    Video Drivers

A followup question, I have MESA packages installed libMesaGL1 libMesaGLU1 libMesaglut3 Mesa libMesaGLU1-devel Mesa-demos xmms-mesa Apparently, they provide same OpenGL functionality as ATI_GLX. Should I uninstall them? And how do I disable DRI in XF86Config-4 ?

    Video Drivers

MDK have ATI drivers for club members. For your kernel (2.4.22-10) use ATI drivers and ATI GL library version 3.2.5-3. (you might need to download and install both enterprise and standard versions) I use those with Radeon M9000, glxgears gives 1200 FPS and tux racer works ... but you need to find a right combination, I ended up using 3.2.8-92 drivers (kernel 2.4.22-26) and GL library version 3.2.5-3. They have 3.7.2 drivers as well (the latest ATI drivers, I think), but I couldn't get 3D aceleration working with them. Also, I can't get the depth less than 24bpp and an external monitor working at all...
  3. Thanks, anon (and special thanks for the message -:)). That seems to be the tool that I was looking for... I'll give it a try over the weekend...
  4. Thanks, guys. The both methods work!
  5. neither do I in English version (3.1.4)... Anna, English please?
  6. The "Run..." entry is missing from the KDE menu (MDK 9.2). Neither it appears after right click on the desktop. Is it just me/my system? How can I get it back? Thanks.
  7. Hey, it can't be that nobody knows the answer. Any help, please?
  8. This might be a question that has been answered zillion of times as everybody who owns a laptop does this sooner or later.... I would like to be able to connect an external monitor to the laptop and, if necessary, to switch between the LCD and CRT. I am not after a xinerama or dual monitor, simply I would like to use a CRT instead of the LCD screen. The way I did it: 1. connected the monitor; 2. turned the laptop on and boot init 3; 3. pressed Fn+F7 (I think) to switch to the CRT - works in init 3 (text console); 4. started XFdrake. chose the monotor, resolution, etc. 5. test - this is a fun part: XFdrake always probes the LCD, no matter what monitor and resolution I choose; 6. saved XF86Config-4. Now, when I start X, the monitor goes dead, and KDE stratrts on the LCD. I don't get this - XF86Config-4 contains all parameters of the monitor, but they are ignored. There must be a way to tell the Xserver which monitor to use (or both). Can somebody explain me how can i do this? Thanks.
  9. I wonder if anybody knows a commandline tool for switching network profiles. Most of the time, I access my laptop via network, without even logging in from the console. I however have to switch network profiles to choose between work and home. At present, to switch network profiles, I log in KDE, start MCC, then switch profiles. I believe, there must be a simple command line way of doing this without logging in the GUI - apparently, MCC runs some scripts behind the scenes anyway. Does anybody know a simple answer? Thanks.
  10. Nevermind, I was able to d/load those rpms again... However, why doesn't drakeX work anymore is a big question... The screen goes garbled, and the system freezes....
  11. Well, maybe not a whole system... I've been tweaking with different versions of the kernel and different versions of ATI drivers to make sure that both 3D and atm work on my laptop... Every time I needed to reinstall a package, I had to download it again... Now I have a sort of working system, but can't configure X anymore... I wish to be able to configure an external monitor, also the keyboard is very slow, don't know how could this be fixed... Anyway, how can I d/load an installed package from the club mirror? I've installed the ATI 3.2.8-3 rpms, and wish to have them as a backup. For some reason, every time I try to download them, I get a prompt to login, though I logged in before. I log in again, and everything starts over...
  12. I have downloaded and installed quite a few updates using rpmdrake but I couldn't find any of the rpms in my system. Is it possible to tell rpmdarke that all downladed rpms must be saved? I'd like to keep them, in case I will have to reinstall my system.
  13. I wish to use two different "close/open lid" policies: 1. When the laptop is powered from the battery, closing lid should suspend the laptop (it does); 2. When plugged in, closing lid should put the laptop in standby - I want to be able to access the harddrive, and work via ssh. So far, closing the lid suspends the laptop, no matter what power source it's using. How can I do this? I use apm. klaptop's suspend and standby buttons seem to work with apm on my laptop.
  14. I've done exactly what DragonMage suggested... /proc/acpi/battery directory exists, but the battery state shows an error. I plugged the power adaptor back but the battery state did not change at all, still shows the error.... very frustrating...
  15. Okay, enabling kernel options "acpi=on noapic nolapic" and running acpi and acpid services on boot and stopping apm allows me to turn off the laptop (I have to exit X for this to work...). But now klaptop can't read the battery status! After I unplugged the power cord, I am getting this: # more /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state present: yes ERROR: Unable to read battery status Plugged the power cord back, no change.... Does anybody know, what's going on? Any help please....
  16. The enterprise kernel was chosen by the MDK installer - I have 1Gig of RAM, and someone suggested that in that case the installer picks this kernel as default... As for my question, I was expecting that after upgrade, I would have an option to boot into the old *enterprise* kernel as well, and this option has been re-written, so I have now two entries for the new enterprise kernel and one entry for the standard old kernel (the one you pointed out)... Meantime, I went for it as is... just ran lilo -v, and shutdown now works with "acpi=on no apic nolapic". Well, it sort of works - no suspend/resume, and no battery meter but poweroff now works after I exit X...
  17. Is a precompiled stock 2.6 kernel available for MDK 9.2? I know that Mandrake ships a pre-release candidate for 2.6, but.... They rushed into new things so often in the past, I'm kinda careful to "play" with any pre-release stuff...
  18. I knew I was gonna have trouble with this... Exactly, I am having trouble with shutting down my new ThinkPad T41. Halt brings all services down, then the line "Power Down" appears but the laptop remains on... Someone suggested that this is acpi vs apm question... well I was trying apm with "noapic nolapic, acpi=off". Then I was trying acpi=on, without apm - nothing helps. Is it really that bad? Debian geeks from Tuxmobil.org aren't very clear on this: "patch here, compile there, might work in the future"... I might do that sometime when I have free time on my hands, but right now it's not an option for me... Any help please?...
  19. I know, this was covered many times.... just want to check if I got it right.... Ok, I got rpmdrake to install the latest enterprise kernel (2.4.22-26mdkenterprise), and now my /boot looks as -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 512 Feb 4 2004 boot.0300 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Feb 4 07:49 config -> config-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 52049 Sep 18 20:43 config-2.4.22-10mdk -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 51651 Sep 18 20:00 config-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 51819 Jan 8 02:20 config-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5032 Sep 19 00:46 diag1.img -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 16796 Sep 19 00:46 diag2.img drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 4 2004 grub/ -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 311158 Feb 4 2004 initrd-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise.img -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 308053 Feb 4 2004 initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 95299 Feb 4 07:54 initrd-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise.img lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Feb 4 07:54 initrd-enterprise.img -> initrd-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise.img lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Feb 4 2004 initrd.img -> initrd-2.4.22-10mdk.img lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 Feb 4 07:50 kernel.h -> /boot/kernel.h-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 537 Feb 4 05:40 kernel.h-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise -rw------- 1 root root 267776 Feb 4 07:54 map lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Feb 4 2004 message -> message-graphic -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 164755 Feb 4 2004 message-graphic -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 132 Feb 4 2004 message-text lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Feb 4 05:39 System.map -> System.map-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 625045 Sep 18 20:43 System.map-2.4.22-10mdk -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 621280 Sep 18 20:00 System.map-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 613565 Jan 8 02:20 System.map-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 256 Feb 4 2004 us.klt lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Feb 4 2004 vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1343803 Sep 18 20:43 vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1375674 Sep 18 20:00 vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1354625 Jan 8 02:20 vmlinuz-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Feb 4 07:54 vmlinuz-enterprise -> vmlinuz-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise I am worried that (1) System.map is still linked to System.map-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise, and not to System.map-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise; (2) kernel.h is linked to /boot/kernel.h-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise, and there is no equivalent file for kernel 2.4.22-26; (3) config -> config-2.4.22-10mdkenterprise, not config-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise; Also, in lilo.conf I now have two entries for 2.4.22-26mdkenterprise, and no entry for 2.4.22-10mdkenterprise boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map vga=normal default="linux-enterpris" keytable=/boot/us.klt prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw image=/boot/vmlinuz-enterprise label="linux-enterpris" root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd-enterprise.img append="nolapic devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=off splash=silent" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="noapic devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=ht splash=silent" vga=788 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux-nonfb" root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="noapic devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=ht" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label="failsafe" root=/dev/hda5 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe noapic devfs=nomount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=ht" read-only other=/dev/hda1 label="windows" table=/dev/hda image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise label=2422-26ent root=/dev/hda5 read-only optional vga=normal append=" nolapic devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=off splash=silent" initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise.img I'm saying that cause both the first and the last entries point to initrd-2.4.22-26mdkenterprise.img... Do I leave it as as, or should I do any editing? your advise is desperately needed....
  20. ... in that case, I can cheat and use the built-in Intel miniPCI card, right?
  21. My new Thinkpad T41 came with an Intel wireless and with a D-link DWL-AB650 wireless cardbus adapter: I ordered a supported Cisco miniPCI adapter, but have gotten Intel + D-link card.... I would certainly try to get IBM to replace it but it seems that they do not ship Cisco miniPCI with this particular laptop configuration... don't know why, but that's what the docs say... Anyway, my question is whether there is a support for D-link DWL-AB650. Linux-wlan.org say the card is based on Atheros chipset, MADWIFI project is not very clear on this one either - they support Atheros cards based on AR52xx chipset, but according to Atheros this card is based on AR5001x.... Does anybody have it working? I would certainly try myself but I don't have a wireless router yet....
  22. If I understand you right, you want to do an incremental backup and dump it to the CDs. 1. Incremental backup using tar is easy. You can setup a script for that: http://howtos.linux.com/guides/solrhe/Secu...p29sec306.shtml You can even put it in cron, so that backup is done at a convenient for you time (say, when you're away from the computer). 2. Note that tarballs get big pretty quickly. So, if you wish to move backup files to CDs you have to split them into large chunks using split. To join the archive files together, copy chunks form the CDs to a directory on the HD and use cat to assemble them into one tarball. tar -xz tarboll.tgz file.ext extracts the file named file.ext from the archive.
  23. Thanks for the tip... I was in the Dick Smith Powerhouse a couple days ago, they only had a few iPAQs, Palms and Sony Clio...
  24. Since, you're using 1.2.2.... This version is not the latest in the 1.2.x series... Try to upgrade from the Ximian website via the redcarpet. For me, upgrading to 1.2.4 fixed a couple of hickups....
  25. Thanks guys. To summarize, it looks that Palm would require minimum (no?) tweakiing and is the way to go... I'd consider Zaurus, but I've never seen it being sold in the `lucky country'. Iphitus, have you?
