  1. No problems to report (yet). Mandriva 2008.1 with compiz and a GeForce 7300 GT.
  2. Welcome to the MUB! Is there not a tick-box you can deselect from the GUI where you set up your sources?
  3. what changes did you add? can you still compile and run the original code?
  4. But this is only true if you have a version of Mandriva which is less than a year old or so correct? If you are using an older version of Mandriva and don't want to go through the hassle of updating, then downloading directly from mozilla.org is a good option.
  5. Yes, that is what I mean. 4GB is probably too much, but you do have 300 GB to work with ;)
  6. I would suggest ext3 for all partitions (unless you are dual booting as per Greg's post). My suggestion: /root partition: ~30 GB /swap 2 x RAM size /home ~whatever is left
  7. Another update. On my newer machine with Mandriva 2008.1, I installed the 180.44 driver without any problem. This newer machine has a GeForce 7300 GT video card. So we have the following: GeForce 7300 GT + 180.44 = OK GeForce FX 5200 + 180.44 = bad, card not supported GeForce FX 5200 + 173.14.18 = OK, but windows decoration problems persist GeForce FX 5200 + 169.04 = bad, kernel source cannot be found I realize this is getting a bit confusing since I an talking about two different machines, both with Mandriva 2008.1 :P
  8. Thanks Greg (although I don't know how you found that!) I wan unable to install the 169.04 version. The nvidia installer said it could not find my kernel sources. The sources were found with no problem when I installed 173.14.18
  9. I looked for the 169.04 version as that was suggested as an option as well. All I see on the nvidia website is 169.07?
  10. Well I tried "UseCompositeWrapper" "true" but that did not help. Next I installed the latest nvidia driver. I have a GeForce FX 5200. Unfortunately, the newer 180.xx driver does not support the FX 5200, and thus I am stuck using the newest legacy driver 173.14.18. I installed this driver, but it did not resolve my problem. I guess no compiz for me
  11. Thanks for the link Greg. B) I am going to try the simpler Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "true" first and if that doesn't work look into updating the nvidia driver. Since my problem is a bit hit and miss, it will take a few days before I am convinced if a solution is working or not. I will report back.
  12. Well I am not trying to change the windows decorations, just fix them so that they reliably work. :D I have seen variations of this problem on 3 different computers running Mandriva 2008.1. The problem is most dramatic for the low end geforce4 AGP card I previously mentioned.
  13. I am running Mandriva 2008.1 with an older AGP 4X nvidia card and compiz 0.7.6. I frequently but not consistently see windows decoration problems like the one shown. The nvidia driver 169.12 is installed. Can anyone offer any suggestions to fix this?
  14. Can you not right-click on the icon and select something along the lines of don't run at startup?
  15. Have a look at powertop if you are interested in increasing your battery life further: http://www.lesswatts.org/projects/powertop/
  16. You need to edit the xorg.conf file: change Driver "nv" to Driver "nvidia" then reboot
  17. Direct rendering needs to be ON, that is the problem. Can you post the contents of your etc/X11/xorg.conf file?
  18. RVDowning: I know you have had much trouble with 2009.0. Do you still have your 2008.1 DVD? I think I would be tempted to reinstall 2008.1 and wait for 2009.1 or even 2010.0. KDE4 should have reached equilibrium by then. On another note. Yes VI is a pain, but it is adequate if all you are doing is changing nvidia to nv. I can walk you through this if you are interested.
  19. Can you tell us what services you have running? You need to run the Mandriva Linux Control Center (mcc) to see a list of services (under System). I am a KDE user, and I am not sure if the GNOME desktop is configured the same way. Do you see a menu item called Configure Your Computer? This is how mcc is launched under KDE. Alternately, you can start it from the command line with "mcc"
  20. launch the file manager from the command line, logged in as root if you are using konqueror: su konqueror
