  1. Yes but it still doesn't fix the problem. Normally I should be able to click a file and open it with the proper application. I'm thinking about upgrading to Gnome 2.9. What do you think ?
  2. That's what I'm using but this is not a solution. It's a workaround. ;) LOL. Sometimes you have to go to these hostile places and do what you have to do "This is a daemon for collecting and maintaining information about hardware from several sources."
  3. Well, the first thing that I've noticed is that some new services/daemons are started on boot. Two of these are the HAL daemon and devfsd. What are they for ? Can I disable them ? I notice that in Gnome 2.8 wrong applications are assigned to open wrong files. For example Abiword opens all documents, except the OO specific ones. This is annoying because when I open a doc w/o extension I get the following error and Abi closes. The Application "AbiWord" has quit unexpectedly. You can inform the developers of what happened to help them fix it. Or you can restart the application right now. The Preferred applications entry from GNOME CC doesn't work. I set gedit to be my default text editor and when I click close and open PA again, Abiword is still selected. Another annoying 'feature' of Gnome 2.8 is that it gives those stupid errors in some folders like this one: The Audio view encountered an error while starting up. The location cannot be displayed with this viewer. This one occurred in the Documents and Settings/Alex folder, probably because of the ntuser.ini file that is there which Gnome considers to be an audio file. LOL. The same thing happens with .dat files which Gnome considers to be video files.
  4. I have upgraded almost everything (except some libs) but things haven't improved to much. When I do the alt-tab-ing my computer starts to work extremely slow and I'm forced to press the reset button. I notice a lot of hd activity as the led is always on when this happens. I dunno if this has anything to do with X. I have to mention that I had these programs running when it happened recently (about 5 mins ago): rpmdrake, gedit, gaim, 2 terminals, nautilus, epiphany and it's dl manager. What can be the cause of this stupid behavior ? Is it X ?
  5. Yes I remember, but at that time I couldn't even enter Removable storage because it always resulted in a segm fault. I was using Gnome 2.4 back then. Now I can do this . Cool looking theme you got there BVC !
  6. I really need this. I've noticed that thacs has a rpm for the NVIDIA LKM 2.6.8.1-10mdk but I need the 1-12 one !!
  7. Where is that located exactly ?
  8. That makes sense to me now. Reading Dolson's advice I created an empty file (touch .hidden) and typed the names of the icons in it. It sounded kinda stupid but .... anyway ... edit; Ok this is weird. 'floppy' doesn't wanna go inside .hidden.
  9. Well, I can't share it. I don't have permission. Speak with BVC. ;) That's why I don't participate in the desktop contest. It's not my work so I'm not bragging about it.
  10. 7 packages out of 6 ? Hmm this is strange ......
  11. Why don't you use the normal desktop ? Switch to Gnome, it's far better. You've fianlly made the right choice.
  12. Mmm nothing is happening. No icons were hidden from my view .... Maybe I'm doing something wrong, please detail ....

  14. Alea iacta est since you like latin I'm already running it and hasn't caused any problems so far .. Or maybe it has ? I don't know who's fault was it but Linux locked up on me. The no of procs increased from 80 to 102-3, gkrellm showed 3 users logged in (WTF?) and finally I had to restart. I don't think I was hacked. I checked the logs with last, w and who and they seemed ok.
  15. I like to have the latest version of every software so that's why I wanted an upgrade. Anyway I have already installed it and it works fine for now. I only have to install the NVIDIA drivers.
  16. Having seen so many problems with Kernels makes me a little paranoid, but I'll download the new one tonight if you say it's harmless.
  17. Ok .. thx for the help. You said to me once that 2.8 will fix this problem. Do you know when the GNOME team are goinf to fix this ?
  18. I'm currently using the 2.6.3-7 Kernel which seems to be pretty good. Should I upgarde to the latest MDK Kernel ? Is it safe, because I heard that Kernel upgrades can create big problems ?
  19. OK .... I have some more questions now that I've upgraded to 2.8. 1. Where did all the buttons go ? In 2.4 there used to be buttons for Back, Forward, Up etc.. I liked those buttons. 2. What happened to that panel in the left side of the window that offered different info about the file you just clicked ? 3. Is it possible now to fully remove the floppy, hd, cdrom and other icons that are created automatically on the desktop ?
  20. After playing a little with the command I typed this: urpmi.addmedia gnome http://wwwra.informatik.uni-rostock.de/~waschk/Mandrake/gnome2.7/ with synthesis.hdlist.cz without the " ../ " before 'synthesis......'. Then I tried to update again and this time it worked. But this resulted another set of problems ............. which I'm trying to fix ... I downloaded most of the stuff at the repository except some libs. AFAIK that's the probable cause for the errors I get. I'm downloading them now. edit; Success !! Everything is working just fine but I want to do some configuration ..... I'll mark the thread solved - Artificial Intelligence

  22. It happened to me again as I was trying to post. This is getting extremely annoying. And one more thing .... I'm still using Gnome 2.4 since I cannot update to 2.8 because of another problem. (chain of weakness  ) edit; It's not a DE issue since it happens in KDE 3.2 too; I've just checked.
  23. What do you recommend me ? An ISO generator would be excellent. I'd like to chose what packages to put on my live cd. The distro must be around 200 MB since I want to fill the entire minidisc.
