An update. I have a ThinkPad running PCLinuxOS 2009.1. I installed the kdms-qc-usb package on that system. The package installed, and then compiled the driver quickcam.ko. I took my Logitech Quickcam, plugged it in, installed Panorama, and viola, it works.

 

That system is running a different kernel, and a slightly older version of GCC. However, it all works. So, now I know there is a problem with Mandriva 2009.1 compiling the driver I need.

 

Is there some place to report this and find some help???

I have had a try at installing qc-usb-messenger-kernel-desktop-latest. If I select that package, I get an unsatisfied dependency of qc-usb-messenger-kernel-2.6.25.3.... I don't have that kernel 2.6.25.3 installed at all. I can not list it through Install/Remove software.

 

There has to be something hosed up in my system, or the files are really not there. Can anyone shed some light on this???

Some history. I have had this webcam working with 2008.1. I did a clean install of 2009.1 several months ago. I am now trying to get the webcam working. Last time it worked, it was a struggle. Here is the thread that describes what was done.

From this thread, and the last posts, it appears I need

qc-usb-kernel-desktop-latest

. This means I can not use the 586 kernel I'm now using. ( I think ).

 

I installed this kernel

kernel-desktop-latest-2.6.29.6

. I can not figure out what nvidia package matches this one, and what I need installed to get the webcam working. I believe I need to 'modprobe mod_quickcam' to support the webcam. I have looked in MCC --> Install software. I find the names in there very confusing.

 

Right now I have cheese installed. I can see the webcam with lsmod, and /dev/video0 is there. I see coloured confettie on cheese.

 

Could someone who understands the naming of the kernel packages please give me some direction?

Well, after spending way too much time on Pulse Audio, I had no success in getting system sounds to work, with other applications running.

 

For now I have given up. I disabled Pulse in MCC. I installed aRts, and voila, system sounds with other audio applications running.

XMMS has a Pulse Audio plugin, and does work with it.

 

I understand people are not thrilled with Pulse Audio, neither am I. However, my interest is to see what can I do with it. Since it is GPL, like other linux software, and several distros are moving toward it, I would like to see if I can get it to work. The problem I have is not a show stopper, by any means. I know I could blow it away, but that would not help to define any problem, or to fix it. So I will continue as far as I can to learn, and help fix...

 

Here is one thing I tripped across, looking to learn...

 

E: modinfo.c: Failed to open module "/lib/module-init-tools": file not found

 

I get this error message when I run the command 'pulseaudio --dump-modules', at the end of the module listings. I went into Install/Remove software, and listed the installed module, 'module-init-tools version 3.6' It is installed. I looked at the files, and sure enough, module-init-tools is installed in the path specified.

 

So, the question is why do I get the error message it can not be found? Possibly this has something to do with problem I have described? Don't know for now.

I'm have problems trying to get system notifications to play a sound fine, ( .wav files ) while I have an audio stream palying, or playing music files.

 

First off, I'm running Mandriva 2009.1 with a stock kernel.

 

I have several system notifications set up to play .wav files, including Thunderbird, for arriving mail. The system notifications work, if I'm not playing a audio stream, or musinc files on my system. Once I start up Xmms, or RealPlayer 11, then I do not hear the notifications.

 

Pulse Audio is enabled in MCC. Other options I have selected are: Automatic Routing from ALSA to Pulse Audio, and Enable user switching for Audio Applications. Other items are not selected.

I have spent a lot of time on www.pulseaudio.org, and at this point have not found a lot of help there. It appears to me as a lot of the setup on Mandriva 2009.1 is different than what they list.

 

I have installed 'padevchooser' 'paman' 'paprefs' 'pavucontrol' and 'pavumeter' to try and help sort out how Pulse Audio works, and hoe to configuer the beast.

 

The problem as I see it, if I have XMMS or RealPlayer running, and I try to play a .wav file, with aplay at a command prompt, XMMS will continue to play, but I get silence from the .wav file. The wav files are fine, if you play them by themselves.

 

This all worked when aRts was the sound server, on older versions of Mandriva. I know I could remove Pulse, and install aRts, but that would be giving up, and if PA is the future, I would lkie to understand it better.

 

Any thoughts on what I coyuld try???

Open Compiz Config Settings manager. Make sure you have 'Window Decorations' checked. Open it, there is a Command field. Enter 'emerald --replace' there. You may have to restart the x-server. Ctrl + Alt + backspace. Log in and see it that allows the theme to load.

where did you get your "tar"patch/or whatever u got XD

 

The tar file is not a patch. It is an installable version of Frostwire.

I have since install all packages that were not installed. Frostwire is working.

 

I believe the major problem was the PATH to the java environment. Frostwire installed from the rpm could not find unpack200. There is also an

issue around permission on the /usr/lib/frostwire directory. When I ran as non-root, I got errors with respect to the hashes file. If I ran as root, the hases errors dd not occur. To my way of thinking, the user should not have to run as root the first time to update the hashes file.

 

It would be interesting to see if someone would take a newly installed system, make sure the above packages are installed, and then try the .rpm.

 

For now, mine is working. What the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"....

First of all, thank-you for your replies.

 

I now have Frostwire working on 2009.1

 

There was nothing wrong with the java installtion. I did some looking around as Neddie had suggested, and found another Mandriva user with the same symptoms. There output from the konsole was a match.

 

The fix ( work around ) is to download the .tar file from www.frostwire.com and expand it where you want the installation. The tar file is different, it contains the .jar files you need to run, along with the start up scripts.

 

I erased the .pack files and files and directories created by installing the .rpm version. I then used tar to expand the .tar.gz file. It worked the first try from the command line, as root and as a regular user.

 

I had a look back through the error output, I believe there was more than one problem. The ownership of root was stopping access to the hash files. unpack200 could not be found, even though it was installed on the system. I suspect that could have been fixed by altering the PATH to look in the java installation.

 

Long story short, use the .tar file.

 

For anyone familiar with Limewire, Frostwire is a work alike java program, it looks very similar to Limewire. I prefer Frostwire, it is completly free, and is much faster downloading files than the free version of Limewire. Frostwire also connects to the network faster than Limewire.

I installed 2009.1 a few days ago. I did a clean install. Most things are working without a problem.

 

I downloaded Java from Sun, ( jre-6u13-linux-i586.bin ) and installed it. In Firefox I went to Suns site to verify the version. It reports ...

I cut off several lines of 'sh: unpack200: command not found'.

 

I have done some looking around. unpack200 is used to create .jar files from packed files. When I look at the directory with most of the frostwire files, most are .pack files. There are no .jar files.

 

The problem seems to be runFrostwire.sh can not locate unpack200. I did a locate, the file is in

/usr/java/jre1.6.0_13/bin/unpack200

. I added a sym link to unpack200, but it still will not work.

 

Has anyone got Frostwire to work on 2009.1 ? If so, how? What am I missing?

Well, I had no success fixing this problem. I decided to download 2009.1, and did a clean install. I re-partitioned the disk so I wouldn't run out of space on the / partition.

 

2009.1 looks good so far. This is my first experience with KDE 4. Still discovering new things.

 

Compiz was much easier to get working on 2009.1 than it was on earlier releases. Good stuff.

 

Nothing like a clean install to fix up your old bugs. I'm considering this a resolved problem.

I'm running Mandriva 2009 on my main system. I got here through upgrades, the original clean install was 2008. For the most part the upgrade path has worked for me. However, my disk partitioning is not ideal, SDA1 is running close to 100% full. I'm going to install 2009.1, and do a clean install.

 

In an effort to delay the install, ( got many other things going on where I need this machine running ) I removed some files from SDA1 ( dumb move I know ), i wound up with errors when KDE 3.5.10 loads.

 

"No mime types installed" and "application/octet stream not installed" are the errors that appear when KDE starts up.

 

After doing a lot of searching, I know I removed some files for KDE.

 

What I would like to know, is there a way with urpmi to verify what files are installed, or missing? If I can identify what package the missing files are from, can I re-install ( refresh ) just that package?

 

I thought of deleting KDE, but I'm afraid I would wind up with a vegetable. With very little SDA1 space, I don't think this would work.

 

Other systems, most of the applications in Kmenu are missing. Desktop icons do not appear. I can still launch most applications from the command line. Interesting side light, FIrefox works fine, Konqueror will only launch from a konsole, however it is unuseable. I can not load any of the profiles for it.

 

I'm in the process of backing up my files, I'm doing that through NFS. Samba isn't working for the most part. The daemons are running, printing from a windoze system is not working, it did before I created this bug...

 

Is it possible to find out and re-install the files I deleted with urpmi?

It doesn't work the way I think it should, but it does find the word(s) if you click on "Highlight all". Not sure if this is the way the developers wanted it to work or not. Next and Previous buttons move you around the instances of what is highlighted.

I looked at /var/log/auth.log and found this - "pam_securetty(login:auth): access denied: tty 'tty2' is not secure !".

 

I see this is why I can not log through tty1 or tty2.

First of all, why would I need a user called guest? Is it necessary, and does it give me a security hole?

 

A little background. I'm running a samba server on this system, and I think the guest user is there to allow printing, without a log in by the end users. ( my family ).

 

I found a sym link in /home pointing to my home directory. Just a guess, does this give anyone connecting as 'guest' access to my home directory?

 

Second question, is about the root passwd. If I open a konsole, and su, the password I use works, I get root privileges, as expected. If I use ctrl + alt + f1 to get a command prompt, type 'root' and use the password that works from a konsole and su, the password fails.

 

I don't understand why it works with su and not through a tty.

 

How can I fix this, I would like one password that works for both.

 

I must admit, security is not my long suite...

I was having the same problem, but I was running KDE 3.5. I have Flash 10.0 r22 installed. I removed the nspluginwrapper-1.1.0-7mdv2009.0 and now the flash content works perfectly.

I'm running 2009 with KDE 3.5. I have 2009 KDE 4 on my laptop, KDE 4 I don't like, so I installed XFCE, and use it on the lappy. Been a long time mandy user, I have a copy of 9.2 installed on my old desktop in the basement. Still works well for a backup machine.

Thank-you for the reply. I have got it to work. Since I have two kernels installed, I just booted to the other kernel. I checked /dev/video and it is there. I brought up camstream, and the camera is now working. So this is now fixed, or I guess configured correctly.

 

I think what has added to the problem for me is the naming of the kernels and other related packages. I do not understand the current names, I find them confusing to say the least. It would be nice if there was a list of names, and descriptions, sufficient to allow the more casual user to figure things out.

The modules are there.

 

I installed these modules using MCC Install/remove software.

 

qc-usb-kernel-2.6.27.19-desktop586-1mnb and qc-usb-kernel-desktop586-latest. Both show installed in MCC; ie I see a green circle, white down arrow in the status column. I don't understan why they don't show up in the rpm inquiry.

then you will have to blacklist gspca and use mod_quickcam. Do you understand and know how to do this?

 

It appears gspca is not being loaded. I have never had to blacklist a module. I would need to know the file to edit to do this.

 

I have tried to modprobe mod_quickcam, I always get a Module not found error, even though I have two copies of the module.

 

Here is what I see.

FATAL: Module /var/lib/dkms_binary/qc_usb/0.6.6_6mdv2009.0/2.6.27.19_desktop586_1mnb/i586/module/mod_quickcam.ko.gz not found.

 

I tried this on both directories where I have the module, it will not load.

O.K. I have installed the qc-usb-kernel package, and dkms-qc-usb was installed.

 

I had to run Update Your System first. There is a kernel, so I ran the update. Then I installed the qc-usb-kernel package.

 

Here is the requested out put plus a little more.

Note the kernel is now 2.6.27.19-desktop.

 

I still do not get a /dev/video or /dev/video1 created. The system does not load mod_quickcam.

That sounds like a plan. It looks like I need to do a bit of research first. There are 12 packages that start with qc-usb-kernel.

 

Right now I'm running

uname -a

Linux duelie 2.6.27.14-desktop-1mnb #1 SMP Wed Feb 18 03:14:14 EST 2009 i686 AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ GNU/Linux

 

I need to figure out which package to install. I know I don't need the server ones.

 

I also looked at the dkms-qc-usb packages. I had one installed. The release showed as 2008.1, not 2009 version I should have installed. I removed the 2008.1 version, and installed the 2009 version.

 

This system was upgraded, not a clean install.

 

I will look into the kernels, and post back, with the requested info.
