  1. I want to set up some RSS feeds in TB and have seen several "how tos" for this - but they all sa ythat when I go to add an acount I should see an option for RSS, news and blogs - I don't. I only get the option for either a newsgroup or an email account.

    What am I missing here?

  2. OK - this is more of a request for a project rather than one I'm going to start. I want to use thunderbird as my email client, but I also want to use my palm contacts for email. I use Jpilot to sync my clie.

Before anyone mentions it - I did try the thunderbird plugin and didn't get on with it, for several reasons.

So, I figured "Wouldn't it be cool if you could sync palm data with an ldap server and then get TB to use that for the contacts?"

Having searched the internet, I find lots of people talking about this, but no-one describing how to actually do it.

So - does anyone want to pick this up as a project? I would be willing to help out with testing, docs etc...

    Shouldn't be too hard...

  3. I agree that the problem is ulitmately with the KVM in that other brands of switch may well work without problems. But the reason this happens is because of how mice are controlled/accessed/polled in the kernel or something like that.

    So the solutions are:

    1) Buy a new KVM

    2) Wait for a kernel fix

    3) try unplugging the mouse and plugging it back in

My KVM switch claims to be linux compatible - but I get this problem. Windows doesn't handle it perfectly either but recovers quickly on it's own after only a second of weirdness.

  4. You shouldnt need to compile udev from source or configure it from scratch, your distro should provide packages with a basic working config.

Arthur: you only get the massive /dev with heaps of files with a static /dev/ filesystem. with devfs you dont get the huge amount of files.

Udev is really cool in what it can do, i have it making its /dev entries for my external hard drive as /dev/lacieX, my flash drive, /dev/usbstick, my sd card reader /dev/sdcard

Currently using Arch and it does have plenty of udev configs out of the box - but they need tweaking to get things like my clie etc... worknig with it...

  5. Not sure if this should be in hardware, but I figured since Udev relates to devices it probably should. Mods, feel free to move it if you disagree...

Anyway, when I last installed Linux I isntalled Udev instead of devfs because it seemed to me to be more cutting edge. Trouble is, I don;t really ahve a clue what it is or, more importantly, how to configure it. I reckon this could well be really useful to properly get to grips with it. Can anyone either explain it or point me to a useful tutorial please?

    :thanks:

  6. I'm sure there must be a way in Rosegarden to do this - but, if not, audacity can record from the output of the soundcard. So if you play back your song in Rosegarden then you can record it in audactiy. You can then export to wav or mp3...

  7. You will have a file that is either /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/xorg.conf

As root, open this file in a text editor and look for the section that relates to the mouse - if you look carefully it should be obvious.

Look for the line relating to protocol and change this to "PS/2".

You will then need to restart X - I imagine that logging out and then in again will accomplish this...

  8. Is your KVM a belkin? If so (and possibly even if not) then it's kernel bug - apparently it will be fixed in a future kernel release. So your options are:

    1) wait till the bug is fixed

    2) buy a different kvm switch

I know it's annoying - I have to live with the same problem. In the short term try either editing your X config to specify a mouse protocol of PS/2 - but you will lose any scrolling if you have a scroll wheel - or try unplugging the mouse and pluggin it back in again which may give you back a sensible mouse.

It all depends on how often you use your switch...

  9. I want to get my ipod mini to work with linux - I tried ages ago and couldn't get it working so I used windows and itunes, but now I want to try again...

I tried both HFS+ and fat and found I got much further with fat that HFS+ - but still not far enough. I have 2 major issues:

    1) I can't import the database - I think that I can't get the permissions to do it or something. I'm willing to try and create a new database - although I'd prefer to use the existing one if I can...

    2) I always get the do not disconnect on the ipod - regardless of what modules are loaded and whether it is mounted or not - any ideas on this one?

    It's a 4Gb ipod mini - 1st generation I think, although I'm not certain...

  10. My printer is connected to a computer that runs CUPS and shares the printer with all the machines on the network. Most of my other computers run windows - althoguh I occasionally boot into Linux on one of them - mostly just for fun.

Anyway, I believe I have double sided printing set up on the CUPS server, and I certainly have it configured on my windows client - butit never prints out double sided!

The printer is an HP 5550 which can do the double sided thing (kind of anyway - it tells you to turn all the papaer over half way through...)

When I try to print in windows, a dialog box comes up telling me to click continue when the printing has finished on one side and I've turned al lthe sheets over - only the print never starts until I press continue and then it just prints it all out - all one sided.

Being someone who does occasionally think about the environment (and who wants to save money on paper!) I'd really like to figure this out...

Oh - and the printer is not shared via samba - windows connects directly to CUPS...

  11. It will probably be whatever the default root password is for mandrake - no idea what that is I'm afraid... Have you tried an empty password?

Are you sure you didn't enter a password during install? I'm sure I remember mdk asking for one...

When you do get this sorted (don't worry - you will) add another user, it's not a good idea to do everything as root. It's less secure and it's easier to break your system - especially if you don't know what you're doing...
