  1. I ordered Mandrake 10.0 from the Mandrake store and then saw it for sale in the computer book section at Border's Books.
  2. After using both, I think I like XMMS better. It has a simpler interface and I don't need or care for the cd cover display thing that amarok offers. XMMS is also similar to winamp, which I like.
  3. In amarok, is there a way to stop it from fading out at the end of each song?
  4. I'm sorry guys. What I meant to ask was what's the difference between XMMS and amaroK? I don't know why I said Xine. Sorry for the confusion. So what separates XMMS and amarok?
  5. What is the difference between XMMS and amaroK? Aren't they both audio players?
  6. I have a question regarding changes to permissions using chmod. When you make changes to the group using the chmod command, that affects only the primary group to which you are a member, correct? What if you are a member of multiple groups? How would that work? Also, what if you are in, say the Users group and Bob is in the Accounting group. Bob needs to be able to read and make changes to some of your files. How do you give him permission to do this using chmod? [moved from Everything Linux by spinynorman]
  7. I'm just not down with Linspire's CNR crap and their proprietary tools. Plus, it reminds me too much of Windows and I turned to Linux to get away from Windows. I'm also not down with that yearly subscription crap along with registration fees.
  8. Thanks for all the info guys. I really appreciate it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to declare war on Microsoft. If that's how I came off, then I didn't phrase the question right. All I want is facts on the pros and cons that I can offer people should they want it. I want to be able to tell them what make Linux so great, but I also want to inform them of some of the bad things about M$ that they may not know about. Until I switched over to Linux, I had no idea how dirty M$ could play when they want to.
  9. I think I once heard someone say that when you purchase a computer, it's not yours to use as you wish....it's up to Microsoft to decide how you may use it (assuming it comes with Windows). Could someone expand on that?
  10. Hello, everyone. I was hoping you guys could give me some ammo that would be a compelling defense in choosing Linux over Microsoft. The reason I'm asking is because I want to give friends and family reasons to choose, or at least consider, a Linux distro instead of enslaving themselves to Microsoft. I'm not trying to convert anyone, just give them information so they can choose for themselves. I already know many of the benefits to Linux, but what I really need is cons against M$. I have a feeling you guys will be able to give me plenty. :D
  11. Some of these might get you started. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/007...0202418-1726461 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/059...0202418-1726461
  12. Hahaha. you've got to try this. http://www.hahahumor.com/flash-animations/...ows-edition.htm
  13. A new one called Tux Magazine is coming out soon. It seems to be geared more to newbies, which is good for me. I don't think it goes into production until March 2005. Take a look at Tux Magazine to find out more.
  14. Hey, I'm from America! I don't like Microsoft any more than you guys do, but you don't have to make it sound like we all stand behind them.
  15. I'm thinking of giving my dad a copy of that Point and Click Linux to have an alternative to the M$ world. It also comes with Mepis 2004, which is what I'm using, and I love it!! I used to use Mandrake 10.0, but it didn't work as well on my systems.
  16. I have a TDK 52X and I used to buy only TDK media, but it was alway a hassle because Circuit City was the only place around that sold it. Even if I could find it somewhere else, it was only in a ten-pack in the cases, never spindles. That forced me to try other brands. I've used Sony and Memorex and like both. I went to Walmart a couple days ago and the two big brands there were Sony and Memorex. They were both spindles of 50, but the Memorex was $2.00 cheaper, so I went with that. I don't have any experience with Imation. Unfortunately, the BX here on base only sells Fujifilm and Pengo CD-R media. Anyone ever used those?
  17. I don't know if any of you have seen this or not, but it's a petition by Linux users to ask Macromedia to make native products for Linux platforms. By signing the petition, we make our presence known and also tell Macromedia and other such companies that Linux is growing and here to stay. Linux petition to Macromedia
  18. I just received a copy of Mepis and I'm going to try that out for a while, if I can figure out how to get the wireless part set up. Wireless is such a pain in Linux. That's what kept me from using Mandrake after I moved. Mepis has a wireless configuration tool, which I like, but I still can't figure out how to get it to work. I wish I could go back to wired ethernet.
  19. Wow, Mepis sounds kind of cool! I may just try it out. :)
  20. Can anyone give me a rundown of what Mepis is? Does anyone have any experience with it?
  21. How do Ubuntu and Mandrake stack up? I'm using mandrake 10.0 right now, but I don't know anything about Ubuntu. I've noticed many users on here talk about it. What is different about it?
  22. Good old Microsoft.....nothing less than world domination will do!
  23. It pisses me off to no end that microsoft wants to sue anyone that chooses to use an operating system other than their own!! Whatever happened to freedom of choice? As for their allegations of patent violations, that's probably crap. Why wait until now to make the announcement? Because Linux is gaining popularity, that's why! They can't stand that and will do anything to stop it. I'm sure they will eventually try to come up with some BS way to sue individual users for trying to use Linux as well. It's one thing to promote your product to customers, but to discredit someone else's so you can have the monopoly on a product, and then threaten to sue others who use the competitor's product, that's crossing the line.
  24. I'm still a newbie, so I'm about to ask a dumb question...what's the command to activate ndiswrapper? What are the wireless tools and where are they located? I read somewhere that they are not installed by default and you'd have to install them from the disc. Is this true?
