  2. right im no stranger to google and the search button so ive tried atleast im trying to install amarok (obviously!) that came with a LinuxFormat CD and ive installed taglib-1.3 that came with it and now it says that cant find X includes from what ive read i need XFree-devel ive been searching for a good hour and cant find it :( any ideas please? Also while it asks to check the installation path how can i find the default install paths for stuff because so far ive installed stuff in /usr/share/newfolder and ran stuff from there. No idea if this is good practise but its worked so far

  5. Right im up and running with the firewall on standard setting (i havent touched it yet) and i can use all of my programs with no restriction but yet the update applet tells me that the network is down and in the log it gives this Checking Network: seems disabled Launching mdkupdate --applet Computing new updates... Connecting to http://www.mandrakeonline.net/online3_Remo...&host=localhost ... Something is wrong with your network settings (check your route, firewall or proxy settings) Checking Network: seems disabled any ideas guys
  6. did you download the microcode zip? or unzip it? the current version is named KQD6_R204.zip and that should be still zipped in the same directory as the rest of the speedtouchconf directory. Its obvious i know but sometimes its often missed, failing that unplug the modem and replug it in and run the script again
  7. just tick all the check boxes at in the ACPI tab of the powermanagement, thats all i did and it was and still is working fine
  8. must be your cheapo laptop :P no seriously, install the klaptop package and that should do it
  9. i take it that you dont have a little plug icon then near to the clock?? System > Config > KDE > Power Contol thats where it is, if you cant find id then you might have to install the ACPI thing that does it all for you.
  10. doubt it would do any good im primary schoola dn even some colleges they look at you like linux will take over the world or is far too complicated. Plus most people are brought up on m$ crap (me included, im just learning my ways now :P) Im guessin it makes life easier, especially when it comes to troubleshooting Linux - Edit xxx file problem solved M$ - Download this 60Mg patch and if that dont work re-install
  11. ive got the same problem but firefox solves it most of the time so i stick to using that
  12. di know about the first but knew about the second i didnt, plus the first was a little different last time i was on there, think that ill have another go later on if not ill go the long winded method untill i can afford an either net modem :P
  13. right so now im up and running im a happy bunny and in love with MDK, done a search for installin the modem but i have no idea if the frog modem is a clone of either the 330 or 530 USB modem, Mandrake tried to install it from my windows partition but couldnt find Alcaudsl.sys even though it is on my windows partition cause im flippin usin it now! I managed to get the modem workin in RH9 but that was a long winded terminal affair getting the drivers from sourceforge. Is there a quicker way to do this because im gussin that the RH old way will still work in MDK
  14. ok so i tried that and set the graphics card as a VGA as S3 wasnt in the list (i didnt try any others) ran startx and it said that it couldnt parse the file so i edited the config file and put in a Horizontal refresh rate of the the first example (30-35 i think) it now says that it cant run in 16 but mode because the chipset is unsupported at that depth :( then after it says that no screens were found. Any ideas what i can do now?
  15. Ive installed Mandrake 10.1 CE onto my laptop and cant startx window, it says that doesnt have a graphics driver installed for my card, i went through the config again but wasnt sure exactly how to set up the display correctly for my laptop. Its a Packard Bell IGO 5581 with an S3 Twister and the chip type is S3-VIA TwisterK if anyone could point me in the right direction with this please, even if the correct driver isnt installed just so long as i can boot in run level 5 ill be a happy bunny so i get up on the net in Mandrake
