what sound architecture do you have set as default? Auto? ALSA? OSS? other?

If you utilize the search feature, you can find many posts related to this issue
just go to the other forums (software / hardware) and take a look.
e.g. here:

hi mondo.
first of all, what kind of system do you have? (processor, ram)
second, which login-manager do you use?
third, did you experience the same with other login-managers?

hmm... did you log in as root?
try it this way:
enter your desktop, open konsole, type:
su
then enter password
now type:
drakconf
...still no result?

hmm.. the rear tires look like a kernel-bug imho. :D

ha!, i also tried the uni-rostock rpm's for gnome 2.6. the result of my update (on mkd10) was somehow more quirky.
gnome started to boot half way, then the splash-screen froze and all went dead. i had to reboot my machine, then gui got killed and needed to be fixed with XFdrake. but still, no way to log in into 2.6. this is weird...

Have you tried another sound-architecture (ALSA/OSS/...) ? Have you checked the options-menu of the different apps and what sound architecture they use? Do they match?
-
not yet, but will do it in some hours. a friend told me of that source. i hope it works. at least, he told me that the sources are okay. : )

Have I somehow uninstalled some of my Mandrake system components?
The only way you could have uninstalled system components is as root, and as you are a newbie, most likely using mandrake-control-center → software → uninstall. If you haven't fiddled around there, the components should still be there. Anyway, your system can be recovered via konsole as root with the good old "urpmi" command (type "urpmi --help" for further information).
But try bvc's link, before messing around with urpmi. ;)

hehehe... yeah most, but not all. and ark-linux or ares-desktop e.g. seem to never complete a single distro in at least two years ;)
-
is it still accessable via konsole?
-
there is already an alpha for download? sheeeesh... way too fast... mdk10 hasn't even been around for a year. and i haven't even finished tweaking my system ;)

if you want a web-shortcut on your desktop, just click with the right mouse button somewhere on the kde desktop and select: create new → data (i hope it is called this way in an english-mdk-version) → link to web (url). B)

Hi airborne.
First of all a general note: just browse through the archives (use search function) and you will find many similar topics that might help. So for future problems, try to use the info, given in other posts. ;)
Nonetheless, I will give you some possible answers to your problem:
a ) you system is still on mute-sound. open "kmix" (this can be done e.g. via konsole, simply typing: kmix) and enable all sounds on your system.
b ) your sound architecture is wrong. open "kcontrol", go to "sounds", "sound-server", then in the right window select the "hardware" tab and change the sound architecture from e.g. OSS to ALSA (the most common one).
c ) if you don't hear anything, using xmms, open the options-dialogue of xmms and change sound-output from OSS to ALSA.
I hope this does the job. :)

Hi.
I assume that you refer to the Icons of the kde-login-manager (kdm) & mandrake-login-manager (mdm).
All icons for your "users" are stored in the following folder in mdk10:
file:/usr/share/mdk/faces
To add or to change icons, you need to log in as root and modify this directory.

welcome aboard. :P
in order to help you, the mandrake-gurus need to know some things. how are your security settings, what is the info of harddrake concerning your modem? what are your network settings?

FOUL!
fedora is not a Volvo S80!!!

Yupp, I can understand that... doing it that way, they use the same lousy tactics, that M$ uses vs. Linux-Servers (although they cheat with their data :D ).
There should be another way to promote Linux-Server stuff... although it can be a very effective means of advertising products, as most people intuitivly want to compare. Just take a look at the mac-windows discussions, the discussions between win9x and winxp users, the discussions between gentoo, slack, debian,... users. I think there is nearly no way of stopping that kind of promotion. ;)

Hmm... only two persons with german translations and no native speakers? Looks as if I have a job to do. ;)
Okay, I can do some translations, if needed, as long as it doesn't eat up all of my working time. Alternatively, I can read and correct some stuff.
Language skills:
- german (native speaker)
- spanish (university-degree/half-native)
- english (university-degree)
If you need my help, just contact me. :)

it must be new. i also never heard of it before and distrowatch is usually very fast in terms of "publishing" new distros. but i must say, that i am still a bit sceptical ... is this probably a joke?...

okay, here are some more:
SUSE = VW Phaeton (tries to be more than it is)
Ark Linux = Tatra (somehow never gets completed)
fedora = Ford Mondeo (same old engine paired with new state-of-the-art-design)
Slackware = Morgan +8 (only few dare to drive this "car" and they need to know everything about their baby, as no garage is willing to repair it. the few users are proud of their "car", which is extremely fast and stable, once it runs)

One other question: Why does CGW always use an Intel if they cost more? Is there any reason, or is it just the same reason they use M$....
one of the many questions that go unanswered. siemens-fujistsu also uses intel... for no apparent reason. except m$ uses the typical "threat" of stopping the support... but who knows?

kmail is included in "kontact" since kde3.2, but you can still access it via konsole, typing "kmail".
