  1. I have played with window maker a few times. I thought it was neat, but just not my style. I was here ,

notice the number of projects! Wow!  Do that many people really use it ?

judging from replies... apparently not :)

  2. ok vmware tools in linux is tricky.

if memory serves i think it creates a cd-rom drive in /mnt.

about the network wizard, i'd say nat is the way to go, do you have a firewall running on your machine that might prevent your network from going up?

Sorry if I'm not much help but i'm used to doing this the other way around :)

  3. I'm scared if i do anything ill break my linux  :screwy:

but I'm really desperate to try and switch to it from windows.. windows is annoying

    furious3

im just left with sound and nvidia drivers for mandrake linux 9.2  :jester:

i havent downloaded a kernel source

    >>> you should

    hmm

once this install is going fine im KEEPING it fine :headbang:

ive installed nvidia drivers in redhat before  :jester:

but now i cant do it as fx 5600 is not supported.. but im not using redhat anymore

    >>> if it worked in redhat with this card it'll work in mdk. it depends on nvidia supporting linux drivers for their cards not the distros. Check the nvidia website to see for sure if you don't think drivers are available

btw do you know how to change lilo to boot mandrake as deafult as i set it to winblows just incase of linux not working

    >>> edit /etc/lilo.conf and change the line that says default= to the label that mdk has. If this confuses you just post your /etc/lilo.conf and i'l show you the changes to make

    i hate the new quotes

  4. I tried to follow the instructions, but I got an error report (log file posted as attachment). I do not know what went wrong: I got the kernel-source RPM from the exact same ftp server where I downloaded the ISO's, the kernel version seems right (I checked and it's 2.4.22-mdk10; or '10mdk' not sure about the order).

I did everything illogic-al advised me to do, but somewhere something went wrong.

Anyway, maybe the log file means something to anybody.

what kernel-source did you install and what kernel are you running. to find out the running kernel type

    uname -r

  5. Hey Gowator, Illogical

No, I still dual-boot. Getting internet to work will requir some hardware investments I suspect, I'm still checking things out.

I can download the script via my windoze system, no prob, but I'll probably also have to download the instructions. I hope you can still reach the mounted partitions (guess so)? Also, how do I get in a pure text console when booting (I think I read this was recommened). Last thing, how can I be sure I got the right version?

    Darkelve

to get a pure linux console, when you start up and get to the boot screen press [Esc] then type

    linux 3

    But first

    1. download the nvidia script

    2. download the kernel source from a mirror

    3. paste the directions from HW-01: How to install the nVidia driver into a text file

    4. Boot into linux and at the boot screen press [Esc] then type

    linux 3

    5. log in as root

    6. mount windows partition

    7. navigate to script and copy it to linux partition

    cp /path/to/nvidia_script.sh ./

    8. navigate to saved instructins and copy them

    cp /path/to/install.txt ./

    9. navigate to kernel source rpm and copy it

    cp /path/to/kernel-source.rpm ./

    10. then

    urpmi ke[Tab]

pressing the tab button will complete the filename for you

than press enter and allow urpmi to install the kernel source rpm.

    11. just follow the directions from the NVidia faq

  6. A lot of people are having problems with disappearing menus and the fix is quite simple. If in the course of updating or installing packages your menus go haywire just do

    update-menus

This will restore your menus to their working state. You can then use menudrake to set up the recovered menus however you like.

Update Menus has other options too. To find them out just type

    update-menus -h

    in a terminal/console.

Don't worry, it's a pretty short (and useful) list

  7. and its free and kde! :D

    I cant let illogic-al run around being a little KDE-zealot :P

    Bluefish rules!!!

I find it good, Quanta is too big - bloated, well it seems that way for me anyway.

    iphitus

I won't even dignify that with a response :) Actually i just did. Anyway, yes Bluefish does rule but for managing large sites quanta is still better. It's a matter of convenience which i prefer over the greater functionality quanta has. And screem, it doesn't even compare. The only thing that works in it's favor is that highlighting looks good. It couldn't even open up my index.html file.

  8. I've not actually used it myself but I've heard good things about screem, anyone tried it?  Oh, did I mention emacs can be good for this type of thing?

i've tried screem but like quanta better. I'd probably try emacs if I didn't hear so much about how it is shortcut oriented.

  9. well i use quanta for my site which makes it a lot easier to handle. It saves all files in a site into a project which loads at start and i have a handy window with only things i want in there. that means if i want to leave all images out and only have html i can do that. I keeps it organized plus it has tag completion and tag highlighting (which is really what the kate kpart does but...). I really liked bluefish when i tried it, but it didn't haven't the projects thing going and i couldn't preview my html file right in there so i stuck with quanta

  10. [Cooker] dead lg drives are not so dead

I copied this from pclinuxonline but I thought others here would like to see

    this

LG offers a solution for their sub par devices :

    Go to : http://us.lgservice.com/

Choose Product support, then Device driver, CD-ROM and "Emergency download for

Physical Dead Drive from Mandrake Linux 9.2"

There is a Dead.gif file explaining the way to reflash the drive.

    Does it work ?

  11. OK, first of all I tried to do a search on this Forum for K3B and remove K3B, and got an error of (1) less than 4 digits, and (2) something like maybe I don't know how to use "search".  OK, fine, I'll post the situation.    Being that you (or is it just me) can't copy audio CD's in K3b I am thinking about upgrading from 0.8.1-3mdk to 0.10.x in hopes that with the upgrade I will be able to copy audio cd's.

To copy audio CDs you have to create a "New Audio CD Project"

And just so you know in K3B I am suppose to drag and drop the files from the read ROM to the center area and the files won't drop after I drag.  But I have no problems copying data cd's or pictures from my PIX folder.  Of course I don't have much luck with trying to copy audio cd's with XCDroast, either.  Apparently copying audio CD's in Linux is something they haven't figured out legally how to do.

IT has been figured out and legally too :D

Anyway, my main point is I want to upgrade to the K3B in hopes it might have audio copying capabilities, so do I remove the 0.8.1 rpm before I download/install the new 0.10??  Or doesn't it matter??
but if you must remove the rpm
    urpme k3b

is all that you need to do as root. or use rpmdrake-remove and search for k3b and remove it that way.

BTW if you want to do direct CD to CD copies most burners require that you have scsi emulation turned on for both the burner and the CD/DVD-rom

Is it possible to split files that are too large to fit on a single cd or floppy?

    and then aRTee said:

    There is the simple command

    split

that allows to split files up in parts.

    man split

    to find out more.

You don't need anything fancy for such a simple action.

    and then anon said:

I use "splitpea" a command line tool. Example, say you have a 100MB file

    splitpea -s name_of_file

    Will split the file into 1MB files. To join together again, simply do;

    splitpea -j name_of_file

and that's all they said about that.

  13. i got starterbar to work after using the cooker version of the file. It also turns out (if i remember correctly) that there was a dependency which wasn't installed by urpmi because of bad packages.

In short the cooker version works (without breaking your system). but that was a while ago...
