I have mandriva 10.2 installed on my laptop My problem is the power saving feathure(s) in windows XP I have the ability to disable the network card, Bluetooth, infra, .... I want to do the same with linux but in diferent way I want to pass some boot options that disable most of my devices (which I don't need while I am away) (i.e nousb,nopcmcia,nonetwork,hwdetect=no) The options above for PCLinuxOS http://www.pclinuxonline.com/pclos/html/cheat_codes.html they call it cheat codes and I wonder if mandrake also have cheat codes? and are they the same as PClinuxOS? and if not where can I find list of this cheat codes for mandrake? thanks

Note adding the following line export LC_ALL=ar_EG.UTF-8 cause some applications to be opened with arabic interface .i.e openoffice to avoid that add the following line instead export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8

I could find the solution in arabic forum This solution should work with other languages also like hebrew edit your /etc/fstab add [iocharset=utf8] to the 4th column of any row contains the word vfat i.e. /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat defaults,iocharset=utf8 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat defaults,iocharset=utf8 0 0 /dev/hda6 /mnt/win_e vfat defaults,iocharset=utf8 0 0 install the arabic support (or whatever your language) urpmi locales-ar add the following line to /etc/profile (for kde users) export LC_ALL=ar_EG.UTF-8 add the following line to /etc/profile (for genome users) export CHARSET=ISO_8859-6 export G_BROKEN_FILENAMES=1 reboot thats all

I have found a good solution I deleted PClinuxOS from My HD problem solved :D

PClinuxOS comes in only one CD and it doesn't include Genome But I tried with another GUI called flux or something like that and still the problem exist. I don't think the problem in fstab file I have now 2 computer one with mandrake (support arabic file names) and PClinuxOS I modified the fstab file of PClinuxOS according to the fstab file of Mandrake but still nothing working

Thats the first thing i tried to do when i faced this problem and yes it doesn't work :D utf8 is not only for arabic it is for many languages how do i tell linux that mount my partitions with utf8 support and read it as arabuc letters not latin nor hebrew, etc ... I think it is very hard problem, I'll wait for a while if i couldn't solve it, i think i have to give up and thank every one who tried to help me.

Is my problem that complicated? I don't ask for arabic support for PClinuxOS It support arabic very well except one thing "filenames" Is reading file names in arabic is that big problem?UTF-8 capable bash shell. I can install that UTF-8 capable bash shell if this is the problem but what is its rpm name?

I tried what u said but it didn't work Please note that i have kde 3.3 also note that i can type arabic perfectly in any text editor. I think the problem in the character encoding or something like that

I use mandrake 10.1 it support the arabic file names correctly if (and only if) i selected arabic as my language during setup. Now I want to use another linux distribution called PClinuxOS it is based on mandrake The problem that it has very simple setup with very a few question It doesn't ask me about my language during the setup and therefore i don't get any support for arabic file names. And My question is what kind of configuration should I modify in PClinuxOS to get the same arabic support as mandrake? I though the key is in fstab file I tried to modify it to looks like the one I have in mandrake but still it doesn't work. Please note that I have the problem only in file names, I can type & read arabic in any text Editor [moved from Software by spinynorman]

I bought Acer tavelmate 4050 (almost the same as 4052) I tried to instal mandrake 10.1 on it every thing went perfect every thing correctly detected after installation I started mandrake and it worked fine Then I restarted my labtop again and mandrake doesn't woork any more It always halt while starting pcmcia So I installed mandrake again but this time I've disabled the pcmcia service from starting at boot. again it worked fine at the first time and when i restart it halt while booting. this time it halt on net profile I tried to enter the interactive mode by pressing (I) It ask me if i want to start whatever [Y/N] Then it halt. some times also it halt while it is detecting my hardware what makes me made that linux start fine for the first time after installation But when I restart it halt. Any body can help?

How do i Write an additional parameter in an item of boot-menu? I am having the same problem and I could find a silly solution found in my reply in this forum http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php But I find your solution is much easier. Thanks alot.

Thanks alot fissy for your help Now every thing works fine. For who's having the same problem the solution was by forwarding the 2 ports 5800 and 5900 (for mandrake) and evey thing will work fine. Note: when you want to test your remote connection with your real IP don't test it with some one on your network but test it with some one outside your network fissy if I said something wrong please correct it :) fissy XMan

I never heard before about "port forwarding" But I googled for it and I found this llink http://www.portforward.com/alcatel/st510v4...tforwarding.htm I tried to do this in my Speed touch modem and i attached with this message a screen shot to my SpeedTouch page. Note that my local IP is 10.0.0.2 Note also that i do all of this under linux (don't let the title bar decive you B) ) Now I think I could make IP forwarding correctly but still nothing happen I hope My problem can be solved since I hate windows and I don't want to go back to this dummy OS Thanks a lot for your replies

ok I'm sure that my firewall is disabled and all ports are forwarded and I have VNC. Now what should I do? I go to another linux box and try to connect to my box VNC will ask me for the IP and since the real IP is shared between 5 computers I don't think VNC will figure out which box (of the 5 boxes) I mean. In MSN things was simple. meet some one on-line and invite him to take control over my machine I never asked about my IP , port number, routers, etc .......

In windows XP I could control another computer remotly from my computer through the internet And it was very simple. 1)Open msn 2)click on "ask for remote assistance" link Thats all And Now I'm Mandrake user and looking for similar thing for mandrake I found some thing like that in mandrake called rfbdrake "Virtual Network Connection" It worked properly (and easly) And I could see & control another desktoip running mandrake though LAN connection That's fine but, what I want is to connect to another computer though the Internet not through LAN And also (if possible) connect to windows machine as well as linux machine. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS IT WORKS IT WORKS Thanks GOD ----------------------------------------------------------- I could finally fix my HP printer to work under mandrake 10.1 I did many steps so I don't know which one of those steps fixed my printer So you I will tell you all of them 1-I removed the following packages with rpmdrake cups cups-common cups-drivers foomatic-db 2-I removed the following packages foomatic-db-engine foomatic-filters NOTE:DON'T REMOVE THEM FROM RPMDRAKE To reomve the last 2 packages do the following open consol type su enter your root pasword type rpm -e --nodeps packagename 3- I installed the oolder version of the previous packages (older versions found in mandrake 10 CD1) 4- I restarted my computer 5- Open Start-->System-->Configuration-->Configure your computer 6- from the hardware section open printers 7- remove your ho printer from there 8- shutdown your PC 9- Put your printer in another USB port 10- Turn on your PC and open Start-->System-->Configuration-->Configure your computer again goto printer section It will tell you that he found a new printer called hp click ok make sure that your printer is enabled then print your first test page Enjoy Note:May be you don't need to make all of this steps to get your printer work Maybe changing your USB port is enough If any body has a better solution please post it here

Help I have the same problem I even tried to copy ship100.img to my /etc/printer but still it doesn't work
