  1. well, for what its worth, I just did a fresh install of 10.1CE and added the mandrake club club-contrib sources to get KDE 3.3.1, and it does cause problems. I am now getting a freaky X server and my keyboard does not work, but the mouse does. This is on a laptop and neither my external PS2 or builtin keyboard will respond. I'm ok as long as I dont need to type anything. X is consuming about 60% of the machine's resources, which it didnt do while I was running KDE3.2. Guess the lesson is to stay away from 3.3 for now. I think there's a whole lot more to it than that. If you meant to get a gui by typing mysql, that wont work. In the install docs and tutorials I've read, you'll need to creat a user mysql and maybe a group as well, but I think if you try the mysql site or news syndication sites like linuxtoday.com you may find a more detailed way to get mysql to be usable, and you'll need to install a front end as well, unless you want to type everything in the terminal. Good luck, Robert
  3. did you follow the link about turning off the pf 10 (ip V6) in modules.conf? Reboot and no better? Not sure you could tell the diff using a 28.8 dialup though. Time for some DSL? :D
  4. Tried to do the upgrade with MCC, but had BIG dependency issue with kdetrayproxy and didnt want to mess with anything. Basically if I tried to do kdetrayproxy alone, it looks like it wipes out most of the KDE pacakages, though upgrading doesnt seem to have any indication that kdetrayproxy is in the upgrade list. SHould I just use the cooker kde pacakages? Are they reallly kde3.3? IF anyone has tried and succeeded, I'd like to know your steps. Thanks, Robert
  5. Well, its kind of interesting to see what came out of the Missing Files and Not on Mirror lists, just not sure how to interpret the results! For Examlple: Not On Mirror says: glibc-devel-2.3.3-20mdk jre-1.5.0-fcs j2re-1.4.2_05-fcs xorg-x11-6.7.0-2mdk xorg-x11-75dpi-fonts-6.7.0-2mdk Missing Files Says: missing /boot/kernel.h-2.6.8 missing /usr/java/jre1.5.0/lib/charsets.pack missing /usr/java/jre1.5.0/lib/deploy.pack missing /usr/java/jre1.5.0/lib/ext/localedata.pack missing /usr/java/jre1.5.0/lib/javaws.pack missing /usr/java/jre1.5.0/lib/jsse.pack missing /usr/java/jre1.5.0/lib/plugin.pack missing /usr/java/jre1.5.0/lib/rt.pack missing /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/javaws/javaws.pack missing /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/lib/charsets.pack missing /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/lib/ext/localedata.pack missing /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/lib/jsse.pack missing /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/lib/plugin.pack missing /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/lib/rt.pack missing /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/lib/unpack missing /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/encodings.dir missing /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/encodings.dir missing /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/encodings.dir missing /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/encodings.dir Since I am running Xorg from the 10.1CE, is it just a version issue since I have a cooker repository in my sources list? I am pretty sure I have kernel source installed too, so why the missing kernel.h? I am running 2.6.8.1-10mdk. Robert
  6. Post the contents of the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0, and what it is that you are trying to modify someone here can possibly help put the lines you need so you dont have to go into the MCC. Robert
  7. Just did a fresh install of 10.1 CE, got to the config section, found ATI fgrlx entry for X, selected, tested (ok), then finished install and re-booted. On re-boot, system hangs after selecting either the linux or failsafe options, with spewage like: calibrating loop parameters, or something similar and never goes any farther. The ati card is PCI. I tried to rescue, but there seems to no way to go back to the intstallation config section. Any ideas? Robert
  8. did you check that etc/modules.conf has an alias eth0 ndiswrapper? I had gotten my D-Link DWL-650 (realtek 8180L chipset) to work with ndiswrapper while I was troubleshooting driverloader for the new kernel in 10.1. There has never been the possibility of getting this card configured in harddrake for me either. you could try putting something like this at the end of your rc.local file to get it to come up at boot time: rmmod ndiswrapper modprobe ndiswrapper ifup eth0 what does your /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-eth0 file look like? Robert
  9. Yes, I have to agree. Having tried it, the FTP upgrade path will upgrade MOST of the distribution, but it left me without an X server, so no graphical desktop. Much easer to do a fresh install, unless you are expert at troubleshooting the relevant config files and making changes by hand. Robert
  10. I bet when you burned the cd's you just made a data cd, and didn't use the tool to 'make and iso from image' or some other wording. Did that many times. IF I were you, I'd use Partition Magic to make at least 3 extened partitions using your empty space after you run defrag: 1)double size of your ram as type ext3 for swap 2) xx gb for the / (root) partion as type ext3 (remember the size so you can tell which one it is when you install linux. I think you can give it a label in PC, but not sure what that'll look like to the MDK installer 3) xx gm for your /home partition as type ext3. Now boot from the cds, when you get to the partitioning part, you'll see you 3 ext3 partitions that you can set to /, home, and swap and you'll not have to worry about the linux patitioning tool messing with the xp partition. Its worked for me many times. Make sure your bios is set to boot from the cd first. You didnt mention if you set that yet. RObert
  11. actually its much easier if you just urpmi the ndiswrapper rpm, then run it. You need to have the windows XP drivers available (I have a D-Link card which uses the Realtek 8180L chips) and you pretty much get instructions in the console. Just a matter if something like ndiswrapper -i [path to xp .inf file]. Granted it doesnt start at boot, but you can put a line at the end of the rc.local file to bring it up. I did have an issue with getting dhcp to work (cant remember), but the installation itself was about as easy as it gets (for linux). Good resource with install how-to is to google ndiswrapper. Robert
  12. when you go into the Mandrake Control Center, Hardware section, click on hardware button, can you see your lan card in the list?? If you can, run the config tool and just set it up as a lan connection (no, cable, no dsl, just lan). THis is really the best way to do it IF your card is listed. Good luck, Robert By the way, Did you know you can create a text file (like copying the ifup eth0 output from the console) and save it to your /mnt/win_C/windows/Desktop (check the path here, its from memory) so you can copy/paste it here for all to read? That would really help a lot. There's really no need to write it all down on paper. Try opening kedit or kwrite or gedit if you are using Gnome.
  13. hde??? Never seen that. There arent even that many channels on the IDE side of things. I though 4 (a-d) was the max????? robert
  14. OK, so I just upgraded using the ISOs and the "upgrade" option did not work since there was no "X" after the upgrade. Had to re-install using the "install" option instead which produced some interesting things: 1: the install routine saw my external usb cd-rw and allowed me to use it instead of the internal cd-rom drive. This wa significant since the internal is the original from the pII days and is quite a bit slower than the external Iomega 52x24x52 cd-rw using usb 1.0. I was able to cut the "install" time by at least half from the "upgrade" time using the internal cd. That's the first time that has happened. Thanks to Udev??? 2. The default cursor theme is great! Hourglass that spins AND has sand you can see moving. Hey, its _almost_ like winblows! LOL 3. THe Evolution migration is perfect. Since I did nothing to my /home partition, first launch of Evo migrated all my mbox mail, AND, AND (emphasis) let me keep for future migration my old data that it could not move. That must be Not Zed of the evo devel team doing his homework. 4. Since I use a DWL-650 wireless lan card (realtek 8180?) with the driverloader kernel module, I have a coulple of issues with the new kernel and udev to get the card working. Mainly the web interface for loading the WinXP modules get refused. That's the first time this has happened. I'm sure Jonathan at Linuxant will get this straightened out ASAP and I will have a completely (havent tried everything yet) working MDK 10.1 in no time. Not sure what caused the FTP upgrade to bork the Xorg, but in my /etc/X11 directory there is an "!X" entry whose size was something like 26 bytes which I think is the culpret. Anyone else have this? When I tried startx I kept gettting xinit errors which seem to point to the /etc/X11 directory. Good luck with the urpmi --auto select upgrades. Robert
  15. I juust started a thread on my failed(?) ftp upgrade from 10.0 OE (no X), but would like to know where to change the kdmrc to kdmrc.rpmnew. So if I boot into the old or new kernels do I need to edit lilo.conf with VIM to take out the devfs reference? I am really crappy using VIM and might destroy the whole file. No joke. Robert
  16. this is an old dell PII laptop with the NeoMagic MagicMedia 256 AV
  17. So I set up my urpmi sources to point to 10.1CE sites, let it run, all seems to go ok, but kernel 2.6.8 wasnt downloaded and there also seems to be no X installed either. Before I started went to init 3 and urpmi'd from there. Re-boot today and used my old kernel, but only got as far as loggin in in a console, tried startx, and errors out (err2) something about not liking /etc/X11/X, cant remember exactly. Urpmi'd kernel2.6.8 and re-booted and no dice again. Tried urpmi xorg, but says everything already installed. hmmm.... Does xorg use startx? Anyone know what could be the prob? Not sure how to troubleshoot. Robert
  18. Did the bug about booting from the 2nd cd get fixed? Did you try booting from disk 2 and then switching to cd1 when it asks?
  19. OK, so finally got around to re-installing CE, then doing upgrade to OE. All seems to have worked, and even got my eth0 (initially wired xircom pcmcia) card back, which was totally hosed after doing a clean OE install. This time when installing CE, it did format my / and /home partitions to erase the data, but did NOT change sizes. On OE upgrade, only packages were upgraded, so no partition table issues. Dual boot works. My DWL-650 using Driverloader and newest WinXP drivers also works (even automagically on boot!) and I can even SEND (so far) e-mail using Evolution. Previously I could only receive (using sbc yahoo dsl) and could not even get a browser to open the web-based version of my mail account. So, so far, I have had too much success, and am waiting for some disaster to take me back to square one! LOL. Robert
  20. Well, my attempt to do an UPGRADE from CE to OE on my other machine went well - no hitches other than it put the older kernel in my lilo config (I had already upgraded to the 2.6.25(?)mdk kernel, but so what. The newest one works still and so does the dual boot to my win partition. Only took 20 minutes. I can live with that. So, laptop is next. Do the QC guys at Mandrakesoft ever test this kind of stuff?? Seems pretty basic. Maybe thier too L33T for win partitions.....lol Thanks all for the help. Will see if my laptop re-install CE upgrade to OE goes as smoothly and post results. Robert
  21. so, should I just re-install CE using existing partition layout, then upgrade (I did complete re-install last time) to OE without changing any of the partitions? Or has something happend that would prevent me from doing that. If I boot into windows now (can only get into safe-mode) I can get to a prompt to do the fdisk /mbr, then restart and get windows to boot. Where exactly is the piece in OE that causes the problem? R
  22. thanks for the response. I checked the bios on my machine, but there is no hard drive geometry settings. The only info present is boot order, and disk size. This is a Dell bios A15 on a latitude CPiA machine. If you have any other info, like alternate bios access keys (I used f2 to get into the settings), I'd be grateful. Thanks, R
  23. well, what I get is the lilo prompt, choose the win98 option and it goes nowhere (looks like Win98 is booting - splash screen) then hangs, lilo again, then mdk boots. I just checked this by re-adding lilo by doing a rescue from the cd, and trying to re-boot. I dont remember re-sizing win patitions, but I may have since I had a borked Lindows install. All the windows partitions are automounted and are readable.
  24. I re-installed totally, had diskdrake write the partition, now no boot into windows98 possible. What's the fix for this? Cant seem to locate what I'm looking for using the search function. I tried fdisk /mbr, but no dice. Is this a clean re-install issue? Thanks, Robert
  25. When I launch K3b, it never gets to the gui and always hangs with "checking for drives" in the bottom of the window. I have an external usb cdrw that is auto mounted, and I can browse media placed in the tray. Are there any other tools that I can use to burn ISO's? Thanks, R
