  1. Hello everyone,

Ok so finally I was able to install Arch on my computer. So far I just added it so LILO can boot it up with the help of tyme and cybrjackle.

Now the new thing I need to find out is what to install to finally boot into it!

Some of the things I have done already is,

    pacman -Suy

Guess that updates all the programs, ( by the way I'm chroot'd in to arch )

and now I need to get my wireless or Internet working under arch, I have a linksys WPC11 card, and so far I have done,

     pacman -S wlan-ng26

so far I have no Idea what so over to do from here, as far as xorg and DE and WM to install or what to do, so I'm asking you guys to help me out, I'm triying to read some of the FAQ by wiki .

    Thanks,

    -Luis

Here are some tips to tune your system.

    Good luck

Thanks for the link look very very good. Have you tried those tune ups your self? I would try but I'm scared I might bork my system again :( and I sure don't want that now that I have it running so cool and good. I'll try in a few weeks or so, hopefully this post won't be going anywhere

  3. lol don't worry I got Windows installed along with Partition Magic, so from here I'm going to do some custom partitioning just asking me for some partitions that I don't know about like,

    /var

    /usr

I thought those would be included in /.

  6. For mobility card Non on those drivers ever ever worked for me. Like I have said many many times what solved my problem is by taking the Drivers that came with MDK and c ompile them into the kernel. That fixed all my problems that I have ever ever had with any graphic related problems.

I have the Mobility M6 , and now it's runs a hell of a lot better than it did when I just used the modules.

  7. resizing partitions is the most risky thing you can do to them. Backup!

me? Aside from using partition magic 8 to do it, I would drop to init 1

Copy /usr to the new location

    cp -fR /usr /home

NOTE: cp will take a loOOOoooong time

    Move /usr

    mv -f /usr /usrOLD

Link the new /usr in /home to the proper location

    ln -s /home/usr /usr

reboot to make sure all is well

    Remove the OLD /usrOLD

    rm -fR /usrOLD

use at your own risk :D

Those are some grean instructions there bvc but I'm still lost I was thinking about doing it from a Live CD. Can you explain how to do it from there?

  8. I'm sorry for that I have no Idea how that came to be here is the real link,

I am positive that I put this link up, I'm now sure that some one was messing around with my post, because I did this last night and I checked the link and it worked.

  9. You don't really need to have it match your kernel I ran a 2.6.3-7mdk with a 2.6.3-16mdk kernel source.

As for the ATI I have had the same problem but after I fixed that problem, and it tells you on their website steps to fix it, I ran into more errors that not even the website ( ATI ) knew the answer to. So pretty much after I had answered all the questions it asks for installation ( about 40 ) It asked to reboot and when I did it messed up stuff with X.

So this was a while ago when I was a total newbie once I got dumped into console since X could not boot up I got so mad and I didn't know what to do. So I re-installed linux and I remember I insulted the guy who helped me. But then I noticed I had just made me look very very stupid.

So after that I gave up and just less than 4 days a go I compiled my own kernel everything worked great. I compiled the ATI drivers that the kernel uses into the kernel. After that everything else works just great. I went from 640 frames , from now to a staggering 3500 frames. Might seem crappy but I am running a Mobility M6 32mb. So for me it was just the greates thing that I have ever accomplished. And really the only solution that I have see to this.

  10. Why dont you do the easiest?

Resize /home to 20 GB and then resize / to take up all that extra space.

I think you need to umount the partitions before you can make any changes in them, so id recommend you to use a LiveCD with QTParted (=Partition Magic alike) included, i.e. knoppix.

Thanks, that is what I had planned at first but some one told me that it's not possible. I have Knoppix right now. I just have to know how to use it or mount the partitions on it. If you can maybe explain it a little better than I'll be able to get this over and done with.

    Thanks a lot.

  11. aargh, I want a faster computer :P I wanna install Gentoo!! but It would take days, and my mum isn't happy with that fact :P

I found out by compiling my own kernel my computer got faster, I think it was the option of having the kernel set to use my P4. And also my ATI drivers if that has had anything to do with the speed. You should try to compile your kernel some time. It's fun, and it's well worth it.

  12. Hey sorry to hear that, I ran into the same problem little over a week ago, no on knew how to restore it so I had to re-install.

Right now I have a thread open to find out how to make more space on / . Our problem seems to be that /usr is with /.

Read the post on this Section ' Partition ' hopefully I will get some cool new tips on how to go about it. Hope to see this work for the both of us.

  14. Is it that cartoon program? Where it's like you and a friend talking to each other and then what you type comes in little bubbles and you can animate all the cartoons etc? If that's it I haven't used something like that in over 3 years when I had my windows 98 machine. If so then I don't know such a thing for Linux, there probably is something out there like that.
