  1. Many thanks, people! Please keep them coming...

Silly question re Nvidia driver :-

I printed out the instructions. How do you get to enter all that stuff if you haven't yet got your monitor working .... cos you haven't yet installed the driver? :? Or do you get bare 600x800 to let you do the work? I KNOW I'll regret having asked that.

BTW, cjc, (slightly off topic) I have a connect 3D radeon 7000 which just won't work with Mdk 9.1. I have the Via KT266A chipset. Anyone know how to get it to work?

  2. I'm thinking about buying a TFT monitor but have come across one or two alarming posts from folk whose monitors haven't worked. I'd be grateful if anyone using a TFT monitor could post their recommendation here (and your video card) along with any tips and tricks. I'm running Mdk 9.1 and I've got and old ATI Rage 128 Pro which I'll happily upgrade. (I bought a Radeon card recently but it doesn't work :( )

I'd be really grateful for advice on this one - getting a bit obsessed with the idea of having one of these things :D

  3. This is the result of df -h:

    [root@localhost fin]# df -h

    /dev/hdb5             4.7G  3.1G  1.4G  70% /extra

    /dev/hda8              21G  1.3G   19G   7% /home

    /dev/hda1             7.8G  1.7G  6.1G  22% /mnt/win_c

And yes, I have a problem since I considered using Partition Magic to resize and create partitions, and it doesn't (well, not the version I have) handle reiserfs - the fs I'm using. So, okay, I back up and reinstall Mandrake after resizing my partitions. Then I install SuSe in the new partitions. How do I get lilo to list both of these and Windows? Sorry if I'm being thick here. (maybe a Windows bootloader like BootMagic would do the job, but I feel that would be cheating :-))

  4. I see. I think. So all I have to do is create partitions for suse and mount them on /suse /, suse/home, suse/usr etc.

The problem is with lilo not being able to boot suse. so either use grub or boot SuSe from a floppy or create my suse partitions under mnt/.

Does that seem a fair summary?

  5. Can anyone explain how I add another Linux? I'm dual booting Mandrake 9.1 with Windows but I have a copy of SuSe 8.2 which I'd like to run. I have a 60Gig HDD with 7 Gigs of Windows and all the rest Mandrake and a 6 Gig slave HDD with a small Win partition and the bulk given over to backup of Mandrake. I'd like to repartition hda and give SuSe about 6 Gigs. How to do?

  6. OK, here's the story now. I have just cleared CMOS and rebooted. Still no joy, so I went back into the BIOS and changed to PnP enabled. Still no joy. Mu motherboard is Abit KT7-raid. Yes, I could presumably disconnect various bits and pieces like game port but it does seem to me to be rather over the top. I'm going to try updating ECSP again. Before I do that I'm also going to take the USB connection off my Epson STylus 740 so that it runs under a parallel connection only. That way the system will only have to worry about one USB connection.

CPU Athlon 850, 20 Gb and 6Gb HDDs, 512 Mb SDRAM Dual boot Windows Me.

    Many thanks for your replies

  7. Well, we're back to no scanner again. See thread on Mandrake Club. I've reinstalled SIX times and intermittently had the scanner working. I've fiddled with PnP in the BIOS (which fixed it once) but I'm baffled. Also I have to reset Kmixer every time I log on. The system regularly hangs when left on overnight. This release feels flaky to me. I THOUGHT it came out too quickly after beta testing began. Now I'm sure of it. What's the rush Mandrake?

  8. does your scanner need a firmware upload?

Dunno. Could you explain further? (later) However, I've done the following: reinstalled MD just to make sure all the conf files are in their original state ;-) and I went into the BIOS to see if I could fiddle with interrupts as I suspect my sound card which shares an interrupt with USB may be interfering (I need to reset Kmixer every time I log in in order to get sound) I couldn't change any interrupts but poking around -changing PnP from enabled to disabled and back again among other things- seems to have done the trick even though I set the BIOS back to the way it was !! God knows how long it'll last and I have no idea what I've done, but be assured I'll keep an eye on it.

  9. Many thanks for replying but I think we've been here before, Steve! Note that this is the Scanexpress 1200 UB PLUS. It has the gt6801 chipset and requires kernel 2.4.12 or later and sane-gt68xx. Both of these are part of MD 9.1 and as I say, it worked fine for a few days. [

  10. I installed MD 9.1 and it successfully found and set up my Mustek 1200 UB plus scanner as Mustek BearPaw 1200 CU. Hoorah! It worked fine for a couple of days. Then when I click on the XSane icon I get the error message "Failed to open device 'gt68xx: /dev/usb/scanner0'.

I did a complete reinstall. Now XSane also finds my TV card but returns the same error message for my scanner. Jubilation to despair. What the hell is gt68xx? Can anyone help?

  11. Many thanks copex. I had a look at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ and I see that Tiscali are up among this month's leaders. So since I already use them that's the way I'll probably go. Now, just to show how uninformed I am :-) - at the moment I use kppp to connect. With ADSL would I continue to use kppp and would Tiscali have to provide me with DNS numbers? ( At the moment I don't have to provide kppp with any DNS numbers, though formerly I dd). Or is this all tosh and I have to configure all sorts of stuff?

  12. I suppose this is a UK question. Can anyone recommend an ISP to set up a broadband connection for my Mandrake box? To put it another way, has anyone any experience of Tiscali or Freeserve in this regard? The reason I ask is that my present ISP (Tiscali) says their system works with all flavours of Windows but not with Mac. OTOH they once told me their narrowband system wouldn't work with Linux - as far as they knew. Little did they know! (It even worked with Libertysurf which depended on ads being embedded in IE. I used Linux and Konqueror - no ads :-)

  13. Ever since I installed MD9.0 - which seems eons ago! - I have been getting fairly regular lockups of keyboard and mouse when I switch on the monitor in the morning. (I leave the machine running and am in K desktop but switch off monitor). I've tried the various SysRq key combinations but the only ones that work are Alt-SysRq-e and Alt-SysRq-b which means the OS still has to go through the whole fsck process. Getting a bit sick of it. It doesn't happen all the time but regularly enough to piss me off. Never happened with earlier versions of MD and I haven't upgraded any hardware. Machine is 850Gb AMD with 500 RAM, Rage 128 Pro AGP 4x. Monitor is a cheap iiyama Vision Master 1402.

Is this a hardware problem or is it a bug?

  14. many many thanks for all this , Steve. I'll sit down with the links you've mentioned and get downloading. A quick look tells me one thing: The model I have is the 1200 UB Plus and the Plus makes all the difference. It needs a completely different driver. I haven't the time at the moment but will get to it as soon as pos.

    Thanks again
