  1. i was meaning to post it earlier but my connection at home is on the fritz (as usual) and i dare not login after a 3 day hiatus or else i will lose all those wonderful posts (531 to be exact when i logged in this morning). anyway, i didnt read much of the *offtopic* contents of this thread. big words hurt my tiny brain. :? :P :#: ciao!
  2. better late than never.. here is one of the local linux mailing lists oldbies' take on the article which im going to quote anyways as lurker (the archiving tool) is getting fritzy at the moment. ciao!

    NWN Beta 4

yes, i dont mind not getting a statically linked beta but a statistically SDL-linked binary would be awesome (granted i could launch nwn from it :#:). ciao!

    NWN Beta 4

not me. from what i can gather, this only crops up since client v2 and up or when SDL support is compiled dynamically. i wish bioware would release a statically compiled client (just like what opera does). :( ciao!
  5. you might also find the bochs project interesting. ill try this weekend if i can install win98 inside it. ciao!
  6. i have downloaded it but my only quirk is the dropdown menus (especially the magic wand for passwords). whenever i click on a dropdown it drops down for a split second then snaps back up and locks there. i cant even configure some things in the preference unless i will try editing it from the config file manually. :( ciao!
  7. an app being old doesnt guarantee that wine would be able to run it flawlessly (if at all) as it may contain API calls that the wine developers hasnt ported/yet to port/ported correctly/doesnt know about. cvs means concurrent versioning system. try to search for it in google and you will get a lot of hits. basically its the de-facto tool used by open-source developers around the world to synchronize the work they do. it usually is called the developer's view of the application. since updates and bugfixes are submitted and incorporated everyday, it may be beneficial to update your cvs view every couple of days so you are up to date. the advantages of using cvs is that you dont have to download everything each time you want to be *bleeding-edge* as cvs will only download the updated files, and you can get new features and bugfixes not yet available in the stable (tested) releases. the disadvantages is that since this is the developers view, new bugs can be incorporated; you are using an rpm system and compiling from source can mess your system (that's why i recommend that you use the checkinstall program when doing CVS installations). and its not simple to me, i just use it. :#: ~/.wine/wine.conf is needed because that is used to map your windows drives/linux directories to the drives used by wine. let me put it this way, wine can try to emulate the windows environment even if you dont have windows installed. sometimes it is even better this way. ill try to pm you my wine.conf as it is kind of long so you can have a template. you only need to modify the drive mappings to suit your installation. this i dont know as i only have win98 on my pc. if you are going to ask me then i would say that if nobody chimes in at this point then err on the side of caution and dont do it as NTFS writing in linux is still considered experimental even more so with XP because MS has modified the NTFS that was shipped with it. i havent done it yet but you could try running wine without using the windows dlls. i would gladly share this new endeavour with you but im hardpressed for time for quite a while now. btw, im flagging a mod to transfer this to the emulation forum where it belong and may generate more responses. ciao!
  8. hi, i was going to say that you try the cvs version but i guess that will have to wait until you get more familiar with your mandrake machine. you can get the daily (therefore updated) build binary rpm here -> wine.dataparty.no [1]. download the rpm (not the src.rpm unless you want to rebuild it [2]) package and then as root issue the command # rpm -Uvh [insert name of downloaded package here] . after that then wine is installed. but before you start wine please consider these - wine is an alpha project, meaning it is not meant for public consumption yet as it is evolving quite rapidly (you will notice this when you start using the cvs version). - being an alpha project, your mileage might vary with each windows application. the wine developers are only basing their work on shoddy windows documentation and thus 100% emulation is downright impossible. - most windows games use direct3d API. transgaming's winex project is better suited for this but you will have to build it from source. wine has made its own progress in the gaming field (i was able to run Throne of Darkness last week but without sound :#:) but it might not be enough. break a leg and have fun! ciao! [1] wine.dataparty.no has experience a HD crash. the rpm in that site should be usable though but you might want to check the winehq.org and search for an rpm. you might want to consider studying checkinstall too. :) [2] building it for your machine can give some speedups for execution of wine. but then again, the added work might not be worth it.
  9. my pleasure, its nice to be able to help once in a while. :) ciao!
  10. where is the stories? is it embedded in the forum? can you pm me the location of the PC Hub? my experiences with pcx has been blessed because i still havent returned anything. Villman charges way too much in my opinion as i dont figure on availing of their services if i can do it myself (less the expense of transporting the unit to their site). ciao!
  11. if you are referring to this one then i figure not as the distro was considered *free*. you can take it or leave it but from their point of view it would not affect the package price. and im assuming that this is all just a theoretical discussion since if you are indeed going to buy it from there then you would have to consider the shipping cost ($35 per kilogram if shipped using fedex/ups/dhl) as well as the possibility of replacement/repair if something proves to be defective. :#: ciao!
  12. sure, if it was me i would have deleted it right off the bat but i just wanted to stress out that when deleting files that you are not sure of its purpose (especially config files), its better to rename the file to something else so you can revert it if you need to. ciao!
  13. yes its a better thought when it comes to gaming. i was merely thinking that if Relic2K has the money to spare on WineX, then he might consider channeling the financial support to the wine project. wine is still useful for running some exotic windows apps that has no probability of being ported and have no native counterpart. :) ciao!
  14. I deny it Seriously :D fuzzylizard, here is what you have to compare. ramfree17 - newbie (like the sig said), no linux exposure for 4 months, severely lacking in time to explore most projects, blabbermouth  aru - mub resident bash and script nut, oldtimer, provided a supporting link i guess you already know who to believe. :#: ciao!
  15. if /etc/ptmp and /etc/gtmp both exist then they should be renamed/removed. i am only suggesting that they be renamed so that if the need arises to restore them (which i doubt since this type of question has occured before), then you can by renaming the files back. ill try to explain the message (actually, ill try to explain it as i understand it so read my sig :#:). the mandrake config tools (mcc and i think everything used within it, i.e. userdrake, rpmdrake, etc.) creates lock files (the ptmp and gtmp files above) before they can work. the lock files will have to remain in place while the tools are working. these lock files would then be removed when the task is completed and the tools exited normally. notice the word that i highlighted. if something happens that interrupts the tools from doing their termination cleanup (like your computer hanged and you pressed the power button, or if the tool hanged and you sent it the termination signal (issue man kill in a terminal)), the files will then be left existing in the /etc/ directory. the next time you execute one of the tools above, it will then try to create the same lock files and seeing that they already exist, it will halt with an error thinking that another tool (possibly another instance of the same tool) is already working in the background. my explanation is kind of messy. i hope somebody can explain it better, or else just post the sections you dont understand and ill try to explain it better. ciao!
  16. im guessing you are booting straight to level 5 (X). if thats the case then your .bash_profile (and i think .bashrc) wouldnt be read and be better off putting it in your .bashrc so every new bash interpreter created would have your modifications. i dont have an access to a linux machine right now so would somebody please confirm/deny this? ciao!
  17. remove (or rename temporarily) the lock files mentioned above and try again. this happens when the root utilites of mdk gets interrupted suddenly and doesnt get the opportunity to clean-up the files mentioned. ciao!
  18. I still doubt I will continue to support it, I have nothing against them. Just turned out to be a waste of money for the subscription. In a year they only released two major releases. WineHQ has done some great work lately. I think I may go with them over this next year. I will still keep some of my how to's on my website. then how about considering supporting the wine project? just a thought. ciao!
  19. still, its linux and just the mention of linux in a shop that is as packed as pcx is good enough advertisement for me. :) with the volume of buyers from them (im talking about the new manila branch since i bought some of my part in there), im really suprised that returning something is that painful. but at least they have chairs and an airconditioned room. :) works here. although their customizer has degraded. i remember the time when i am presented with two or more boards to choose from if i want an AMD system. ciao!
  20. sure. but i dont frequent the bioware forums (i dont know why but i have trouble loading their board). its really hard to diagnose a problem if theres not much info to start with. does the nwn client have a verbose switch? i havent thought about it until now. ciao!
  21. i have tried ravage's installer and the only hitch is that it didnt copy the erf (is this right? i cant remember) files so i fixed it by copying the files from the windows installation's texture directory. followed scape's tutorial, including the changing of ownership and permissions. and for the coup de grace, ran nwn in a commandline. and then got this message after 2 seconds (or something like this) Fatal signal caught: Segmentation Fault (SDL parachute deployed) after re-reading the tutorial, scape mentioned that the client was built using SDL1.2.5. I downloaded the rpm linked in the site, and found out that the contents conflicted with the files of libSDL1.2.?. thinking i have gone this far, i removed libSDL (together with a slew of other SDL packages, chromium and frozenbubble), installed SDL1.2.5. licked my lips and ran nwn in a commandline and then Fatal signal caught: Segmentation Fault (SDL parachute deployed) that's it, no other messages. kind of frustrating, doesnt it? ciao!
  22. yes, the keyboard and mouse is included. this is one savvy shop. i find it ridiculous that smalltime vendors are prying not-so-informed new pc users with ads like "free keyboard and mouse". my thinking is if you are selling a complete and usable desktop, the keyboard and input devices should be included. but then it must be just me. ciao!
  23. since afrosheen's server went down (i dont know the real reason), the mdkxp could be found here -> http://icculus.org/~dolson/mdkxp/. ciao!
  24. according to a local broadsheet's money page, the ratio is $1 == Php53.58 (value doubled in around 8 yrs :( ). im betting the linux bundled with the desktop is redhat 8.0. iirc, redhat prohibits distribution of the download edition under the trademarked name RedHat (a local LUG member sells burned copies under the name pulang fedora*). btw, that is also the shop that doesnt service sold units if its loaded with pirated OS (unless customers agrees that they are going to wipe out the harddisk right there and then without backing up the data). they are also one of the shops selling the cheapest hardware around here. :) ciao! *pula means red, and i guess you already know that fedora is a kind of hat.
  25. i was curious on how the prices of pc peripherals and parts are ranging nowadays so i browsed over to one of the most sought-after shops here in manila and smiled with the freebies. take a look for yourself here. ciao!
