  1. Perfect! And funny thing too, I am also interested in using it with Gkrellm!! :) Rob
  2. Yes Use netbeans. I have used a lot of IDEs (Visual Studio, Visual Age, Eclipse, Forte, Netbeans)and a lot of advanced text editors (VI, emacs, Textpad, jEdit) and there is no better way to develop Java apps than Netbeans. If it had a WYSIWYG HTML/JSP editor, it would be perfect. Every day I fall in love with it a little more. I tear up just thinking about it :D Next to it, I'd say jEdit (with a bunch of plugins installed and configured) is pretty nice, but really not even close to Netbeans. Take the time and learn how to use it. You wont be sorry.
  3. Most of the time, I have no trouble copying and pasting from one application to another, with one exception: copying an image from Gimp and pasting it into a document in Open Office. I tried Paste, Paste Special... and I have tried every option for Paste Special. What really burns me about it is that 'Paste Special' works fine for me from my graphics program (Paint Shop Pro 7) to Open Office running in Windows on my PC at work. So when I go home and try to do the exact same thing on my Linux machine (Mandrake 9/KDE), it doesnt work. Any ideas?
  4. Is there a way to get an application to run without it showing on the taskbar? The reason I ask is because I created a couple of symbolic link in the Autostart folder, and would like those programs to run without showing on the taskbar. Thanks Rob
  5. I had the same problem. Check out this thread: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...1078&highlight=
  6. I finally spent the time to configure my UPS with upsd, (actually apcupsd) and now that its running I want to install the gkups plugin for gkrellm so I can display my UPS info. But everywhere I look, gkups is no where to be found. Does anyone have this plugin? If you do, can you post a link to it or email it to me? Thanks

    sound/alsa

Hey aumix is fine, but be sure you install and check out the ALSA Mixer!
  8. Dude, I'm sure its great, but more importantly: What is that Geramik theme you are using?? Do those icons come with it? It is sweeet. Please tell me, and feel free to email it to me!!! Rob
  9. No crap? Just plug it in and it will work? Awesome.

    Shockwave

It appears that there is no such thing as a Shockwave player for Linux. Is this true?
  11. Quicktime has been a total pain for me ever since moving from Linux to Windows. Is CrossOver the only real solution that works well for Quicktime in Linux?
  12. I converted all of my mp3 to oggs on my windows machine, but then I was screwed a bit because Nero didnt handle ogg when making audio cds... so I had to convert them to wav before creating the disk. That was ass. Now that I am 100% Linux, I use K3B for burning, which DOES handle ogg when making audio cds! Just another reason to love Ogg, Linux, and K3B. Thought you'd like to know.
  13. Does anyone have one of these? PCI or USB? I want to get one for Christmas, but I am concerned about support for this card in Mandrake 9.0. I have read some information that leads me to believe I can get it to work with recompiling the kernel (GULP!) and I have no idea how to do that. So, if someone could tell me if they are using one of these devices, how they got it working, and what software they are using, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
  14. 1. Yes. you can get to dalnet IRC servers using IRC clients in Linux. 2. Use xchat.
  15. Ok... so my options are now Shift Key+Left Click, or Right Click and "Save Link Target As..." Can't I just change the association for RPM from Real Player to "Prompt"? Then I can choose to save it (99% of the time) or choose to open it with Real Player (1% of the time) I guess that's the ideal solution for me... I just can't seem to find where to do that. But so far, I really appreciate all the attention this subject is getting. Rob
  16. Glad to hear I'm not just stupid. Not sure I want to remove the real player plugins tho... Its really not a huge problem, I just have to right click instead of just clicking to save. One thing is for sure: If Window's had a package manager with an RPM extension, you can bet Real would work around the extension! Little old Linux is getting pushed around again. Rob
  17. Nope... I think it has to do with "helper applications" and MIME types and stuff... but when I look for them, I dont see any defined... In Opera there's a huge list of MIME types, file extensions, and applications to handle them, I dont see that kind of list in Mozilla. Thanks anyway, now bend over! Rob
  18. I probably should post this on mozilla.org somewhere, but I've had so much success using this site that I thought I'd ask this here first: When I download an rpm file from rpmfind.net or whatever, it always trys to open it in the browser... I have to right click and select 'Save Link Target As...' I can't find out where to change this behavior anywhere. I am probably just not looking in the right place, and I will kick myself when I get the answer...but its making me nuts that I cant fix it. So, who wants to be the first person to make me kick myself?! :) Rob
  19. I dont know what you're talking about. Since my last post I have run the wire thru my floor to my rec room and into my stereo... I am getting thick, rich sound, and the only *shuddering* to speak of is coming from the bass shaking the walls... Rob
  20. This worked! Thanks a lot! My plan now is to run the 2nd speaker out to my family room, and play the music from my computer on my stereo and control it with my laptop on my wireless network using XMMS in VNC. I get chills just thinking about it :) Thanks again! Rob
  21. I have a Soundblaster Live! soundcard and can not get the 2nd speaker out to work I have been to opensource.creative.com, www.alsa-project.org, and google.com and I don't see any instructions on how to get sound out of the 2nd speaker out. I dont see a slide for it on KMix or aumix. Anyone here have an SBLive! and got sound out of the second speaker out?
  22. I have customized the selection of icons on my taskbar panel to meet my needs, and I have enabled Icon Zooming... All of the icons that I added from the menu (right click->Panel->Add->Button) zoom just fine, but I have also added an icon for Netbeans to the panel, which is a "Non-KDE application", and it does not zoom. What are the image requirements to allow an icon on the taskbar panel to change size when hovering the mouse cursor over it? Rob
  23. I have a 2gb partition that I mount as /logs... In there, I have directories for all logs, by applications (currently just Tomcat, Gaim, and Gnucash) I find where the logs are going, move the directory to /logs, and then create a link to replace it. The application now writes to /logs/<directory> and doesnt know the difference. Actually because of the way Gnucash works, my working file, as well as my logs and backups all go to the directory in logs. That way, unless I start messing with /logs, the contents are pretty safe. Unfortunately thats as far as I take it. I plan on running some cron jobs to remove really old stuff, and tar'ing the stuff up and off to cdr. But I am lazy. Anyway, its a good technique for automating much of your backup/logging, and you dont need to mess with floppies. Even if your WHOLE SYSTEM goes down and you have to FDISK, you dont have to hose the log partition. If the HD gets fried, then thats bad news... (Man, I really ought to back that up to cdr soon!) Hope this helps Rob
  24. Since my last post, I've actually started using Composer less and less, and am finding that with Netbean's test environment I can very quickly see the results of my coding... I have used Composer a few times for tricky and complicated layouts, but I am mostly editing code now. Netbeans is HANDS DOWN the best java/webapp development environment. Between its integrated ant, junit, javadoc, and tomcat as well as configurable code completion and documentation, I don't need anything else. The more I use it, the more I find to like about it. Like I said in my first post: Eclipse looks like an ugly, awkward toy in comparison. I dont mean that in a bad way... (he he) Rob
  25. I've been using GnuCash for a while now, and I really like it. I would give it a chance before you jump ship to Wine/Quicken. I exported my MS Money file to a QIF, imported it into GnuCash, and transitioned nicely. I haven't had any problems with it, and I am using the version from the Mandrake 9 cd. Good Luck.
