  1. yes, the two boxes ping and work just fine. In fact if I run x0rfbserver (the ancestor to the KDE desktop sharing) I can connect just fine. I do connect by IP address, but the issue is that the *server* is issuing a reverse-DNS query which doesn't get answered since the client is on the same LAN and uses a non routable address (172.16....). My best guess is that the server is trying to log something like "connection request from hostname" instead of simply logging the IP address.
  2. I believe this will change all my volumes, including playing movies, mp3s and the like. The colume on those is fine, it's just the system notifications that I find annoyingly loud.
  3. I guess HJ and I understood "normal desktop" as meaning two different things. If normal desktop means "a new instance of KDE or Gnome", then follow HJ's instructions. This will still open a "new" display and you won't see any windows that were open on the "physical" desktop (aka X display 0), you will get a brand new empty instance of KDE, gnome or whatever... If normal desktop means "what someone sitting in front of the machine sees before I connect" (ala PC Anywhere or XP Remote desktop) then I don;t think the VNC server supports it (it does on Windows but not on Linux). If this is what you want I believe you will need to run x0rfbserver/rfbdrake or krfb (KDE remote desktop). The VNC client is the same either way, but the VNC server doesn't give you access to the "real" desktop under linux as far as I know without using one of the servers I mentionned.
  4. It sounds like you changed the size of your desktop rahter than the resolution of the display. how did you set up your screen resolution? Go in mdk control center -> hardware -> display (I think) and you should be able to set your resolution.
  5. I'm not at the machine right now but I looked in the KDE control center and couldn't make heads or tails of the System Notification settings. I'll take a look at it tonight unless someone posts specific instructions for mdk 10 OE
  6. you can try x0rfbserver (or rpmdrake which is a gui on top of x0rfbserver) you should then be able to connect to it with the VNC client at port 5901 Also, if you install the kdenetowork-krfb package you should be able to use the KDE control panel -> Remote desktop option to setup a server that you can also connect to with a VNC client, but at port 5900 The 2nd solution is better (better compression, x0rfbserver is the ancestor of the krfb package) but I can;t get it to work on my machine because the server tries to resolve its DNS address and it's a non-routable address, but you might have more luck.
  7. have you tried installing through the mandrake control center? Go to hardware -> printers , now enable expert mode and you should be able to enter the IP address and other info for your printer, you should get a drop-down list of printer drivers and some printers have different drivers for different "printer languages" so you can try them one at a time.
  8. The pings and dings that KDE issues when popping up a warning or whatever are way too loud for my taste. Where do I adjust the volume? Edit: now that I think of it the pings and dings occur mostly (only) in Konqueror, is ther a Konqueror specific setting? (not at that machine atm so I can;t check).
  9. actually looks quite nice. I might give it a try, gkrellm can try ti be so fancy looking it's hard to read. I like the "historical" scrolling graphs though.
  10. can you explain what that statement does? i.e. what does modprobe.conf do, what does net-pf-10 mean, etc...? Trying to learn more about linux in general
  11. I didn't notice that mdk10 actually hada driver entry for Ati AIW Pro (because it selected mach64 by default). I changed to that but still no luck (yes I restarted X, I restarted the whole machine). Running glxgears gives me a framerate of 160 to 180, which I believe indicates that hardware acceleration is not working. There is a glx.iso entry in my XF86Config.4 file. not sure what to do short of buying a new video card.
  12. First you need to get lm_sensors working (do a search of this forum or google). Ideally find instructions specific to your motherboard. Once typing "sensors" at the command line returns sensible values, you can install gkrellm (in the mandrake control panel->software->install do a search for gkrellm). It'll allow you to display temperatures, fan speeds and much more (disk access, eth activity, emmory usage, you name it). Another alternative to gkrellm is ksensors. I know it was included with earlier version of mandrake, not usre if it's in mdk10 or not but you could download it from the net (just make sure you get a mandrake build for it) I'm sure there are other packages too but I think those are the two most popular and I know gkrellm is included in mdk10 OE. The hard part is getting lm_sensors working, which can range from trivial to frustrating.
  13. Do you need to enable openGL or something like that? I remember I had to go in my Xconfig file when I installed some nvidia drivers in like mdk8.2 or so. How do I find out if hardware acceleration is supported for my ATI RagePro based video card? yo guyes have fancy Radeons, I'm talking old ahrdware here so I would have expected it to be supported but it appears not to be, at least not out of the box.
  14. I did a full install of mdk10OE on top of a mdk9.2 install except that I kept the /home directory (reformatted everything else). Now, in my KDE menu I have an "Applications" entry at the top (its icon is a folder if it means anything) and its sole entry is Editors->Kate All my other apps are under "More Applications" and subfolders That doesn't seem right to me, Kate also appears in the Editors submenu in under "More Application". Furthermore, if I go in the control panel and choose the menus icons, I don't see an "Applications" entry so I can't delete it from there. - Why is this happening? (I'm gusseing it's some leftover KDE config that was in my home directory and didn;t port properly) - What should it look like (anyone got a picture of a "standard" menu after install) Edit: I found this: I don't have the "frequently used applications on top) but otherwise mine would look like this except that above Office there is a blue folder icon marked "Applications". - How do I get rid of the "Applications" entry (and optionally rename "More Applications" to "Applications". I guess I never worked with KDE menus before (always left them at whatever the install did) and I'm not sure I understand how they work. For example he control panel lists the entries in a different order than they appear on the screen. Any pointers would be appreciated. FYI, I don't know if this is related but Kate was screwed up, mostly the menu bar in Kate itself had repeated entries, one entry called "No text", etc... I uninstalled then re-instlaled it (urpme kate then urpmi kate I think, or maybe I use the control panel) and now it looks right except for the menu issue above.
  15. what kind of disks and what kind of controller/motherboard?
  16. I think it's one the component in the mandrake control center under networking (to manage/add connections).
  17. weird, didn't work easily for me in 9.2,the printer didn't appear in the list of supported printers without addid a ppd file (which was based on another printer, maybe the 1210 or something). I never tried the drivers provided by Samsung because I kept reading bad things about them (and they're not open source). anyway, it's a moot point since it seems to work fine in mdk10 (except for the autodetection bit, not sure why that is).
  18. got it working: I found the "expert" settings in the "add printer wizard" and was able to type the information in by hand. Looks like the ML-1710 was added as a supported printer in mdk10, no more manually installing ppd files, yeah!
  19. yes, it doesn;t work. It looks like reverse-DNS doesn't use the hosts file. How do I install the source rpm so that I can look at the code? I did urpmi "kdenetwork-3.2-17.1.100mdk.src.rpm", it prompted me for a bunch of dependencies (which I find weird) but sasid OK, but now I don;t see the source. I would have expected it to show up in /usr/src. What am I doing wrong? I've never "unpacked" source rpms before.
  20. You're my hero!, yes the "DISPLAY=:0 " syntax did the trick! Thanks a bunch!
  21. the problem is that x0rfb server runs on X (or "with X") so if I try to start it from the ssh command line I get "Fatal error, can't open display "")
  22. I'd like to start x0rfbserver (similar to vnc server but works with the current X display display 0. it's basically what rfbdrake does) from a command line over ssh. Is it possible?
  23. I've heard that having zeroconf enabled can slow down my network (including samba). Why would I want it and if I don't, how do I disable it?
  24. I there a way to just list the packages that would be installed without installing them? I would run a nightly cron job that emails me a list of all the packages that are out of date so that I can install them manually myself. (I can probably figure it out on my own but if someone has done it I'd love to save time) I tried using the urpmi --auto --auto-select when I was running mdk8 and ran into major issues where my system started getting totally unstable, but I think it's because I had textar/plf and cooker as part of my urpmi media so it would automatically update to unstable releases.
  25. The card in my linux machine is an ATI AllInWonder Pro (circa 1998?) and is based on the RagePro chipset. I tried launching Chromium nad it's dog slow (less than 1 frame per second): does that mean that I don't have hardware support in the drivers? (or did I simply not configure Chromium properly?) Can someone tell me if there are hardware accelerateed drivers for that card in mdk10? How about TV input from the all in wonder input (I remmeber looking for tha around mdk8 and the answer was no).
