  1. Sorry, I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I will tonight :-). I do know that the CD needs to be mounted - it's just a regular CD with 2 video files burned onto it. I know what you mean about supermount - until MDK 9.1, I always had it disabled, but it's been *very* stable for me so far. --Andrew
  2. I haven't downloaded any patches other than what's applied to the kernel RPM. I *have* tried compiling my own from these sources, but I had problems and left it at that. What I don't understand: The Makefile in the top directory has an entry that says "mdk-custom". Since changing that didn't help, where else would VMware look for the verison of the kernel sources that it is being pointed to? --Andrew
  3. I'm running the multimedia kernel. It has patches that are supposed to improve responsiveness and such. VMware is looking for the kernel sources to build some modules with, but the sources it's finding aren't matching the kernel I'm running. When i point the script to the sources (/usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.16mm-mdk/include), it says that: The directory of kernel headers (version 2.4.21-0.16mm-mdkcustom) does not match your running kernel (version 2.4.21-0.16mm-mdk). I tried editing the makefile with no luck :-( Thanks! --Andrew
  4. Hi, I'm trying to get VMware 4 running. Here is the error I get when I run the vmware-config.pl script: The directory of kernel headers (version 2.4.21-0.18mdk) does not match your running kernel (version 2.4.21-0.16mm-mdk). Even if the module were to compile successfully, it would not load into the running kernel. According to urpmi I have the mm kernel sources installed. Any ideas? I could just boot the regular kernel, but I like the patches applied to the MM kernel. Thanks! --Andrew
  5. Hi Everyone, I'm looking for software that will run under Mandrake for doing music notation. I'm thinking of something similar to NoteWorthy Composer or Sibelius (Windows and Mac Programs). Midi output is a must - I find it helps me to be able to hear what I'm writing. I've done lots of google searching, but I haven't found anything remotely close to what I'm looking for. I've tried Rosegarden, and I haven't been able to get anything else past the compile stage. Any suggestions would be appreciated! --Andrew
  6. Is swap space treated in the same way as buffered memory? I have 256 MB RAM, around 260 MB swap, and use KDE :-). If I open lots of programs, and then close them, I still see lots of swap space being used. Not that it seems slow or anything (Linux is fscking amazing at multitasking!), but I would have thought that either the swap would have been removed from memory or transfered into free RAM. --Andrew
  7. One of the things I did was to download the entire contrib packages from work (2-3 GB of rpms!). I then set that up as a urpmi source. You could do the same with your kde packages, or at the console try urpmi kde* in the directory that you saved the RPM's to.
  8. I have a CD that seems to work fine on another machine. However, accesing it under Mandrake causes a segfault. Here is the log from when I was trying to play a video in mplayer: Jun 30 12:23:21 mandrake kernel: kernel BUG at subfs.c:666! Thanks, --Andrew
  9. You can also add the ftp site to urpmi. Then, an upgrade is as simple as: urpmi.update --update (updates the update sources) urpmi --auto --auto-select --update (updates everything automatically) If you are doing an upgrade, it makes sense to not be running what you are upgrading. So if you are upgrading KDE, log into GNOME/WindowMaker/Virt. Console and upgrade from there. If you are using KDM make sure to give it a restart as well (restarting the x server should suffice). --Andrew
  10. I am using texstar's KDE rpms, version 3.1.2. I only have one user account. It's not much, but I'm not sure what else to look at. --Andrew
  11. The subject says it all! I had a couple of mime types set up in konqueror (gmplayer, bittorrents, etc), and they are lost everytime the update-menu script is run. Is there a way to fix this? I hate having to redo everything when I run an update, install something, etc. Thanks! --Andrew
  12. Opera works fine for me in both windows and linux. Press F12 and check your settings.
  13. I have java and flash working properly with Opera 7.11. All of the info you need is on this board, just search and everything is there. However, now that I have flash, I find that I more often than not have it disabled :-P --Andrew
  14. I can't seem to find it... I ran, as root: urpmi.update --update then I ran urpmi --update --auto-select I was still getting the same error. So I browsed his ftp site in Konqueror, and I couldn't find the package there either. Is KDM now a part of the KDE base package? Thanks, Andrew
  15. I'm using Texstar's kde updates. There is an update, but it says that I have to remove the kdm package to do the install. Has this caused problems for anyone else (I am using KDM to log in)... I just don't want to fsck up my system :-) --Andrew
  16. Thanks everyone for the help. I finished it up, and here are links to the sources, tiff image, etc. I printed everything on one transfer, and cut it so "Calculus Rules!" was on the back, with the equation on the front. If you want to see what I've done, go to my psuedo-homepage: http://www.sentex.net/~aberry/index.html. Feel free to make your own cool t-shirts showing your love for calculus ;-) Thanks again for the help! You guys whip the llama's ass :-) --Andrew
  17. That worked nicely, aru. What I would like is for the output to be the size of an entire page in landscape, at 600 dpi. Do I do that in the tex file, or though latex or dvips? Thanks!
  18. Damn, this is really cool :-). I've modified the file you sent me, here it is: documentclass[spanish]{article} usepackage[T1]{fontenc} makeatletter begin{document} $f(x) = frac{f(x+h)-f(x)}{h}$ end{document} A few more questions: 1. How do I get postscript output? I can't seem to find the right command/package. 2. What is the command to place some text "over" another line? It would look like a fraction without the line (this is for the lim h->0). 3. Where is there good documentation on tex commands in general? Thanks!
  19. What's the quality of a screenshot under X11? Good enough to print? Some background info: I'm making a t-shirt for calculus with the definition of the derivative on the front. I was just going to do it in OO, but I couldn't figure out how to do "lim over h->0" (it's hard to describe :-P). If someone knows how to do that properly it would be great :-) --Andrew
  20. Hi, Is there an equation editor for the Gimp, similar to the editor in OpenOffice? If not, is there some way that I can take the output of a math equation from OO and put it into the Gimp? Thanks! --Andrew
  21. Hi, Since I've upgraded to the latest KDE rpm's from texstar, kicker seems to be crashing serveral times a day. I've tried changing configurations, removing applets, but it still seems to crash. Any tips on tracking this down? Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? Thanks! --Andrew
  22. Try urpmi kde*. If that doesn't work, cd into /mnt/cdrom/where_rpms_are, and then do urpmi kde* - that works for sure (i have used that method to manually d/l texstar rpm's and install them - it works really well :-) --Andrew
  23. Can I install Ximian OpenOffice without installing the rest of the Desktop? Will it conflict with my current OO install? OT: I actually am a KDE user - has anyone seen a similar port of OO to the KDE QT toolkit? Thanks, Andrew
  24. I just found the "SSH Compression" option in Putty, which makes things better, but VNC is still faster. I had thought that because X was made for networking that their might be some lower-level ways to speed it up. --Andew
  25. I am using my Mandrake box at home, and putty (SSH forwarding) and cygwin to use my Windows box at work as an x client. It works, but it's very slow, even slower than VNC. How do I compress/optimize the X connection for my 128 kpbs upstream DSL line? Or is it better to just use VNC? Thanks, Andrew
