  1. solved /etc/modules.preload edited - added line "ndiswrapper"
  2. I have had less and less convenience as I've upgraded my Mandrake/Mandriva system the last few times. With 10.2, I had some fits in getting it setup initially, but once I got it going, it was rock solid. I could put the (external PCMCIA Linksys WPC54) card in at any time, and if I was within range of an open network, presto, it was connected. With 2005LE, I sometimes had to modprobe ndiswrapper, if I had run the computer without the card installed, but again, it would come up after I did so. Then came 2006 (Official), then in frustration I even joined "the club" and *every* time I boot it after having had the computer running without the card, it tells me I do not have a wireless interface setup, use MCC to set one up. Tonight, after playing with it some, I got it running by logging into a terminal as root, then going to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and typing "./ifcfg-wlan0" followed by "modprobe ndiswrapper", and finally "ifup wlan0", or I can also type "drakroam", or just click on the icon for drakroam I have on the desktop and all the networks show, and I can connect to any open network (or an encrypted on that I have the pass phrase for). MCC shows I have "pcmcia-cs-3.2.8-8mdk.i586" installed, which, according to the description should allow hotplugging of the card without the extra effort I have had to put in to get it to work. However, unlike 2005LE, after modprobing ndiswrapper, it tells me that it "cannot contact daemon". The only way I have gotten it to connect is to do as described above, or re-install the wireless interface, which I then have to do again if I run the computer with the wireless card inserted. Please tell me there is an easier way to do this!
  3. Have you tried to install acrobat reader for linux and using it? You say the files print fine under wxp, and acroread is likey what you are using there. I have it set here to open pdf files with acroread, and regardless of where the file is, that's what opens it (except off the web in Firefox, but that is another problem)
  4. What application are you trying to print from? Acroread? Kghostview?
  5. The information given here under easy-urpmi is not correct, at least not for Mandriva. Obviously the powers that be here need to modify the information that "easy-smart" is giving. Modifying the CLI as you stated does set up the channels, now how does one setup multiple mirrors? Isn't that one of the features that it touts as an improvement over urpmi/MCC?
  6. One also can use the MCC software update GUI, and see descriptions of the updates and why the updates were put up. MCC uses those same sources.
  7. The problem seems to be that the tools to set up smart here don't work (see this thread). The easy-urpmi works flawlessly, but trying to set up smart with the tools provided here does not seem to work.
  8. If you also get the same error using the easy-urpmi/smart, then it must be set up wrong here on the web site. I tried in the GUI to set up the same sites, and I *think* I got one set up right, but the others returned errors saying something about it was too much data to set up. Then of course there are the mirrors one can set up, which I haven't played with much. I sit 40 hours in Seoul starting later today (or tomorrow, depending on your point of view), and will play with it some more and post the results I get. I don't really want cooker sources, as my goal is to have an up to date, but stable system, so I unchecked the boxes (I deleted them, but they were back when I opened it again - gotta look at the config file when I get to Seoul). I will use the cooker sites that are set up as a template to see if I can get the other working.
  9. OK, this is probably something simple that I am overlooing (it often is with Linux), but I went to the top of the page here, and clicked on easy-urpmi. I selected smart and went through the steps just as I had with urpmi. I cut and paste the CLI commands (why does it default to *not* including the channel?), and get no errors. The commands I that easy-urpmi/smart gave me and I cut and paster pasted were: smart channel --add main type=urpmi baseurl=ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/2006.0/i586/media/main hdlurl=media_info/hdlist.cz smart channel --add contrib type=urpmi baseurl=ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/2006.0/i586/media/contrib hdlurl=media_info/hdlist.cz smart channel --add jpackage type=urpmi baseurl=ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/2006.0/i586/media/jpackage hdlurl=media_info/hdlist.cz smart channel --add plf-free type=urpmi baseurl=ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandrake/free/2006.0 hdlurl=hdlist.cz smart channel --add plf-nonfree type=urpmi baseurl=ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandrake/non-free/2006.0 hdlurl=hdlist.cz smart channel --add updates type=urpmi baseurl=ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/updates/2006.0/main_updates/ hdlurl=media_info/hdlist.cz When I type smart -shell, it says this: # smart --shell Smart Package Manager 0.30.2 - Shell Mode Loading cache... error: Invalid URL: MD5SUM error: Invalid URL: MD5SUM error: Invalid URL: media_info/MD5SUM error: Invalid URL: media_info/MD5SUM error: Invalid URL: media_info/MD5SUM error: Invalid URL: media_info/MD5SUM Updating cache... ######################################## [100%] smart> I get similar errors if I try to use the gui. I looked at the smart home page, and it says there is no documentation - but are working on it. So, what am I doing wrnog here?
  10. SOLVED! You are correct! I'm curious, did you stumble onto this, or is there documentation somewhere for this change that I missed? I won't use it much, but it's nice it's still there. It's not like I need it as much as I once did - I boot to windows quite seldom anymore - and from the looks of it will do so even less with 2006. I have XP in a minimal partition on both the laptop and the desktop. I seriously considered getting rid of windoze entirely on both machines when I upgraded to 2006, but I decided to keep a copy on both for the following reasons: Laptop 1) If I want to update the BIOS, HP only has windoze based ways to do it (AFAIK). 2) I had occasional problems with encrypted wireless networks under LE and earlier. I haven't had a chance to try it out much, but it looks like the new drakroam will take care of that. (You might say I travel for a living, and will have lots of chance to try it.) 3) When I am in a hotel, and having trouble connecting, the IT folks have no clue how to trouble shoot if I don't have windoze available (even though MDV has as good, or better tools to do so). They sometimes don't have a clue anyway, but having windoze for them to play with makes them unable to just throw up their hands and give up. 4) Until I got cross-over office, and installed IE, I had to boot to windows to do my monthly bidding for my schedule, as doing so requires Active-X controls, and the company refuses to support a browser other than IE. Desktop 1) HP sent a number of windoze utilities with the PSC2175 all-in-one printer that are quite nice and I don't want to lose. 2) I occassionally need to send a FAX, and have not bought the driver from linuxant to make that work (probably will someday, though having to pay for a driver for linux that's free under windoze is annoying!). 3) I am sometimes curious as to how something looks/works under "true" windozes.
  11. I'll give that a shot here in a bit, thanks!
  12. I would like to figure out how to get back one of the little functions that was available in releases before 2006. Now, when I hit the logout button, I have the options of "End Current Session", "Turn Off Computer", Restart Computer", and "Cancel". The "Restart Computer" button has a little inverted triangle that would make it appear that there are more choices available, but there are not. In 2005LE, and previous versions that I have had (back to 9.0), after I chose "End Current Session", if I then chose "Restart", I had options of how it restarted - whether to restart normally, fail-safe, non-fb, or windoze. It now simply restarts in normally. The little inverted triangle is there as previously, but it also does not lead to reboot options. Is the option to choose how the computer restarts now gone, if it's not, what am I missing, and where do I configure it?
  13. If there had been, wouldn't it have been updated using MCC and update?
  14. Solved! It was (sort of) a ndiswrapper problem afterall! I was poking around trying to get the thing to work, and I tried "modprobe ndiswrapper". The card was suddenly there! I then added that line to the file ifcfg-wlan0, and now it works! Edited update. I tried to add it to ifcfg-wlan0, but that file gets overwritten when one connects to a new network. Instead I added a line to /etc/netplug/netplugd.conf instead.
  15. Open konqueror as a filemanager (home icon), click Settings-> Configure Konqueror...-> Behavior, in the selections, you will find that the check box for "Show Delete" box is unchecked. Check it and then you will be able to bypass the trashcan, and delete the files and folders directly.
  16. Both pcmcia and netplugd are running and are set to start at boot. Concerning udev, my question was if there was any other way to update it other than software updates in MCC. Just tried the wireless card again, after having booted up with the hotel wired connection. I shutdown, put the card in and booted. It again told me I do not have a wireles interface, and need to set one up. This doesn't seem to be a problem with ndiswrapper... ndiswrapper -l gives me: Installed ndis drivers: lstinds driver present, hardware present
  17. I have searched the boards, and googled for the answer to my current quest for improvement on my 2006 (Official) laptop install - all updates applied, and I haven't found anything to help. I have a PCMCIA removable wireless card (Linksys WPC54G), installed using ndiswrapper. In 2005LE the card worked well enough (though it gave me fits when it came to encrypted sites – another story). It was always available when I plugged it in even if the computer was already running. Now with 2006, if I have been using the computer without the card plugged in, and then insert the card, whether I first shut down, then insert the card and restart, or just insert while the computer is already running, drakroam gives me this error: “You do not have any wireless interface. Run the “Set up a new network interface (LAN, ISDN, ADSL, ...) assistant from the Mandriva Linux Control Center” When I do run MCC, and (re) configure the wireless, the option “network hotplugging” is checked as active, but grayed out, and sometimes warns that the program has ended abnormally. I do not see “hotplug” or “udev” running under services in MCC either (expert mode), though they are installed. I read a post about updating udev – but if there is a different way than to do it than MCC's “update software”, someone will have to clue me in to how. I know there should be a way to run the computer without the card in, and not have to reconfigure it the next time I run with the card! If someone has a solution, I would appreciate it!
  18. You can always try the --force option with urpmi or rpm. I have been able to install over a copy of skype that wouldn't uninstall that way (didn't help though), and then it would not uninstall either. So where are you getting the older version? I haven't been able to find any for mandy, deb yes, mandy no. There is also the option of using the QT skype non-rpm package. I have not tried it yet as I did get skype workable here - not good, just usable. I have to close it after every call, etc. etc.
  19. My failed install/uninstall was on a HP ze4911us - perhaps it's a problem with the HP hardware?
  20. Just a guess, but was this on an HP laptop? I was just at the skype website, and the current there is 1.2.0.18 - where are you getting the .20 version, a club mirror?
  21. Iaan; I'm curious, are you using a PP release, or the free download? Also, are you installing on a laptop or desktop? Like I've said, it went OK on the desktop, but I seem to have problems akin to yours on the laptop.
  22. Actually I got a four disk version of power pack from here. Won't buy there again, I ended up d/l'ing the free version anyway when it came out. The PP I got had a skype version one out from what's currently available on skype.com. It did exactly the same thing, exiting with a "scriptlet" error, and also won't uninstall. I did sort of half-way get skype to work, but I wouldn't recommend it. I had a working install on the desktop (as good as it ever was - still has occassional errors "problem with sound device", "call failed", other problems with sound card usage). So I scp'd the files over to the laptop. It works, but I have to restart skype, and the sound system on the laptop after every call. I do not understand why the install went fine on the desktop (other than continuing sound card faults), and not on the laptop. They both were installed from the same disks, on similar hardware (IDE drives, AC`97 soundcard). I never had any problem *installing* skype before this, just in using it, and what I understand is that is because it does not natively use ALSA (they say they are woking on it).
  23. aRTee; Thanks for weighing in here. I even went so far as to re-format the drive and re-install - twice - thinking maybe I had missed something. I had tried to put the MM kernel on you mentioned, but apparently it does not support the drag bar on the mouse pad. Anyway, whether I use "rpm -i" or "gurpmi" (by clicking on the rpm icon, or opening with Software Installer during d/l) I get the same "scriplet" error that Iaan mentions. I know (or am pretty sure) I did not have this error the first time I installed it, but that was 2-3 installations ago! What I d/l'ed from the skype website was skype-1.2.0.18-mdr.i586.rpm As far as using urpmi to install skype, I'll have to ask you for a source. When I try it I get: # urpmi skype no package named skype Using easy-urpmi from this site, I set up my sources as follows: urpmi.addmedia main ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distribut...i586/media/main with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distribut...6/media/contrib with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia jpackage ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distribut.../media/jpackage with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia plf-free ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandrake/free/2006.0 with hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia plf-nonfree ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandrake/non-free/2006.0 with hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia --update updates ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distribut...0/main_updates/ with media_info/hdlist.cz
  24. Spent the last two days installing 2006 (download) on my laptop and desktop. The installs went fairly well, and overall I am happy with them both. I *do* have a couple of questions about trivial stuff, but they will be in other posts. This post is only about getting skype working. The problem came when I tried to use skype on the laptop this morning. I understand skype is installed by default with PP, but is not on the DL disks - so I went to skype and d/l'ed the "RPM for Mandriva 10.1 and newer", as well as the "Public Key". The initial installation went fine, no errors. I did not get around to trying to use skype on the laptop until this morning. It took *forever* to load, and then gave me a log-in error message, or just kept coming back to the login screen (various errors). I did the same install on the desktop and it works like a champ. I am connecting to the same router the desktop is on from the laptop but using a wireless card - so it should not be a firewall issue. Anyway, I decided unistall it and reinstall it. I used MCC to uninstall it (no errors - though in retrospect, maybe should have used "rpm -e"), then tried to reinstall it. I got this: # rpm -i skype-1.2.0.18-mdr.i586.rpm package skype-1.2.0.18-mdr is already installed So I tried to unistall it again and got: # rpm -e skype /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.5213: line 1: fg: no job control error: %postun(skype-1.2.0.18-mdr.i586) scriptlet failed, exit status 1 I looked using: # locate skype /home/karl/.kde/share/apps/RecentDocuments/skype-1.2.0.18-mdr.i586.rpm.desktop /home/karl/Download/skype-1.2.0.18-mdr.i586.rpm I use skype a *lot* from the laptop! If anyone can explain how to get rid of the errors, and get me back to calling home from odd corners of the world, I would very much appreciate it! [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  25. I am running 2005LE with all updates available as of 30 minutes ago. I am overall very happy with the system, and though I had a few teething problems might still remain, this is about using my HP PSC2175 all-in-one from Konqueror. The printer works perfectly when printing from everything I've tried (Firefox, Open Office, Kwrite) except Konqueror. The fonts on all other applications are perfectly acceptable, but when printing a web page displayed in Konqueror, the output is so small as to be unreadable. I tried viewing/printing the same page in both Konqueror and Firefox, and from Firefox it printed a page and a half, from Konqueror it printed less than half a page. With this upgrade (from 10.1) I am trying to use Konqueror less as a browser and depending on Firefox to the largest extent. However, I have one web site that I pretty much have to use Konqueror for (work) that only recognizes IE. I can have Konqueror lie to it and not have to use a MS product to do 90% of what I need to do there. If anyone has a good idea how to get Konqueror to print in some other (larger) font, I would appreciate knowing what it is. BTW - I have tried setting up the printer from CUPS, Kprint wizard, and from MCC, it works the same way anyway it was installed. I also will occasionally have a need to print to an HP network printer (Officejet 4050), and though the test page prints out perfectly, I get the same tiny printing characters there as I do with the 2175.
