  1. hi luizmdk!

in order to install gimp2 you need to do some things.

    1. you have to set up some ftp-mirrors that have the files you need. don't try downloading tar.gz-files, as there are rpm-files available. so, go to here http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php and set up your mirrors, as explained on that site (using the console. just in case that you don't know what the console is: it is the black-screen symbol found in the "terminals" section of your menus.

    2. once all mirrors are set up, open the console and log in as root. this is done in the following way: type "su", then hit enter. the console will ask you for the root password. enter it now. now, you have access to the software management. okay, now type in the console "urpmi gimp2" or "urpmi gimp_2.0". you can also add an "-a", thus writing "urpmi -a gimp2" and the console will list all the files available, including plugins. you can also select the "software install" section in mcc and type there gimp2. that should also work, but console is faster and if something doesn't work the way it should, you will see which part didn't function.

    3. once all is installed, just go to your menu and start gimp2. keep in mind that you can have both gimp 1.2 and 2.0 installed at the same time. the menu will automatically add two separate gimp entries, the newer version named "Gimp v2"

    good luck. :)

  2. the benefit of firefox is that it is "smaller" (no email, no composer) thus starting faster and it is generally a bit faster than mozilla. in order to properly configure firefox, take a look here:

    http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=16075

other than that, don't expect too many differences as both browsers are based on the same source. but if you want a stand-alone browser (because you use e.g. ximian evolution for mail) than it is much better to start only a browser and not a whole network-suite.

also take a look at the plugins available for firefox. some of them are really useful. (others are simple toys.)

    :)

  3. there are two things i 'd like to ask you:

    - if you are able to tweak a system, why do you give up that early? that sounds unlogical to me, unless you pretend you are a linux veteran and are in fact a newbie to linux.

    - why did you register? only to tell us that you won't use mdk10? wow... i think there are other, more productive ways to spend time. :lol2:

i honestly don't understand what you want to achieve with this posting. either you ask for help (which will gladly be given, if asked for :D ) or you quitely install another system that suits your purposes in a better way. sorry, but this seems kinda kid-like behavior imho. :juggle:

  4. If market share was proof of 'superiority' then WinBlows would be the worlds best OS.

errrm... i think i did not express in my previous post what i meant.

so here is the second try:

everybody was blaming that linux would not be ready for the desktop. at the same time, everybody said, that mac is the "most beautiful, most intuitive, most whaddoiknow" thing you can imagine as a desktop, although windows has the biggest marketshare. so... if it is true that linux-destops overtook macintosh in numbers, then this means that the system MUST be ready for the desktop, as mac is regarded as "ready for the desktop" (i won't discuss now, which os is better (it is obvious imho :) )). if linux has a market share of, let say 5% then the simple fact that 5% use this system every day for every task is enough proof that distributors like mandrake are on the right track. and if you keep in mind that the linux-desktop numbers began to increase a lot during the last three years, then we might find computers offered with linux or windows in shops in large scale in maybe two to four years. and then it will drastically increase the number of linux desktops, i guess.

  5. here a nice little article from macminute.com. i think this is proof enough, that linux is NOT an inferior desktop system. (okay, my box is also enough proof ;) )

Linux surpasses Mac as No. 2 desktop OS

    August 4, 2004 - 18:41 EDT

HP announced yesterday that it is now shipping its first notebook, the Compaq nx5000, to come with the Linux operating system preinstalled. "This is the year that Linux overtakes the Mac on the desktop, and maybe my laptop will help accelerate that," Martin Fink, HP's vice president of Linux, said at the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo during a keynote speech. However, industry research firm IDC said it believes that this has already happened. "Linux captured the No. 2 spot as desktop operating system in 2003," said IDC analyst Dan Kusnetzky. By 2007, IDC estimates that Linux will have 6 percent of the desktop market in terms of units.

  6. i already read the first story about linux by preston gralla (who still earns his money writing books for windows), so this second story is only halfway better. if ihe writes

The ready availability of applications makes Windows superior as well. Go into your local computer store, or visit an online retailer. How much software do you see being sold for Windows? How much for Linux? An operating system is only as good as the software that runs on top of it.

then he simply hasn't understood that a linux-system usually has all the stuff you need included in the os cds. so why buy software, if you get it with your distro or free via download.

in one respect, i must admit that he is right.

And most people wouldn't even be able to install a new operating system, even if they did want to switch.

i have seen many people who are helpless when installing anything. even when they have to install a windows-app that only has one button to click on, they don't know what to do. so how should these people manage to insert a cd, boot it and install an os? :lol2:

  7. i would suggest, you should to make a so called ftp-install, in case you have broadband. then of course, the three cd's are, sorry, more or less "useless".

keep in mind that with 3 gb of hard-disk space available (next to win98 if you want to keep it), you should make a reduced install first (no bloat-apps, only the really necessary stuff) and add other tools later on. it is important that you install the basic parts first, thus having a stable "source" to which you can add other stuff via urpmi. this will save you time and headaches, in case your connection to ftp gets killed. the bad thing is: the whole process will take some time until the online(ftp)-install is complete, so prepare for some hours of work. :juggle:

you can also download the ftp-directory and then do an installation, using either the cd-rom or a hd-partition. in either case, the files that you find on your first cd should be downloaded from ftp. this is more than enough to equip you with a running os. the other stuff can be (again) dowloaded via urpmi.

third possibility: if you have a second comp, you can plug them together and do an install on the laptop via the other workbox. but don't aske me how to do it in detail. i never did such thing before, only know, that this works (e.g. via tweaked printer-cable or network :cheesy: )

    good luck

  8. harddrake gives no answers/doesn't give you info on that reader? hmm... this might sound strange, but have you tried the card reader on another comp these last days? maybe something got broken (how old is the device?). other idea is, look at your fstab. maybe some modifications to it will bring that thing back working. if nothing works, give us all info you can get on this "problem".

    good luck :)

  9. hmmm... are you referring to the kde desktop? if yes, your themes can be selected not via "configure your computer", but "configure your desktop". if you are running gnome, choose the gnome control center. for the other ones (fluxbox, icewm,...), you have to copy the styles to the appropriate styles-directory.

    ;)

  10. somewhere earlier (too lazy to search that post now ;) ), it was said, that we should enable more install-options. i thought a bit about that thing, and here are my ideas (each of these package selections should have a "advanced select" button, adding some options for individual installations) remember: the basic idea behind this is to give a working area that does not need/install automatically a default desktop:

    minimal graphic install:

gives the user only a minimal operating system that only uses the command line

    basic graphic install:

uses only lightweight windowmanagers like icewm, only one app per task installed, apps are reduced to a office-desktop.

    normal graphic install:

uses kde/gnome/... and adds some bloat like media-players codecs etc.

    full graphic install:

uses all the eyecandy available (like: superkaramba/gdesklets/qt-gtk-engine)

remember: every of these options should be able to be modified to personal tastes.

the "conventional selection" of software packages should still be there (office/server/development/...), but as a second stage.

so the installation way could be:

    starting cd-install

    selecting partitions

    selecting graphic install type

    selecting software packages

    selecting languages,...

so what do you think? is it usable or a rather stupid idea? :)

p:s: in terms of office applications: why don't the office-apps use e.g. .rtf files as default? they are fully compatible with mac- and windows-office suites and are smaller than .doc files (although a bit bigger than .swx files).

  11. no, they can't. but don't worry. you can find almost every major "old" theme (plus some new and/or improved themes) in a new version at kde-look.org. :)

the only "old" themes that do work in kde 3.2 are the icewm windecos.

  12. Wanna tinker? Do something useful!!! Don't configure just your Desktop....configure one that you and others can use to win over more windozers wink.gif Even if that mean *box's and smaller wm's.....but do something......look at iphitus!

    *looking at iphitus*

well,... i publish my eye-candy additions at kde-look.org since more than a year. so don't point fingers at me. ;)

  13. When I run startx, there are some flashing messages, indicating, I guess, some problems; the same happens when I log ou of X

can you post the messages in here? maybe we find the buggy thing.

there is no graphical splash for lilo

it just came into my mind: do you have a virus scanner enabled in your bios? this can cause a graphical "conflict" with lilo. i myself experienced lilo starting without graphical display and constantly sending error messages until i deactivated the bios-virusguard. since that day, everything works fine.

  14. 1)

The mail should be accessible through all criterias, using virtual folders, each corresponding to a query (eg: sender=me@my.pc). That is something that already exists, eg. in Evolution, made possible by the fact that a mail carries its own metadata (the headers).

... i must admit: this sounds interesting. didn't know that evolution used such thing.

    2) @gowator: thanx. at least one person on my side. will you come to the woods? i have a nice fire with some beans&bacon plus coffee. :D
