  1. ok, I just installed 2006 rc2 boot cd worked ok, installed from iso images now applying updates thanks for the help
  2. btw, can I normally install 2006.0 from iso images using the rc2 boot cd?
  3. Are there any problems with installing from iso images on a hd partition? I think I remember it was buggy/experimental for 10.2
  4. no, no, Ian, thanks, but it's too much to ask from you I'll do the 1cd install myself and even if it won't give me an X environment I'm not without hands and will be able to download and burn cd2 from an Xless environment if needed. At the moment I'm checking Google for the list of files
  5. Thanks, Ian! It does help. :) But I'd still appreciate more info on my 3rd question if someone knows. Thanks!
  6. Hi! I've finally decided to try Mandriva 2006 Free after the quite buggy rc2, will uninstall KAT, but I have a few other questions. 1. I have a NTFS Windows partition and while I haven't logged into Windows for about 2 years I want to keep it just in case, so what's with the problem of errors while logging out from Mandriva2006 if there's an ntfs partition, is it fixed? 2. What other services do you suggest to disable in order to prevent known errors? (I have an ATI card) 3. Most importantly - what's on cd2 and cd3? can I install a well functional (that means X) Mandriva from just cd1? The thing is that I'm going to install KDE 3.5.1. from Thacs sources, so initially I'd only need some classic window manager (X environment), say Blackbox. Thanks!
  7. I have Konsole always open and among others - one root session, so copy/paste is actually the fastest way for me. But anyway, I do it so rarely that even if MUB goes the script only way, it won't mean anything much,
  8. last updated feature is really nice, but I'm suspicious that that script would take more time for me than the good old copy/paste
  9. I understand, just was not familiar with that way of setting up a 'document'.
  10. ok, you're the boss :D this is my first encounter with a publishing program
  11. Yea, I had the idea of doing this, but it seems like a dirty hack. A pity that there is no such option to automatically make all background black. Thanks for the answer though, I'll search no more.
  12. 6 months has always seemed a bit too fast of a cycle for me, I'm actually quite happy that Mandriva has chosen the one year release cycle. But then.. I'm not a bleeding edge fanatic.
  13. Installing KDE 3.4.2 from Thac is dead easy, just have to remove the previous KDE installation first. I too am not updating to MDV2006, because 2005LE is so stable, besides 2006 has all those xorg issues...
  14. Hello! I'm a bit embarrassed of this simple question, but I've been battling the damned program for many hours now, and can not seem to find how to set that my whole document has a black background and it stays black upon exporting as a .pdf. I even read the official help files, but of no use. I have Scribus 1.3.0 now Thanks! [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  15. I hope that NWN2 will be released on Linux too! And I think it will considering the pool results at Bioware's website. That could even convince me to spend some time beating up goblins :) Baldur's Gate 2 was one of my favourite games, but it too sucked on Cedega.
  16. No shit, SoulSe! :D My eldest sis spends all her free time in WoW! It's like an addiction. If I didn't live in another country than her, I'd do something about it. But yes, I generally find hiking and researching stuff about mythology more exciting and rewarding, i.e., I get something out of it too. Gaming seems too much of a time wasting for me, time that can be spent in more productive activities.
  17. Don't play games anymore, sicked over the gaming stage about a year or so ago. There are more interesting and valuable things to do. Needless to say that that has made my Linux life a lot easier. Before that I mostly played around with Cedega, but canceled the subscription because it didn't work well with my favourite game (Morrowind) and Linux ATI card support is awful! (I bought the card (ATI 9000 Pro) before I went over to Linux).
  18. So anyone has any advices? Maybe I should chmod those two files by hand.. but I don't want to compromise my security. That output is annoying...
  19. It appears on mine, but maybe you have to enable it in the kcontrol options (look n feel -> behaviour -> device icons) I don't remember what was the default setting for me.
  20. I just delete all the hidden desktop environment specific config directories in /home
  21. That is quite true. :) I too only restart my computer when kernel needs to be updated.
  22. It has been my impression that Mandriva has always been KDE centred, well since I use it anyway (9.1>). And because I have always disliked Gnome, it's no handicap for me. Good Luck!
  23. So, I tried to switch to -standart- security level in MCC, and the weird output is gone! Switched to -high-, and the output appears again. 02:47:04 draksec[11045]: Configuring msec 02:47:04 draksec[11045]: Setting security level to "Standard" 02:47:04 draksec[11045]: running: msec -o run_commands=0 -o log=stderr 2 02:47:05 draksec[11045]: Setting security administrator option to "no" 02:47:05 draksec[11045]: Setting security periodic checks 02:47:05 draksec[11045]: Setting msec functions related to network 02:47:05 draksec[11045]: Setting msec functions related to system 02:47:05 draksec[11045]: Applying msec changes 02:47:05 draksec[11045]: running: /usr/sbin/msec 02:47:05 msec: ### Program is starting ### 02:47:05 msec: Reading local rules from /etc/security/msec/level.local 02:47:05 msec: Allowing chkconfig --add from rpm 02:47:05 msec: Setting password maximum aging for new user to 99999 02:47:05 msec: Setting password maximum aging for root and users with id greater than 500 to 99999 and delay to -1 days 02:47:05 msec: got current maximum password aging for user root with command 'LC_ALL=C /usr/bin/chage -l root' 02:47:05 msec: got current maximum password aging for user avatar with command 'LC_ALL=C /usr/bin/chage -l avatar' 02:47:05 msec: got current maximum password aging for user net_crawler with command 'LC_ALL=C /usr/bin/chage -l net_crawler' 02:47:05 msec: Allowing reboot to the console user 02:47:05 msec: Writing config files and then taking needed actions 02:47:05 msec: Fixing owners and permissions of files and directories 02:47:05 draksec[11045]: ### Program is exiting ### 02:47:15 draksec[11191]: ### Program is starting ### 02:47:19 draksec[11191]: Configuring msec 02:47:19 draksec[11191]: Setting security level to "High" 02:47:19 draksec[11191]: running: msec -o run_commands=0 -o log=stderr 3 02:47:20 draksec[11191]: Setting security administrator option to "no" 02:47:20 draksec[11191]: Setting security periodic checks 02:47:20 draksec[11191]: Setting msec functions related to network 02:47:20 draksec[11191]: Setting msec functions related to system 02:47:20 draksec[11191]: Applying msec changes 02:47:20 draksec[11191]: running: /usr/sbin/msec 02:47:20 msec: ### Program is starting ### 02:47:20 msec: Reading local rules from /etc/security/msec/level.local 02:47:20 msec: Allowing chkconfig --add from rpm 02:47:20 msec: Setting password maximum aging for new user to 99999 02:47:20 msec: Setting password maximum aging for root and users with id greater than 500 to 99999 and delay to -1 days 02:47:20 msec: got current maximum password aging for user root with command 'LC_ALL=C /usr/bin/chage -l root' 02:47:20 msec: got current maximum password aging for user avatar with command 'LC_ALL=C /usr/bin/chage -l avatar' 02:47:20 msec: got current maximum password aging for user net_crawler with command 'LC_ALL=C /usr/bin/chage -l net_crawler' 02:47:20 msec: Allowing reboot to the console user 02:47:20 msec: Writing config files and then taking needed actions 02:47:20 msec: Fixing owners and permissions of files and directories 02:47:20 draksec[11191]: ### Program is exiting ###
  24. Hello! I just noticed that when I log into a xless environment, or just start a new session in a terminal (such as Konsole or Eterm, I get this line: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver/xprint-startup: line 114: /etc/init.d/functions: Permission denied It looks like this: The last things I remember doing is: * changed security settings in MCC to "high" (but that was like 3 days ago) * updated my Mandriva distribution (security updates) * installed a new mouse cursor theme I looked at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver/xprint-startup and etc/init.d/functions, but I didn't understand anything I saw  so, ummmm.... help?!
