  1. MMM... I like the "Dark" look very much indeed. How is FC these days ? I haven't tried it since 3. ran to sluggish for me and everything seemed too locked down for my tastes by default. It did not seem to make a good family desktop back then without alot of tweaking.
  2. Solved Thanks to rolfp on the Mandriva board. I misunderstood I thought I had to create a symlink to a specific folder like I had to for Java. :o Rolfp told me to do echo $PATH it returned /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin/:/usr/games:/usr/lib/qt3//bin:/home/darkfoss/bin:/usr/lib/qt3//bin then to do ln -s /usr/local/RealPlayer/realplay /usr/local/bin to set permissions sigh so much to learn :P
  3. Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me finish this. I'm following the directions at http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html and using the command page from http://www.ss64.com/bash/ln.html I've used those pages to install Flash, Java, and Adobe Acrobat Reader. I've done the 1st 2 steps but I don't quite understand step 3. 1. Install RealPlayer 10. Done 2. Copy nphelix.so to your Mozilla plugins directory and nphelix.xpt to your Mozilla components directory. Done 3. Make sure a symbolic link to the realplay script is in your PATH. What I don't understand is where to make the symlink command from. The mozilla-firefox plugin folder perhaps or the mozilla-firefox components folder ? I wouldn't know how to remove a symlink and don't want to mess up the browser on this last step. I'm pretty sure the following is the right command; ln -s /usr/local/RealPlayer/realplay ./realplay Probably something obvious :P Thanks in advance :D [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  4. "Your xorg.conf reflects settings for both the proprietary and the free solution, with the latter one activated. But there's no loading of the Composite Extension?!? I always thought that would be an absolute necessity with the xorg drivers to get 3D desktop functions working with Xgl." Your right after I installed the proprietary drivers I ran XFdrake and made sure that option was unchecked. I did have it checked using the install default drivers. That option was not fglx btw like it had been in past Mandriva installs.Instead is was a new driver something like Radeon (Aigl) ? Aiglx worked with that combination it also worked after installing the fglx and unchecking it. I should have taken step by step notes, but since I was "winging it" I'm going to install Mona tonite and I will try to do a step by step perhaps then something useful for everyone may come about.
  5. Hehe, :P I'm not sure it seems someone pointed out to Wobo that Mona is a minor godess of the moon in norse mythology so it seems they are sticking with it.. makes sense switching to art for names you would think they would save Masterpieces for Final's Anyone up on mythology care to venture a guess for Rc2 and Final ?
  6. Just to let everyone know there is no md5 listed with the free dvd using Kb3 and md5deep it is e9baa93e584841fc9f5caceb75c01cee verified by 2 others that downloaded it in the Mandriva forum. I also double checked by downloading it from a second site. The md5's and sha1's are listed for all the cd's One Free KDE and gnome non free.
  7. Sorry to here XGL doesn't work for you. 3D and XGLboth work for me. Just lost Aiglx when I installed the propritary drivers.
  8. Just noticed a post by Wobo in the Mandiva forums thats RC1 is just released seems they ditched the mythology theme and call this one Mona. Unfortunately the link he posted does not work for me. http://ftp.free.fr.../
  9. You should give smart a try it's working very well in beta 3, also install the smart gui. At the bottom of the gui there are tabs that will tell you everything you need to know about the software and it handles dependencies very well. After that use easy urpmi/smart urpmi select the same mirriors you have for urpmi but select smart in the drop down box and paste those commands into the console. Then install KSmartTray. It will automatically track for updates and notify you when they are there. (not plf however) It's the same program used in Ubuntu since the guy developed it for Mandriva and brought it to Ubuntu when he left. No more mdkonline for me :)
  10. Cool glad it was helpful. I see the post was moved sorryabout that. Since it was hardware related I posted there.. since it involved beta 3 I thought about posting it in Cooker lol putting it here would have been my 3rd choice :P
  11. I hope this helps you and others too ;) and a big thanks to everyone that posted in, https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=33774 I used that thread as a loose guide to resolving my lack of 3D B) as suggested in the above thread I pasted Section "DRI" Mode 0666 EndSection at the bottom of the conf file.. that alone did not help so looking it over I noticed and change 2 lines # === Video Overlay for the Xv extension === Option "VideoOverlay" "on" to "off" and # === OpenGL Overlay === # Note: When OpenGL Overlay is enabled, Video Overlay # will be disabled automatically Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off" to "on" Option "CenterMode" "off" Originally I had also changed "Centermode" "off" to on and that resulted in X not starting so I had to use vim from init 3 to change that back to off issued start x and I was good to go. Note I lost Aiglx but gained XGL also glxgears only runs at 500 and 495 fullscreen no fg_glxgears Enabling FPS in PPracer and it shows anywhere from 75 to 180Fullscreen at 1280x768 running Chromium from the console tracks FPS and I got a steady 50-70 Fullscreen as well so don't get hung up on glx numbers 3D performance is what counts ;) here's the whole file, # File generated by XFdrake (rev 57713) # ********************************************************************** # Refer to the xorg.conf man page for details about the format of # this file. # ********************************************************************** Section "Files" # font server independent of the X server to render fonts. 12. Just an update the Cannon filter drivers from the Japanese ftp site I posted earlier do work in Mandy. In adition to Pixma drivers they also have just about every Canon model driver that they suport in Linux as well as src.rpm.s and even lprng drivers. Guess Lprng is an alternative to cups ? I followed the recommendation on the cups site and downloaded the cnijfilter-common and the mp500 both have to be installed to make the mp500.pdd file needed. 2007 lacked 2 files needed to install the common. Urpmi and rpmdrake could not resolve the dependencys even though I spent 2 hours re-configuring the mirrors . Google'ing I found http://rpm.pbone.net and in minutes I had found and downloaded libgtk+1.2-1.2.10-45mdv2007 and libxml1-1.8.17-9mdki586.rpm. Dependency's resolved the filterdrivers installed and I was up and running although I am limited to 600x600 dpi as the Cups website had written. I hope this may be of some help.
  13. Pretty good honest review. I just installed the 32bit version off the dvd, didn't feel like trying the 64. Even though it's beta it's far more useable for me compared to 2006. I had to wait for the Dec club edition to even have a working installation (sort of). The April One edition would not install for me either. It was such let down I let my silver membership lapse. Aiglx worked out of the box on my x800pro. The Xgl option was greyed out however nor did ppracer or cromium work. I spent almost 10 hours getting working 3D using the ati drivers from plf (8.28.08). It was only by using the Lost 3D ability thread here in the hardware section as a guide was I able to finally get it working. It only took 1 re-install because I botched it so badly :P Now I have 3D and Xgl and the Aiglx is greyed. Other than that installing the drivers for my Canon wasn't too bad. I had 2 dependencie's that urpmi or rmpdrake couldn't resolve no matter what mirror's I used. Googling around I happened to find rpm.pbone.net. What a treasure that site is in a matter of seconds using the search I was able to download both elusive dependancy packages in mdk 2007 rpm's no source compiling had my MP500 up and running in no time. Anyone new to Linux and Mandy or any rpm distro needs to have rpm.pbone.net bookmarked.. wish I had found it before. Now it just a matter of getting some of the extra's. Even though I like Kubuntu 6.06.1 LTS and Sabayon, there is something about Mandy that keeps calling me back. Hard to explain but in some strange way I feel more comfortable. I can learn without feeling so inexperienced/intimidated. Opps sorry a bit longer than I had intended
  14. There's another ftp Japanese site for Cannon drivers too. ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/ You could probably cross reference with Linuxprinting.org to see if any of those available match your models. There are src.rmp's too. My torrent just finished downloading the Mandriva beta 3 dvd. I'll test later to see if the pixma mp 500 drivers from there work. I've tried them in Kubuntu 6.06.1 using alien they seemed to compile and made the mp500.ppd. I was able to see and select it however the printer just did not respond even after restarting cups. I also tried it in Sabayon (gentoo based live dvd) everything seemed to compile.. there were some dependency errors. While I did not get a failure to install message I was unable to find the mp500 .ppd Too much of a noob for that distro I guess :P I didn't realise that Cannon support was so weak for Linux.. I got a great deal on the MP 500.. using the euro firmware I am able to print on cd/dvds. I bought the cd/dvd tray on e-bay. Here in the states if you want to print on cd's a printer will cost you 400$ . I bought mine for 150$ and the tray was 20.00 more sent from Japan. Anyway there's a nice site that tells you how to enable printing to cd/dvd's for various Cannon models. http://pixma.allhyper.com/ Or the one I prefer http://fiveeasysteps.proboards2.com/index.cgi? seems the first link is the new homepage for the second one. I didn't realize he had changed the layout.
  15. Gentoo based distro in live dvd/cd formats for both x/86 and x/86-64. It installs by using a modified Anaconda installer and copys the dvd or cd to your hd. The Full dvd install is about 7 gigs. Can have a fully functional desktop in around an hour. I'm curious if anyone here has tried it and what they think of it ? http://www.lxnaydesign.net/index.php?optio...6&Itemid=27 Note It's a RC2 release they expect the final to be out in 2 weeks, so depending on your interent connection it may not be worth your time to download the full dvd version at this time. I temporarily installed both the x/86 and x/86-64 dvd versions. With the 64 version I ran into problems trying to update the system. It has 32 bit Firefox and plug-ins "jailed" by default. Since I have basically beginners knowledge of linux and no experience with Gentoo I choose to move to 32 bit to try and learn the ins and outs of Gentoo. I'll be trying the mini cd x/86 this weekend, rather than start with the full dvd. I think it will be easier to start learning with a more basic install and add what I want as I go.
  16. I too did an upgrade form 2005le 64 to 2006 64 powerpack dvd. I only had 4 problems no internet and ati drivers not getting installed both would have been simple fixes had I taken the extra 2 min to go through the post install and checked the default installations. 1. For some reason 2006 recognized my ati card but did not update the drivers and x refused to start. I popped the dvd back in selected upgrade again and during the post install config I manually re-selected the appropriate driver, monitor ect it installed perfectly and I had working 3-D. 2. The second problem was no internet. For some reason 2006 configured the firewire port on my sb card for the default internet connection. Changing that to the ethernet connection via mmc sorted that out. 3. For some reason after upgrading my account is running as root. Still have to change that. I'm wondering when I go into the mmc if I should verify the root password before changing my account back to user and apply the user password? 4. When I go and play ppracer a box opens up over the game saying not at optimal resolution suggesting the default settings of my lcd monitor. 1280x1024 60hz and ok in a box below it. There is no way to click on the ok, the mouse stays underneath so the game is obscured, along with the games options. Overall I find 2006 to be very stable. All the files in my home partition open. Music and dvd playback survived. CD-DVD burning works even the Linux Nero version I installed previously. It was a free download for registering my windows copy of Nero 6 Ultra. Previously installed games and Cedega work as well. opps forgot to add the sound on my Audigy 2 zx was still muted same bug as in 2005le. you still need to open kmix/switches and toggle on Audigy analog/digital default is still off Not too bad for upgrade instead of a clean install.
  17. Yesterday Ati released there latsest linux drivers for both x86 and x86_64. They can be found here, https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...dge&folderID=27 Release notes can be found here. http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.16.20.html Didn't see anyone post it yet enjoy, I'm glad Ati has finally started releasing drivers every 2 months. Here's hoping theres and increase in performance!
  18. A few screenshots here, http://process-of-elimination.net/?q=kde_3_5_observations
  19. I haven't seen this posted yet, sorry if I missed it somewhere in another thread. Anyways ATI has not only released new drivers but have finally tried their hand at a new installer package aimed at helping those of us that are new to Linux. You can install them automatically like windows in an over the top approach or use the installer to create a package for your distro. The release notes can be found here, http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.14.13.html the installer release notes here, http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/installernotes.html and the drivers and installer here, https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...dge&folderID=27 Has anyone tried it yet? I'm curious as to what you think about the installer. Personally I welcome the ability to create your own packages. I'm not sure if the automatic approach is good for Linux since "overlaying" drivers in windows isn't 100% failsafe. I prefer to remove the old drivers and install the new ones "clean" every month. I'm going to try it myself later this week with Mandriva 2005 le 64, once I can access the new version with kde 3.4. That way if something goes wrong I can simply do a clean install with the latest version. Seems the bittorrent links are broken this weekend for the club members... *edit* it seems the board is bugged and logging out and back in fixed it so I could see the downloads once more now just waiting for the new 64 bit version with kde 3.4
  20. Sorry about posting in the wrong spot Anyways here's a link to the tread where the 2 above mentioned patches can be found. http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33798874
  21. Hi, I didn't see anyone post it but they are out now. Supports xfree, x.org, both 32 and 64 versions available. View the read me though you need a patch if your using the latest .10 or .11rc1 kernels, Ati wasn't able to include it in this release but will be fixed in the next one. meaning sometime in March. http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html [moved from Installing Mandrake by spinynorman]
  22. I user this windows version myself to check the downloads and cd burns http://www.md5summer.org/
  23. Being new to Linux I've found this to be an interesting thread. I had many problems with setting up Mandrake 10. I'm happy to report that 10.1 was such an easy install that I set-up a duel boot with no issues at all. My harddrives are both on the Sil sata controllers on my Abit NF7-sUltra 400 rev 2 with the latest 26 bios. My partitions are as follows: on my Maxtor sata drive 120g, sda windows xp pro 10g, programs games107g both ntfs, 3g fat 32 to share files between windows and Linux. Sdb 60g Maxtor on a sata converter partitions are 3g fat32 swap for windows, 30g for Mandrake default partitioning scheme, 27g ntfs for my Ghost images. During the final part of the installation where you can configure things I chose Grub instead of Lilo and installed it in the windows boot section of sda, and had no problems chooseing either os even though Mandrake's installed on sdb. I didn't know about the hd parm command here's what the output is.. I don't know if it's good or bad :P /dev/sda: Timing buffer-cache reads: 2052 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1025.64 MB/sec BLKFLSBUF failed: Operation not supported HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(null) (wait for flush complete) failed: Operation not supported Timing buffered disk reads: 170 MB in 3.00 seconds = 56.64 MB/sec BLKFLSBUF failed: Operation not supported HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(null) (wait for flush complete) failed: Operation not supported [root@Tardis-1 darkfoss]# hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb /dev/sdb: Timing buffer-cache reads: 2164 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1081.08 MB/sec BLKFLSBUF failed: Operation not supported HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(null) (wait for flush complete) failed: Operation not supported Timing buffered disk reads: 136 MB in 3.01 seconds = 45.14 MB/sec BLKFLSBUF failed: Operation not supported HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(null) (wait for flush complete) failed: Operation not supported Sorry if some of that wasn't needed but I didn't know what to cut out. Just wanted to share my experience here as well. Opps edit I just wanted to add I chose the 2.6 kernel during installation.
  24. ahh, sorry your board uses a different sata controller Marvell 88i8030 chip not a Silicon Image 3112. For me a newer sata bios version fixed my installation problems. Perhaps looking around http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/ either under the dfi section or the linux section you'll find some answers. If you post I'm sure someone will give you an answer they are pretty helpful there. I'm not familiar with your board to really give you better advice than you've already gotten here.
  25. Sounds much like the issues I had installing 10.0. You didn't post the version of your motherboard. I suggest you take a look for a new bios. There should be one available that updates the sil raid bios and adds Sempron(cpu) support . Abit had one for my NF7-s and it worked wonders, I was able to install 10.1 Official from the dvd in 25 min no flags or bios changes needed. It's a major update so you should clear the cmos after flashing whether by the windows flash utility or floppy.
