I have a Dell Inspiron 5160, running Mandrake 10.1. Everything is running great on this laptop, but when I try to plug an external monitor by hitting fn-f8, the screen goes blank and I have to reboot. I've tried booting the system with the external monitor plugged in, but it just does the same thing. I think there is a special setting I need to add to xorg.conf, but I can't find it.

Allright!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I clicked on KPPP in my menu and then clicked the "configure" button. Then I chose the "accounts" tab and highlighted my ISP. I then clicked the "edit" button. I then chose the "dial" tab and clicked on the "Customize pppd arguments" button. I then added "nobsdcomp" and "nodeflate" to this interface (Thanks "jumpedintothe fire" from JustLinux.com). I then clicked the OK button in each of the interfaces that were open and then clicked on the "connect" button and guess what? Ladies and gentlemen, I am typing this response using dial up. Thanks to all of you who helped out. Maybe someone else can benefit from this.

Where is /etc/sysconfig/network in Mandrake 10.1?

No, I didn't try different dns-servers. Can't hurt, right? I did try logging on with wvdial and it would log on and immediately disconnect. According to MCC my firewall is disabled, so I don't know how it could be the cause of the problem. I believe the info from "tail -f /var/log/messages" shown a couple of posts ago hold the key to unlocking the problem. I just don't know enough about linux to interpret the information. It's frustrating.

I'm wondering if this might be a problem with pppd and not my smlink driver? I'd hate for this to be the end of the road on this issue!

Yeah, I tried "lynx www.yahoo.com" Same thing as in firefox, mozilla, konqueror...it just hangs at looking for xxx.com I also configured ppp0 in MCC. Same thing. I feel like I'm so close! I'll bet it's just some little configuration somewhere. Too bad! Anybody else have a clue?

According to MCC, I have no firewall. I go to security>firewall and it asks "Which services would you like to allow the internet to connet to?" I have "Everything (no firewall)" checked.

OK, I changed the settings in about:config and it did nothing. Same problem. So, what do I have to do to change mru/mtu packet settings. Besides, if the settings were off for mru/mtu why do browsers work with wifi and ethernet?

I think wireless is wlan0. Anyways, I have used KPPP to try to dial-up and doesn't that use ppp0?

Hi artic, I'll try "about:config" later in the day, however, I have no problem surfing when I am using wifi or ethernet. I'd like to use Linux at work but I don't have broadband, so I need to get dial-up working or I'm stuck with Microsoft!

I got everything to work setting up my bcm9415m modem. I "modprobe snd-intel8x0m" and it installs just fine. Then I /usr/sbin/slmodemd --country=USA --alsa hw:1 It works. I configured KPPP and the modem comes on line, and tells me I'm connected at 49333!!!! Not bad, BUT I can't connect to any webpages in my browser. Thanks Arthur, I "cat config-2.6.8.1-12mdksmp | grep ICH" and got CONFIG_SOUND_ICH=m. So it's compiled as a loadable module. Why do you ask me why I'm using the SMP kernel. My laptop's processor is a P4 HT.

I've got an Intel 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem installed on my Dell INspiron 5160 laptop. I've downloaded the slmodem-2.9.10 software and drivers for this modem. It tells me in README that I need to: Configure your kernel and enable ALSA and ICH based modem support ( 'Device Drivers' -> 'Sound' -> 'Advanced Linux Sound Architecture' -> 'PCI devices' -> 'Intel i8x0/MX440; AMD768/8111 modems' ) . How can I find out if ALSA and ICH based modem support is configured in the default Mandrake 10.1 2.6.8.1-12mdksmp kernel? If I need to configure this support, how do I do that? Is there a good tutorial that will show me how?

Well, I hat to say it but I downloaded and instlaled Linuxant's WLAN Driverloader and it is working like a charm, at least for the last two days. Ndiswrapper would have locked up the computer several time by now. Maybe I'll go back to Ndiswrapper at some point in the future when a new release comes out, but I'll gladly pay the $19.95 for Linuxant's solution. It just plain works (at least so far).

I was wandering where I could look for a log of what happens when the system locks up. I.E. /var/log/where????? or somewhere else.

I downloaded and installed the manufacturer's driver (they're the same for w2000 and xp) and it locked up within 5 minutes. I've got to say that it only locks up when I drag the mouse cursor over the URL in the URL address window at the top of any browser (It's done it in firefox, mozilla and konqueror) or a field on a webpage. For example it locked up when I went to the search window on the www.linuxquestion.org site and dragged the cursor over the words "Search for..." on the www.linuxquestion.org site. I don't remember it locking up at any other time.

You mean win2000 or XP drivers, as you suggested?

Where do you get them? I used the ones that http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/index.php said to use!
