  1. I have looked at my /etc/profile and I have searched the forum and neither has fixed this (although I did figure out how to improve my bash prompt :mystismiles: )

A little while ao - my .bashrc seemed to have disappeared altogether - so my current .bashrc is one I have put together to re-enable Java etc... - it contains very little. I'm not sure what happened to the original file though.

It has just occured to me to see if there is a clue in root's .bashrc (assumin there is one) - I'll post on my progress

  2. Took a chance and went out and bought the full game anyway. Turns out that this CD has the original Wolfenstein 3D on it as a bonus. I'm sure that this at least will run on my system. Hopefully RTCW will as well - but if it doesn't then it seems as good an excuse as any to buy a new computer! :D

  3. When I first installed mandrake and opend a shell (usually konsole) different types of file would appear in different colours - directories blue, executables in green etc...

For some reason this is no loner the case - can anyone ive me any tips as to how to restore this?

It's as it was when I am logged in via su, but not a normal user

  4. OK, I have downloaded the demo (twice and from two different place) and I can't get it to install :(

When I try to run it as root I get:

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

  5. I have made a few attempts to get Half Life to run under WineX (whihc failed by the way - even with help from 2 How-Tos)  and then my guilt overcame me.  WineX should be boycotted - and I have removed all trace of it and wine from my computer.

I have paid money for this game - and will therefore play it under windows - but in future I would far rather play with games that have been natively ported to Linux.  Next bit of spare cash I have will go towards RTCW!

I am not sure whether or not the boycott winex image is DOlson's or not - but I figured no-one would mind me using it as I nail my colours to the mast - so to speak

You'll most likely have a better eXPerience in Windows anyhow.

RTCW is a *great* game. If you go on IRC sometime, we could play some MP games online together. :)

    .

As soon as I get it (could be a little while) I'll be up for some online gaming!

  7. You don't need WineX just to play Half-Life. Wine has been playing it just fine for years.

Depsite something inside me telling me I shouldn't - I tried to install Half-Life using wine - didn't get past the initialising installer screen :(

Guess I'll just have to play this on windows :(

  8. Hope this isn't a stupid question, but here goes...

I've looked on the internet for CS linux and I found some files that look like they are basically a port of CS to Linux. The thing that confuses me is that, as far as I can tell, CS is for Half Life isn't it? So if there is a port (or the files to get it running on Linux) for CS, the n surely there is one for Half Life?

  9. Is it possible to run Half Life natively? Like with Quake etc - you can download files in order to get it to work on Linux as long as you have the appropriate windows CD. Is there anything like this for Half Life?

My only alternatives are to play this game on my windows PC or through winex - I hate both ideas :(

  10. OK, I still have the NIC removed but the problem has resurfaced - I have no idea why. The only thing I have done recently is to play around with recompiling the kernel, but I doubt that this is the issue as I'm not running my new kernel.

What could cause ssh to simply time out? I am sure that my own firewall is not causing an issue. I have recently tried to ssh to my project on source forge.net and I get the same problem.

  11. I have recently attempted to compile a new kernel for my system (2.4.20) and it worked well enough for me to boot with and use it (running it now).

I do, however, get a lot of errors when booting regarding supermount - I get fs supermount not supported two or three times during boot. I went back to xconfig and I find no reference to supermount at all - any suggestions on how to get this working?

Also, whilst the compile does seem to have (basically) worked, I have no real performance improvement - which is why I bothered with the recompile in the first place. I have done as many things as modules as I could, but apart from that - I simply can't see how I could improve things any more. I do realise that it will be a bit ofa trial and error thing, but does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be worth a try? I am also aware that each system will be different, but I'm only looking for a few pointers here.

  12. My network currently consists of 4 machines: 1 server(Linux) 1 desktop(Linux) 2 laptops (windows).

At rpesent the server shares it's internet connection and printer with the whole network and protects them behind a firewall.

I would like to be able to use the server as a fileserver as well -i.e. it can mount shares from the other machines and then share them to the whole network. The point being so that I can have a central point to which any machine must go before it can mount a network share.

    Is this possible?

At first I tried to simply mount on the server using NFS and then share this mount via samba - but this didn't really work as well as I'd hoped it would. Ideally I'd like to be able to share everything with complete read/write access

  13. I use fluxbox and it is much faster than KDE and it looks soooooooooo much nicer. There is a bit of a learning curve as it it a bit different the KDE & Gnome in terms of how it is used - but with a bit of effort it proves itself a brilliant front end :D

  14. wow - I was just asking about a simple harware issue - I had no idea that sucha debate would be sparked.

I have to say, though, that everyone keeps talking about how great it is when a system automatically picks up and recongnises new hardware.  Mandrake is very good at this.  It is, however, perhaps equally important that harware should be uninstalled along with any related config files if the hardware is removed.

Not removed but rather disabled - just think of USB modems/network adapters. Do you want to re-config it each time you connect it? IMHO, in most cases you would prefer re-enabling the previous configuration.

    Fair point
