  1. Don't you can just press "alt+F2" in kde to get a single command-line-rule? Pressing a command like xterm will bring up a terminal. If you xterm installed. Don,'t know how the kde-terminal is called ... anyway good you got it working again. I even think that if you run update-menus as a normal user (your own normal user account ...) you don't have to logout and login again...
  2. I am not sure if you need gimp-print support for this; but I suppose not ... I'm using gimp 1.2. When I click on "print ...", I get the print-dialog. In it there is a button "configure printer (or something ..I translated it: above media-size)". There you have a dialog where you can type the command to use for printing ..I suppose. Check the commandline-syntax for kprinter ...and chaneg the command to the krpinter-command. On the right of it you have a buuton "new printer" ..so you can make a custom printer for this if you want. Can't guarantee it will work, but maybe it does ...
  3. it says device or resource busy ..I thiunk when trying to modprobe a module ...not sure. Can it be that supermount is getting in the way? How do you disable supermount? I searched in /etc/modules.conf, but it is almost empty ..nothing to find there.
  4. I suggest storing your private key on a floppy or so ..not on your harddisk. This way you have a physical separation .... You first need yoru private key tpo decrypt/encrypt .... Maybe you knew this already. It makes it more difficult to break I suppose ...
  5. The basis for all tghe encryption is called gnupg (gpg). http://www.gnupg.org/ On the the gnupg-site you can find links to front-ends, ..just look in their menu under "Related software". Yes, there are front-ends. You can encrypt, ...sign mail with mozilla, kmail, ... (mozill I am sure of ..sinc eI saw it ..anyway in thunderbird :)). But I suppose there are plugins for most mail-programs. There are plugins for chat-programs. I know gaim has an encryption plugin. It's mentionnedon the gaim-page. You can also use encrypted filesystems under linux. If you want I can find an article I found earlier. It seems there are different ways to set it up. Under Mandrake it's an option in harddrake-wizard. For centralising ...kde know has something called "kwallet" which is a central point for teh encryption ..but don't know how strong ... but there is another program for kde which exists longer than kwallet and does ( ~ / more ): PwManager (http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=10277&PHPSESSID=5d1f44671f40fae5fa3893731d01e291). The newest version of it has an emultion-layer for kwallet. You'll have to compare them yourself. There are also front-ends for gnome ..you can find them in the "related software" mentionned above. There even seems to be a windows-front-end. Didn't know that. A good read is the handbook on the gnupg-page ... the longer one is iinteresting (if you are more interested in the details), else (for you I suppose) there is the mini-howto: it also tells some things about the front-ends. http://www.gnupg.org/(en)/documentation/howtos.html Also about some not mentionned in related software I think, but I can be wrong (about using it in the mail-programs, ... ). You can also link to gnupg in your own programs ... Hopes this helps
  6. people with 9.1 have gotten it to work if I remember correct...

    CVS

Will this help you start? http://www.linux.ie/articles/tutorials/cvs.php
  9. anyone know is the following kernel is good ..is it an official kernel? or is there a site about this kernel? kernel2.4-marcelo-2.4.22-1mdk.i586.rpm tx
  10. any SUGGESTIONS/SOLUTIONS( :) ) are welcome ....
  11. Heya, this post is related to my asus-usb-modem-post. I read that there are a lot of problems getting it to work with mandrake 9.2 with the default 2.4.22-kernel. It seems to work with mandrake 9.1, but I don't want to downgrade ... and download and burn another 3 iso's .... Now, I would like to upgrade the kernel and see if it helps (hopefully!!!), but I am not connected to an rpm-repository .....have no internet. So, just to be sure. When I download a new kernel from a download site and install it. Will it give me extra dependencies (I won't download a 2.6.x kernel. It will be a 2.4.x) ? Anyone experience with this ? Thanks.
  12. I believe you can also do url-filtering with dansguardian ...maybe that will help you.
  13. If you're interested, I think VB-pro is now (or going) to be available for linux. You have to check though.
  14. you need squidguard for that as far as I iknow( don't know muc about networking :)). For content-based-filtering .. you'll need for example dansguardian if you would want that.
  15. Heya, I'm trying to install the asus-usb-modem under linux(this software is for all AM 6000UG-usb-modems). I found the necessary software and uit seems people succeeded in running it (not only the developpers ....). Evrything installs fine, but I have problems with getting it running. I asked on their forums and am waiting for a response, but there is oen thing I find strange... The connection is ppp over atm. I installed ppp and pppoatm. But when I enter pppd ....it gives a segmentation fault ..is there somethuing wrong with the default 9.2-package or can there be something else causing this? Can someone advise me a ppp-package he is running that doesn't crash ? Maybe also pppoatm, just to be sure that works. I also didn't found a "/usb/bin/pppoa3"-file after installing it on the system. It's for my friends computer. I know I have one. I tried to look around, but maybe someone can tell me in which package it is? I don't know id I need it ..I have the shared library for pppoatm. Oh yes ...if someone is interested .. when doing the first step ..that is loading some module, it says device or resource busy... If I remember ok, afterwards it says bulk_write: cannot write to endpoint 5 (something like that) .... and it gives up after four times. Thanks.
  16. I downloaded bootitng earlier, but I was too tired to try it ..tx all I'll try it today ....I'll report back how it goes.
  17. Heya, I just read the following article: http://linuxsecurity.com/articles/document...ticle-8953.html and it shows that linux lossed a lot of packets while capturing (more thancompared to other os). Does it mean linux also isn't so good at the moment for capturing as the other os? It mentions that the 2.6 kernel has improvements for this, but it doesn't it bring it so close to the os. The author proposes (and implemented(under gpl)) some patches that makes linux outperform the other os(quite some on certain things even it seems). More even, it seems that the patches make linux capable of capturing (almost) allt he data. You have to look yourself at the data for seeing the package sizes and the performance comparisosn between the os. Now ... :). Is there a difference between "normal" network activities like tarnsfering files, ... and capturing, because I thought linux was/is good at networking(?), but maybe at the moment not so well for capturing?

    kerberos

Can this help? Can the followinf link help?: http://hotham.net/professional/linux/ad_samba3 I got it from my post in this topic (there you can find more links). You may find more info in these posts: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?sho...=10739&hl=samba
  20. Can you describe it a little bit more ixthusdan. How is it called, where can I find it? Thanks already for this hopefull sign :).
  21. I don't have partition magic and don't plan to buy it. Is it a necessity to install mandrake alongside xp??? Like I said above. I defragged windows xp already 3 times with no succes.
  22. Heya, I'm tryinbg to install mandrake 9.2 alongisde windows xp. But, every time I choose "use free space of windows partition3 it says I have to defrag it first. What I have done so far: defragmentation with xp's defragger in normal and safe mode(with terminal). I also tried "PerfectDisk" defragger. I keep getting the error. Does anyone has any experience with defragging xp good enough so mandrake installer can resize it? Thanks. I would prefer to let it be handled by the installer ..., but I also have a knoppix -cd if youi don't know a way to defrag xp well enough.
  23. I mean with no audio/video ...no audio/video for messenger .... It's the first one where I install linux, I'll see if he needs me. He just wants to use the system as far as I know... I'll let you know when it is going to annoy me ... if that happens :D. Thanks for the advise all. I won't wait for 10.0. I'll use 9.2 though. I suppose a lot of bugs are now out of 9.2. I'll also let you kbnow id I get his modm running for the interested ones :).
  24. ooh yeah, he knows he can't use native audio and video with linux. He also knows he cant use windows games under linux, except for the ones supported by wine ... He isn't a game-freak really, so that isn't really a problem. What I really hope is that teh dmix plugin of alsa works ... I'll also set him up the repsoitories for software, ... He wants to learn linux, but not really CLI-thinsg I think. I'll set his system up and if you want I can report back for the ones interested :) and what I did/forgo to do...maybe this is interesting if people wrote this down ...
  25. he just wants to use the computer. Yes, I pushed and tortured him, till he wanted to use linux. Kidding he !!! :). No, he just saw linux on my computer and I tried a knoppix-cd on his pc and he wats to try it himself. He just wants to test it. He also is the person in house who has to keep the pc working and he doesn"'t want to do that anymore. They have some problems with internet explorer now. It won't start anymore a s anormal user. They are using it as superuser now and one eprson in the house seems to use mozilla since I installed it :). He even wants to delete his accont on windows, but I 'll suppose to wait with that. I thiunk the success of linux for him will depend greatly on being able to use the internet. He uses an asus usb adsl modem. I found a project that provides a driver for it. Since I'm tryign to buidl rpm's, I may even build an rpm for it if I get it working. Ofcourse he wants to use messenger. I first wantedt to install kmess, but I'll probably in install kopete now, since it seems to integrate better...I'll see. He will want to have audio and video capabilitiew with messenger. I may can convicne him using gnomemeeting or konference or so. I'll have to see. Ofcourse games and writing reports are also important. Since he uses hotmail, I may install the httpmail gateway for him if I have time. You noticed probably I'll let him use kde. He saw gnoem with me, but I'll first let him use kde I think and afterwards if he wants to try I'll setup gnome for him. You see, I think he is quite a normal user :).
