  1. Hi, A DNS server can resolv the IP adresses. you may choose one of the pc as the server. If not already installed, install DrakWizard: MCC->RpmDrake. Then you can run MCC->Server Config (or something like that: I'm translating) -> DNS Wizard. I've never tested it as DrakGw already installed a DNS server (bind) for me. hope this help roland
  2. Hi, Run Mandrake Controle Center (MCC), then Software Manager (hope its called like that in english: I'm translating), you enter RpmDrake. That is where you add or remove the softwares. There you can install Samba. I don't remember well 8.2 but I think there is wizard to set your pc as a samba server. If not already installed, install DrakWizard. Good luck and welcome roland
  3. Thanx you ! I'll do 3 and take the MSI one. 43 Euro (about same in $) all taxes included :!: That's incredibly cheap for a 52x32x52 ! :-) roland
  4. hi I have to buy a new cd-writer my supplier suggest me: MSI CR52-M or TEAC CD W552-e i found none on Google/Linux  What would you do if you were me ? 1- you have one of the two, it works perfectly well with Linux :-) 2- you have one, you throw it away: don't work on Linux 3- take the risk: CD-Writers generally don't have problem with Linux :? 4- find an other one you are sure it work with Linux thanks roland
  5. The problem with tar.gz, even if easy to install is that they are not on the rpm database. So if I forgot to uninstall a program installed with a tar.gzit before I install a new version using rpm, my system may start to become a mess. Personally I prefer to install _only_ with rpm, except for drivers if no choice. I think i'll try the OOo cooker rpms on 9.1 .. roland
  6. That's a joke That's the only true statement roland (looking for trouble)
  7. Can't test: I'm back to 9.1 My USB modem didn't want to work any more on 9.2 after I unplugged it (it's powered by USB even when the pc is off ) In fact I just wanted to test something with DiskDrake in 9.2.. by roland
  8. hey it's as if you think I had problems. No it worked perfectly. As you suggest I ran urpmi urpmi first. I had to do urpmi --auto-select -no-verify-rpm --force --auto two time: the first time KDE didn't want to install. Everything done on around 4 hours.:-) roland
  9. Hi, yes Mandrake 9.1 can easily provide internet sharing connection and firewall. first set the internet connection of the PC alone with MCC::DrakConnect, expert mode, uncheck local network setting for now, second set the network connections also MCC::DrakConnect. If not already installed, install DrakWizard Now you can also install DHCP server and Samba file sharing server Now install the Internet connection sharing: MCC::DrakGw. It installs a firewall (shorewall), and a DNS server for the local network (bind). Now shorewall will block samba file sharing with the server but that's an other matter that can be fixed later. I advice you install all that order and check each time you installed something. Win98 client setup is the basic one: no fixed IP addresse, leave empty GATEWAY ip and DSN ip. Remove NETBEUI and IPX/SPX protocols if present. For me it worked better with Samba as a NT Domain server and Win98 as NT Domain clients but thats an other matter too. Can't help with mac OSX clients and even Mdk clients. Must be easy with Mdk clients. roland
  10. hi, If you don't care the data already in the disk you can try this: - boot on the CD - type F1 for more options - type rescue - go to console - partition manually with fdisk roland
  11. Hi, 1) about configuring on text mode, try mcc 2) about vi:  I get crazy with it too at the beginning, To Edit type 'I' To stop editing type Escape key While you are not editing: - To quit without saving enter :q! - To save and quite enter :wq That's all I know about vi, it's enough to rescue roland
  12. After having upgraded to cooker (must be like rc2) some icons were missing on the K panel. I've had to run MCC->System->MenuDrake to restore them. roland
  13. Hem, I forgot If you want to confirm this bug or add comments its there http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5999 sud_crow ? It's still unconfirmed now roland
  14. yes, at last I could do a bug report. I hope they could do something with that. roland P.S: aRTee: didn't know disk manufacturers have tools. Thanks for the tip. I'll have a look. I know the data's are almost never completely lost. Just it seems there isn't a lot of free tools on Linux for recovery ( or I don't know them )
  15. Hi, I've installed cooker today. The bug is still there :-( I'm trying to post at cooker or bugzilla but it's not really easy. I'm still trying but if some here use to work on cooker and can help me I think in may be a good thing for everybody. Thanks roland
  16. Yes ! Worked perfectly well for me (so far: I'm 9.2 since 15mn) Seems nice, boot really fast, Mozilla is faster .. :-) Now lets destroy it testing DiskDrake  roland
  17. fast Mandrake 9.1 ? man, you've probably never tested Mandrake 9.2 !! Youuuooo ! roland
  18. No, believe me: I've did it several time to be sure: only n+1 is affected if you do it right. If your swap partition is just after the Windows partition it's easy: - downsize your Windows partition (again ;-)), - reboot so you are sure everything is clean, - do _exately_ as I did: see the first post !! if your newly created is hda<n> be sure Swap is hda<n+1> before trying to format hda<n>!! Yes. It's an important matter isn't it ? I could understand that but I'm affraid everybody is skeptical. I must reckon that it's fearfull to test. And it's possible it's already fixed on 9.2rc2. But it's possible it is _not_ fixed yet. In this case, all who helped to fix that are going to be famous :-) Me I can't do more :-(. I've eard there is a Dev forum over there. That's a job for them isn't it ? mods ?? roland
  19. if you try to format partition hd<n> and your partition hd<n+1> is swap, you can test. no big deal if you damage swap. yep, does not seems a big deal: something like DiskDrake's internal data not updated after the partitions shift. the trouble is: - I have to do this on the spare time of my spare time .. and I dan't have much spare time, - in witch langage is itwriten ? pearl I guess. I don't know pearl: only C++ & asm Gowator and sud_crow: many thanks It's good not to be alone :-) roland
  20. You are right. I'm quite sure that if I had rebooted would not have had the problem. In this case the bug is: If I had to reboot, DiskDrake _must_ have forced me to do so or at least warned me I _must_ reboot before formating ! roland
  21. the problem is _not_ with the renumbering of the partition. The problem is with what DiskDrake do _after_ this renumbering. you are wrong: it can I know, it is not the problem here. roland
  22. yes sir. I've detailed quite precisely what I did. When I rebooted as there was a partition shift Lilo.conf and fstab were no more correct: that is normal, ,I know that, the trouble is not there ! The trouble is that the first time it happen to me I've damaged /home partition, this time I redo the manipulation just to test and I've damaged the swap partition: can't mount any more. Yes. That was when I was trying to fix my /home partition. parted don't know ext3 :-( no. I don't know how to do a bug report. roland
  23. [ didn't really know where to post that ] listen: - You are quiet and concentrate, working with DiskDrake, - You have a piece of disk empty between Windows and say Swap ( typical situation after you had reduced Windows partitions ;-) ) - You select Expert mode, - You select the empty space, - You click on "Create", - A MsgBox appears that says something like ( I'm translating ) "The partitions have been renumbered" "Partition hda5 is now known as hda6" "Partition hda6 is now known as hda7" and so on .. - Click on OK The partitions display correctly now lets format this new partition - You select the newly created partition: hda5 - Click on "Format" Congratulation: You wanted to format your new hda5 patition ? You've just destroyed your hda6 partition !! Thats a DiskDrake bug of Mandrake 9.1. sure: I can reproduced the problem. So If you love Mandrake: - check as much as you want with Mdk9.1: after all I can be a mad with allucinations or the Matrix don't work with me as its me the elected or whatever but let me tell you I'm sure of what I say, - can somebody check that this bug is not on Mdk9.2rc2 ?? - if it is, please help me to inform MandrakeSoft as I don't know how to do :? Thanks roland

    ADSL MODEM Problems

Hi, can be only little help but give some hope witch is a lot. I use just the same Modem at home and had no problem to install it (I must admit it was already plugged when I did a fresh install of Mdk9.1) No need for extra driver: Mdk9.1 (download edition) already have it. I'm just surprised you need ppp and have a telephone number. Did you try MCC::DrakConnect ? Do everything on expert mode, be carefull a too small window can hide some buttons, configure only internet connection: uncheck the network setting. When you are asked whitch protocol, choose pppoa as DrakConnect suggest: something like "pppoa (Sagem USB modem)". Also, get the 2 DNS IP addresses of your ISP, uncheck "get the DNS address automatically" (or something like that) and enter them. Also check you leave GATEWAY empty. Try again with DrakConnect: that _must_ do it. good luck and welcome roland
