has all my old KDEtex icons!, and KDE desktop is totally blank. Really weird. Even being half destroyed, I am still able to get mozilla and my ethernet card to work. :D hanks, robert
  20. so what am I doing wrong??? I added the first 2 from the list above, but the one below and the one after it both error out???? >>urpmi.addmedia main ftp://ftp.stealth.net/pub/mirrors/ftp.man...6/Mandrake/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz added medium main examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.plf.cz] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.updates.cz] retrieving description file of "main"... retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "main"... ftp://ftp.stealth.net/pub/mirrors/ftp.man.../base/hdlist.cz ...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with 7 or signal 0 retrieve of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed no hdlist file found for medium "main" examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.main.cz] problem reading synthesis file of medium "main" unable to update medium "main" would like to urpmi the upgrade as soon as possible..... 21. I wrote back asking for a new set. Maybe just lost $5, so no biggie. Is is possible to get a screenshot of the terminals while its trying to load? I'd post some output to confirm, but not sure if that's possible. R
  22. I didnt download them myself, bought cheap ones on-line. When I read the logs, what would indicate a bad cd? And which log (alt + which fn key)? R
  23. I just got the download edition and tried to upgrade my 9.1 install (fresh install just before trying to upgrade) on a Dell CpiA 366 with a Toshiba CDRom. Problem is that the load starts, looks for USB devices, then says its trying to find the CDROM (well it just read the cd to get the initial process started) and then I get a loop I cant get out of - choose a module, try another device (HD, FTP, etc), just have to power off to start over. I looked at the logs, but cant tell where its going wrong. Only thing I see is its looking for hdc, which I dont remember ever using, but fstab shows hdc, so it looks right. My 9.1 disks loaded with no prob. Any ideas? Thanks, Robert
  24. Steve, I got the newest mdk kernel and source and installed both, rebooted into the new kernel. I seem to have installed the 8211 module ok, as I get no errors after the make. root@172 ADM8211]# make gcc -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -I/usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.25mdk/include -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strict-aliasing -Wno-trigraphs -fno-common -pipe -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=i386 -c adm8211.c ld -r adm8211.o ADM_Prv.o -o 8211.o However, I dont seem to be able to get the module found at all now (the Dlink is not in the machine when I do the modprobe.) D-link DWL-650+

Thanks to Steve for all the help in the thread he pasted into his reply. I'm now beginning to think I should have stayed with the 650+! Anyway, when I tried the 650+, I think I got card info using the Prism2 module. Try that one. actually I'm not sure I got the card to identify before or after I loaded the module..... here's my output when I had that card, so it should work for you too. D-Link DWL-650+ H/W Ver.:B3 F/W Ver.:1.9 [root@localhost robert]# /sbin/cardctl ident Socket 0: no product info available Socket 1: product info: "Wireless Network CardBus PC Card", "Global", "", "" manfid: 0x0097, 0x8402 function: 6 (network)
