Hello! How do I create a multipart tar.gz archive? I have a file at 1gb and I'd like to archive it as two 500mb part files. I looked at tar --help, but didn't notice anything like what I need. Or maybe I just missed it... :unsure: p.s. Maybe it's possible to make it as multipart rar or zip archive instead? Because I plan to maybe give those files over to a guy with Windows installed, so it would be nice if those files could be unarchived in Windows Thanks!

There is no Windows system, just a FAT filesystem partition. I now mounted it as user and everything is ok, thanks for advices. Maybe I'll convert it to ext3 later.

How do I set it to be mounted by user? This is my fstab entry /dev/hdc1 /mnt/fat vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850 0 0

Thanks ------- Is Firestarter more considered a more secure firewall? (I know now, it's all iptables, but I'm talking about configuration). The thing is that I have our native Mandriva Shorewall running from MCC and everything is configured just fine with some ports open for filesharing. And I wasn't considering another firewall up to this discussion. But if Firestarter is better.. Would Firestarter be a better option for a home desktop computer?

If all fails I'll just backup my backups (meh_) and reformat the partition to ext3 (there's a long story why it's a fat)

It doesn't even allow me to change permissions with chmod too!! [root@localhost fat]# chown username /mnt/fat chown: changing ownership of `/mnt/fat': Operation not permitted When I try to do this through Konqueror I get this -> If I copy a file from /mnt/fat to another partition, I can change the permissions and ownership with no problems then, but I can not do that while the file is located in /mnt/fat

Actually I have done that :D but I've never quite used it apart from some testruns, alas it stands ready if there would appear a need to. I think that it's sane to assume that I'd get a warning of a Linux virii at Slashdot or here first before. p.s. For the reference -> I don't consider myself paranoid :P and I've studied diagnostic psychiatry, but because I also study law, I like to be prepared for all realistically possible outcomes I can think of if it doesn't require unreasonable preperation in time or in money.

I checked and doublechecked - all kdeadmin packages are installed, even ended up upgrading to the latest kdebase (3.5.1-8) mde subrelease. I'm willing to suspect that they've just forgotten to compile that particular kdeadmin package!

Some of the generic rpm's work very well. I've used them for quite some cases when a Mandriva rpm was not around. But then - some don't.

All would be swell, just I don't have such an option as -storage media- under peripherals!

Hi! A simple question, but I've wasted a lot of time trying to find where to switch this damn thing off kde.. options... grumbles... When I installed new MDV and KDE a few days ago and when I attached my digicam I got prompted whether I'd like that from now on every time Konqueror opens a new window with that usb storage location. I agreed, but I didn't know then that it will have problems with my usb digicam and that I'd have to use other programs accessing it (gtkam and digikam), anyway - I want to switch that auto-opener off, someone here knows how to do it? thanks!

------- oh, and a question: why wouldn't you install Clam AV if system resources allow it? is it not a good anti virus? (not that there is a big choice for Linux) I sometimes send or forward files to people using Windows, so checking if there's a windows virii for me is a good enough reason to use Klam (KDE client for Clam)

To me my user data is a lot more important than system files. I can reinstall a fresh MDV setup in some 12 minutes or so, but restoring personal data would take a lot longer and a lot of fresh data would be lost too. Anyway, thanks to this discussion I now remembered that I haven't yet installed Clam Anti Virus on my new MDV 2006 install :D

There is no option for mode switching in the firmware menu, but everything worked fine under 10.2 so it's not my camera that suddenly got defected p.s. on 10.2 it worked in normal mode

I have a problem with accessing my usb mounted digicam (Canon A85) It is detected and when the autodetector of 2006 opens the system:/media/camera folder it shows my correct camera model (so it recognizes the cam) But when I try to further browse in the subdir where the camera folders with images should be located I get this output in Konqueror An error occurred while loading system:/media/camera/camera/camera: Unknown error Bad parameters In kcontrol in Peripherals->Digital camera when I press on the information or configure I get this message, although the 'test' button says all is ok. But I can make a successful connection with GTKAM, but! it's awfully slow, very, very, very slow. It takes about 2,5h to get 100mb across. None of this strange behaviour is there in 2005. Please help and better sooner than later, because I've got to publish one concert review.
