  1. Hello, I need help on how to configure my Linksys Network PC Card ver.3. I have talked to LiquidZoo about this and he has helped me a lot, but I think I should just make a post to get everyones help. So far I don't know what do to I insert the card, and apon restart Mandrake reconizes the new hardware. I did everything it asks me to do, but I cannot get to my internet. I would like to know how to install the card, for good and how to make sure that it is installed. Also I can't configure my Router. Which is also a Linksys Wireless Access Point Router with 4-Port Switch Model: BEFW11S4. I hook up everything correct, but even connecting to the router from my computer directly won't allow me to access the router. I need step-by-step on how to install the Router & the wireless card. Also when I configure my wireless card can I hook up to the internet thrue other peoples routers? For say I have one at home and I take my laptop to a friend and use his router to connect to the internet? Is this the beuty of Wireless card? All help and comments will be greatly appreciated. I have uprmi installed by the way. also I believe that I have the drivers on CD it's just a cd that I got with the card and I remember using it when I installed it on Windows XP. -Luis

    CD???

Yeah that TAB trick is great I just started using it and I can't tell you helpfull it is to install some of those tar.gz files. Instead of typing it and getting typos then I can just hit the TAB key and it puts it in for me, great trick too bad it didn't say anything about it that tutorial that I took on command line. -Luis
  3. Sorry about that I just found out that in order to that the file must me an rpm. Which I have just taken a look at the mozilla website and the downloads come in the tar.gz format. I guess bvc is probably the way you want to go, but if you can get a hold of the update that is an rpm, then use the post I have provided on top. -Luis
  4. I thought that when you wanted to update something you will just download it from the site in the rpm format, and type in rpm -Uvh <name_of_file> Of course substituting the ( <name_of_file> ) for the actual name and without the "< >" This is what I did to update my GAIM. But bvc is most likely right since he is more experienced. -Luis
  5. I never used firefox I just know that it's a browser. If you have your Urpmi set up you can try this, Urpmi firefox Thats what I had to do when I wanted to install Mozilla ( I of course subsituted firefox for Mozilla ). When I did that for Mozilla it installed a shortcut. Heres the website were you can get your Urpmi set up. Friendly FAQ Again I'm not sure if firefox is on urpmi but install urpmi anyways, it will save you fustrations of installing packages, mostly everything that you can download is in urpmi, all you need to do is just type in Urpmi <name of the file > and if there is a package for it will install it. I'm very amazed by the capabilities of Urpmi. If other guys can please make corrections to this if any of this information is wrong please notify me, once again I'm triying to help but not with the wrong information. -Luis

    CD???

Perfect just what I wanted to hear, hope all this helps Sherpa. I wish I can help you on more of your posts but I'm new and learning so I can only help with the stuff that I know or have experience my self. -Luis
  8. If your running KDE all you need to do is Right-click on your desktop>Configure Desktop...>Screensavers. There is a settings section to make your screensaver start to work make sure that there is an X besides " Start screensaver automatically " Also if you want other types of screensavers check the the topic on this forum labeled " Matrix Screensaver " This will tell you how to install Xscreensaver, which is a program that gives you a lot of different options of screensavers, If you get bored with that slide show ( which I did ) you might want to give xscreensaver a try. As far as your mouse cursor I have no clue on making it bigger. Hopefully some one here will know how to. -Luis

    CD???

I'm new to this so I think that the command that takes you back to your home directory is cd ~/ and to back to the last directory is this cd ../ Try both of them I think they just worked for me. -Luis P.S Hey Liquidzoo tell me if this info is right. I want to help people but I don't want to give the the wrong information, I read a Tutorial on command line. I just tried it and it works, post if anything is wrong with it or if there is another way
  10. Yeah my friend is going thrue some of the same problems. On his computer programs close for no reason just out of the blue. Also we have experienced a lot of freezing. We would be running miltiple windows and it will freeze. I don't know if he has posted anything about it, but I'm guessing he might of fixed it, don't know how. Some one will give you the help your looking for. -Luis

    Xscreensaver

    I completely agree. -Luis
  12. Hey go that that web site labeled easy uprmi, follow the instructions. Then if you would like I have Xine installed. I just got done configuring it so that it will play DVD's. Here's the link to the post Playing DVD's There is a bunch of good information, I think this might be what your looking for to play most internet videos, it installed a bunch of plugins, hope this helps, if you other guys don't think this is helpfull since I'm new, you can say so and I'll take my responce out, just I would like to give some back to the forums. -Luis

    Xscreensaver

I would send you a screenshot but Im new I don't know how to put one in or even make one. I just got to Konsole and type in this, xscreensaver-demo This pulls up a screen, that has a list of all the screensavers, and the time that you want it to start, and then how much time before it stops, and turns of the monitor, if you know how to put in a screenshot tell me and I'll more more than glad to provide one. -Luis
  14. I had the same problem, but I was having a hard of a time moving that bar around and seeing how much space was available, never had enought to even install more than 2 packages. So I just check the " Empty entire disk " now I'm running Mandrake by it's self, and trust me you can't regret it. Try this if you want and if your friend doesn't like it then he can use his recovery disks ( if he has them ) to start windows back up. Dual-boot didn't work for me so this is what I did. Many people out there do run both operating systems on their computer, didn't work for me. -Luis

Yeah thats what I have too. I have or I think I sitll might have a file of what I do, Incase when I do re-install linux, I already know what to do. So far I don't have any more problems so far. Yesterday was kind of weird my computers fan would not stop running. Like it was processing something that just kept on running and running. I just shutdown the computer. Besides that everything is running smooth just a little problem with the xscreensaver thing but someone has already started another topic about it so I'm watching it closely. Thanks. -Luis
  16. Jet2k5

    Xscreensaver

Hmm that seems to be the same problem I'm having, every time that I shutdown my computer and start it back up, the scrensaver is never running unless I start xscreensaver. Some one knows the answer out there. I was running, $ xscreensaver once that closed down I couldn't access it again it said that it was already running in another window but I could never see it. So some one suggested that I run this $ xscreensaver-demo don't know what it does, but I open it up configure my stuff and then close it and then open it up again. I'm going to try the one thats up on top ^ xscreensaver-command -prefs I'll have to try this, This should be an interesting topic. -Luis

Or do you guys just know because when you guys first started you guys had some of the same issues? Thanks a bunch! Hey also how can I look up all the hardware, like you the name and stuff like you have for your laptop, the specs, I don't really remember them. -Luis

Ok so let me get this right, do you want me to install one of the two? Ok I have KDE so I should instal the Kaffeine. Then after I do that do you want me to install, or run this command you posted, I just ran the command ^. And this is what it returned, # urpmi xine -a One of the following packages is needed: 1- glibc-devel-2.3.3-10mdk.i586 2- uClibc-devel-0.9.21-3mdk.i586 What is your choice? (1-2) Which one do I choose, also I will just wait to see if you did want me to install one of the gxine or kaffeine first. I just got thrown of by the (and probably the way you want to go). I just got back from baseball I practice for about 4 hours, so forgive me if I'm a little slow. -Luis

Thanks liquid Zoo, yeah I'm use to if the computer is acting weird just restart and it most of the time the problem with be solved, same thing when the computer started to lag. Umm for the xine it sounds great, so is this what I should do? # urpmi xine is that all? If so Im going to this right now................ And this is what I get. # urpmi xine The following packages contain xine: gxine libxine1 libxine1-devel oxine xine-aa xine-arts xine-dxr3 xine-esd xine-faad xine-flac xine-gnomevfs xine-plugins xine-ui xine-ui-aa xine-ui-fb xine-vcdx xine-win32 xinetd xinetd-ipv6 xinetd-simple-services Hmmm. What does this mean? How do I install it then? Sorry about the last post but this is what the erro message was when I clicked on the VideoCD dropdown menu thing Totem could not play this media (Video CD) although a plugin is present to handle it. You might want to check that a disc is present in the drive and that it is correctly configured.. How can I give you guys like the name of everything that I have installed on my laptop? Usually in windows I would type something " dxdiag " and it will give me all that information. Is there a command like that for Linux? If so I wan't to give you guys all the detail about my computer, sorry I didn't do this from the beginning. -Luis

I'm working my A** of to learn as much as I can, so far I have learned tons, anyways Im going to read that post and see what I can make out of it. Also what is Xine? Is that another media player or what? -Luis

I would defenetly go with Urmpi they had recommended it too me when I started and I LOVE it. Some programs just can't get any more easier to run. Also check out the forum I don't know where it exactly it is but theres some topic that teachers you how to open files, inluciding those tar. gz. Trust me you can't go wrong with Urpmi -Luis

Wow Im really really lost on this one...............
