  1. I've just put a third NIC in my Linux box (MDK 10.1 Official) without any issues whatsoever - except that for some reason it decided to name the third NIC eth1 instead of eth2 as expected. I suspect this has something to do with eth0/1 using the same driver module.

As for setting up the ICS - I followed Streeters manual setup the same as I did when I had 10.0 community installe but this time it didn't work. So I used the wizards - and this time they worked.

Except for Samba - which did work in 10.0

  2. I'm guessing that your eth0 is setup to receive the IP information via DHCP. With that in mind what you need to do is set it up with a static ip address and other related information (gateway, DNS etc) and then setup a DHCP server in Linux to listen to eth0 and have your Windows machines set to use DHCP for their IP addresses

    Here's a really basic howto

Asking questions is not even remotely stupid - not asking them is.

  3. Do you have the Windows box on auto-config for the ethernet?

If you do then your DNS info isn't propagating to the Windows box correctly.

Although I'm wondering why you have the cable modem connected to a switch and then to the Linux box. Can you not connect it directly to the computer?

My system is similar - ADSL router to Linux Box to 8 port switch

  4. Unable to add medium, errors reported:

...retrieving failed: rsync failed: exited with 10 or signal 0

retreival of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed

no hdlist file found for medium "update_source"

problem reading synthesis file of medium "update_source"

It does this with every mirror on the list. The only change that occurs is the first error number - most of the time it's a 9 or 10 but occasionally I've seen a 23.

  5. OK - I've installed MDK 10.0 and have it mostly working. Now that I have an ADSL connection going I want to download the updates but the update tool in the system configuration only ever gets an error 9 or 0 when trying to update. Has anyone else had this problem and how would I go about fixiing it?

    Cheers:)

  6. In my box which is running Mdk 10.0 I have 2 NICs. the first one (eth0) is working sweet. The second one I'm having some difficulty with. I've just bought an ADSL modem so that I can migrate to a BB internet connection which I want to share through the Linux box.

I set the NIC up as a DHCP/BOOTP unit so that it gets its IP from the modem. This seems to work as an ifconfig shows as having an IP in the correct range. Then I open the browser to go to the modems homepage - all good so far. When I try to log on to the modem I lose all connection with the NIC.

Now, IIRC, the NIC (an old CNet 200pro) is using Tulip as the driver.

    Any suggestions?

    Any other info required?

  7. Setup is a MDK 10.0 box with 2 NICs and a winmodem - all three working as a standalone machine. When I engage dhcpd everything continues to work and clients (Windows) can ping each other and the server. The problem occurs when I try to share the internet connection (dial up ATM) and engage the iptables.

What happens is that the dialup connection starts on boot even though it's been told not to and I can't log in to the box. I get the login pronpt but it won't accept any username/password.

I've stopped trying to start the DNS server at the same time but still have the same issue.

Any hints as to what may be wrong?

I'm on a clean install ATM with just the modem working.

  8. I too wouild like to get my HSP 56 micromodem running. I'm using Mandrake 10.1. I have found several threads on this subject and all of them seem to point to this web site at one time or another  http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pctel-linux/

Does anyone know where these drivers may be found now? As this site is gone or down or something.

Whats the chipset in the HSP? (ok - just found out there not Conexant)

I've just dowloaded and used some drivers from (these are still good B) )

Very easy to install - just told the Mandrake rpm installer where to find the RPM and it was installed automatically including the dependancies. Just remember that when you are setting up the connction to go down the manual path in drakconnect.

They do ask for money though - I paid as I considered it worthwhile to have a reliable set of drivers although they cost more than the modem :screwy:

Some modems have the support already in the package.

They also have some drivers for the Accessrunner USB modems but they're unofficial.

As for finding good newbie info for Linux on the internet :wall:
