    grip help

It seems that: 1. The server is behaving strangely 2. You have to update the contrib repo My advice: Configure URPMI for another contrib server (there's a list at easy-urpmi) p.s. From time to time you have to update the repos any way, because new versions of packages are added and old ones removed

    grip help

    Maybe try ripperX
  3. More than six months without changing the desktop look for myself. I must have found the ultimate layout/look for me. :)) By the way, what's that media player, tyme? Or is it just a very fancy skin of XMMS?
  4. No, doesn't seem to wor [NO DVD FOUND message]. Is there another software apart from Avidemux that can stich together either .vob or .avi (xvid) files?
  5. Thanks for the advice, pmpatrick! I'll try that out!
  6. YES! Managed to open it in the new 1.4 Kword (although it took lots of time to open it) Immediately saved all the text to a plain-text file; at least that's a format a lot less likely to fail even if I can't insert images in it.
  7. Good! But I have to wait till my fav. extensions are made FF 1.5 compatible first.
  8. And why should it be a big deal if some outside URL/server is not functioning?! And what if I had no internet connection, it would not open that document then too even if the server was online? This is just MEGAlame
  9. This is the second time that OO2 seriously annoys and threatens me. The previous time it managed to zero byte my 5 month report which I had to rewrite in 6 hours. I'm considering switching to Abiword or Koffice.
  10. Managed to open the old .sxw file! Information outdated by 4 months, but still it is something. It opened in a very MS way. It froxe while trying to open that file and I clicked the X to exit the program, it froze again, then magically opened the file. No luck with the .odt file Downloading koffice 1.4, it can open .odt files, let's see, maybe I'll have more luck with it
  11. Already tried in kwrite, opens only binary mess.
  12. help! Can not open an important document. I tried to open an earlier sxw version of that document in kword and it seems that it tries to access some image that is on a internet server (and that server is offline atm) (oo.org didn't give me output) This is what I get: $ kword /home/******/Documents/dzeja/lyrics.sxw openoffice-filter: WARNING: Unsupported body element 'text:sequence-decls' openoffice-filter: WARNING: Cannot save picture: Graphic7 http://journal.bad.lv/img/icon_protected.gif openoffice-filter: WARNING: Cannot save picture: Graphic8 http://journal.bad.lv/img/icon_protected.gif openoffice-filter: WARNING: Cannot save picture: Graphic9 http://journal.bad.lv/img/icon_protected.gif openoffice-filter: WARNING: Cannot save picture: Graphic10 http://journal.bad.lv/img/icon_protected.gif openoffice-filter: WARNING: Cannot save picture: Graphic11 http://journal.bad.lv/img/icon_protected.gif openoffice-filter: WARNING: Ignoring tag office:annotation openoffice-filter: WARNING: Ignoring tag office:annotation openoffice-filter: WARNING: Ignoring tag office:annotation openoffice-filter: WARNING: Ignoring tag office:annotation kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply kword: WARNING: No LAYOUT tag in PARAGRAPH, dunno what layout to apply koffice (lib kofficecore): ERROR: Image could not be loaded! koffice (lib kofficecore): ERROR: File was not loaded! (KoPictureShared::load) Is there a way to open a document with this kind of error? I.e., maybe an option to disable the picture load query? Maybe some other program can open those Open Document files?
  13. I know what you mean, I can type with my eyes closed (well, almost :P) through xorg.conf, because I had problems with my ATi card and now I know xorg.conf very well, but there are conf files which are entirely unknown to me, because I've never had problems with them in the first place.
  14. My dear friend, that is exactly what that command above does. It appears that the problem is that I need to fake a DVD ROM and a mounted dvd. The mounting part is clear, the making of a fake dvd rom block device is not.
  15. The problem is that /dev/dvd needs to be a block device I think
  16. Thanks, though I know that particular command, it does not work the way I need though, i.e., dvd ripping software does not recognize /dev/dvd as a dvd disc if I use this particular line.
  17. Voted junior. Been using Linux since Mandrake 10.0 CE, so I have had time to learn more, but it appears that I don't need any more Linux knowledge at this moment :)) I'm not a computer science student, but quite busy in other fields, so I've no time to tinker at leasure (I have only one box), I only learn more about Linux when I have to. At this junior level I know enough to administer the system for my needs, hack a few config files, etc, but I can't do any coding and haven't tried to compile a kernel. I would probably spend more time tinkering if I had another computer.
  18. And if all fails, try to lure it back with cheese! :p sorry.. :))
  19. Hello, is there any way to mount a dvd .iso image or a unpacked dvd image onto /dev/dvd ? The problem I'm facing is that I don't have a dvd burner, so I want to compress the dvd to xvid, I can do that (with the Linux software available), but I can only xvid separate .vob files, whereas I'd like to rip the whole film. And when I want to join together the separately encoded (xvid) .vob files Avidemux does an unclean stitch with sound distortion (known bug for me). But I could encode the whole film into one xvid file if I make Mandriva believe that I have a real dvd mounted on /dev/dvd ,then the ripping software would understand it as such and my problem would be soved. Thanks!
  20. You can find all the commands on the internet too. ;)
  21. I'm comfortable with CL too. I'm relatively new to Linux, but command line has never actually scared me and there are things which I do from it exclusively, like downloading files through internet and making database backups from my website using wget. I really like the lightness of the CL and that many things can be done through it that can not be done through a GUI.
  22. I think I was 19 or 20 with Mandrake 9.1, my sister had advised it to me when she at that time was using Redhat. She later switched to Mandrake too. Got fed up with Windows, everything looked shallow in it by then and I wanted to test deeper waters with more options and prettier looks for my artsy soul.
  23. interesting.. I'll probably try again in some months (updates and all..).
  24. It looks that roughly half of the people have run into such problems, that they would not recommend the new Mandriva to newbies. This is bad.
  25. I haven't really used the 2006.0 version, but the rc1 and rc2, had some X related stabiliy issues that there never have been on 10.2. KDE or Gnome would just sometimes freeze. A xserver restart would fix the problem for some time. I have an ATi 9000 Pro card. No problems whatsoever on MDV 10.2 or Kanotix and Knoppix I could probably fix the problem as some others here have advised with installing ATI proprietary drivers, but to tell the truth I'm awfully busy and lazy at the same time and have no time to dig through xorg.conf atm, 10.2 works like a charm for me, so I haven't tried to install 2006.0 (although I had downloaded it, but other reports in this forum warned against that). There were other problems with USB, but that's another topic. ------------- As for this whole issue I'm not that angry that there are bugs, it happens and it's probably in my ability field to fix some of them, what I'm angry about is that Mandrake decided to release a badly tested, unstable Xorg it being such a vital part of the OS (yeah, yeah, real men use terminal only). I think that is irresponsible on the users. Ok, so the club members get good drivers, but still.. ----- edit: of course it may be that my xserver problems where due to some problem in some other part of the OS, just telling what I experienced
