  1. :)/> Thanks for the help. I tried it, but it didn't resolve the problem, so I started from scratch. I opened up the driver with ark, and went through the process again. Here's what I got. 3. I put mandriva spring (2007.1) on an old laptop (Dell Inspiron 5100), and everything is going well, with the exception of wifi. 4. I had trouble logging into Mandriva because the MBR was messed up. Googling around I found a rescue disk - rescatux. It worked really well. It's a live CD based on LDE. I also tried Super Grub2, but without success. rescatux is suppose to be able to do other repairs, too (which I haven't ventured to try).
  5. I work on getting skype working so we can talk to the kids!!
  6. Ahhhhh, that explains it. :P
  7. I enable main, contrib, non-free, plf free and plf non-free backports, did a normal update via console (with MCC, it didn't give me any updates), and now the video works. Others can see me now!!! (Lucky them!! )
  8. Yup, it's there. In the same directory, there's also v4l2convert.so. In fact, with the script you gave me, I also tried that other file, with no luck of course.
  9. Thanks for the reply. When I open up skype in console, it doesn't complain about anything. Then I go to options in skype and test the video, and there are still no complaints. With the command dmesg | less, I get the following reading about CIF, which is my web cam. Thanks again. Kieth
  10. I know this topic has been covered several times, even by me, but this time I can't figure out how to get the video working. I've googled until my eyes are starting to bug out. I think I'm just missing a file somewhere, but I obviously cannot find it. As always, I'm mine own worse enemy. The problem was caused by my upgrading my system, then "demoting" it back to 2009.1. After I quit using 2009 a couple of years ago, my computer just wasn't been the same, but always had some annoying "twitches" here and there. When I had 2009.1 the first time, the video in skype was working, and even with 2010, but after going to 2011, no. I even went to using backports from MIB. That's when things were the best, but still not perfect. I got frustrated with it all, and decided to return to 2009.1. I think my computer is just getting too old for the new programs. Anyway, back to my present problem. I'm still using the script that Ian wrote for me. V4l works, because when I put this command, vlc v4l:///dev/video0, in console, vlc comes on. Obviously my web cam works with cheese, too. If I start skype in console, there are no messages. Ideas? Thanks, Kieth
  11. This is what I have in rc.local. It doesn't change DPMS at all. It's still: Did I make a mistake on the command? Thanks, Kieth
  12. Every time I boot up my computer, in konsole, I need to enter a command such as: Whether it's in root or not, doesn't matter. Anyway to make such changes permanent? Also, what command would be best, because I just randomly choose 50000 55000 and 60000. Thanks, Kieth [moved from Everything Linux by spinynorman]
  13. Ah, I forgot to mention that the monitor turns off after 15 minutes of inactivity.
  14. For some reason, at exactly 15 minutes, power is turned off to my monitor. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the screensaver, because whether set at 5 minutes or 30 minutes, nothing changes, or with Power Management, whether turned off or on, nothing changes. I've checked through the various logs, but I didn't see anything that allowed me to understand the problem. Ideas? [root@localhost ~]# uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.36.2-desktop586-2mnb #1 SMP Wed Dec 22 17:11:08 UTC 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux KDE 4.5.5 Thanks, Kieth
  15. Solved! I just had to enable desktop effects in "Configure you desktop".
  16. I log in thru kdm. Yes, with the menu button, when I push "Leave", I still have all the possible options for logging out. And as you mentioned, if I can't get this fixed, I may rename .kde. :)
  17. When I right click on my desktop and choose "Leave", I no longer have any options, but it just automatically logs me out. I installed kshutdown, which works, but it didn't give me any options when right clicking on the desktop (my usual method for turning off the computer). In "configure your desktop", "session manager", I have "offer shutdown options" checked, but, as I mentioned, I have no options. Shutting down the computer correctly isn't a problem, but why am I no longer given the options when shutting down my normal way? I'm not sure if I inadvertently removed a dependent program while installing and uninstalling some programs, or while making some changes in my desktop appearance, both of which I have done recently. Thanks, Kieth

    xsane [solved]

Mmm, I solved it by restarting my computer. :P

    xsane [solved]

For some reason, I cannot get xsane working. I've googled around a lot, and it seems to have been a problem a couple of years ago, but not recently. So far I've been unable to get it working. This is the output in consul. Any ideas on how to solve it? Thanks, Kieth
  20. Kieth

    Do I have glib?

    Try this command in Konsole.
  21. Here, in the errata page, it shows how to do it.
  22. You can look here in the 2011.0 errata page, which tells how to get rid of them.
