I did the exact same thing as Pepse for about the first year that I was trying different Linux distros. I had 2 drives installed already 1 for XP and 1 for data storage. I did not want to keep overwiriting the mbr/ bootloader every time I switched distros. It was only when I settled on Mandriva that I reconfigured my comp and started dual-booting. One of the things I love is how easy Mandriva makes setting up a dual boot.. well as long as the other os is not another Linux.. they still have not fixed that bug. You don't even have to use the rescue mode to re-configure grub. You can pop in the disk and choose upgrade rather than install. It brings you rather quickly to the post-install where you can then go ahead and re-configure grub. It will have extra entries that you want to clean up later using the MCC though...Not sure if this would work for lilo.. I avoid it like the plague...

Ty for the heads-up :) The game is really very good..alas my skills are not :P I'm getting a pretty steady 160 fps at the default settings. I didn't have to do any configuring either , I just extracted it to my home/games folder then clicked on the game script.

While 1-2 years seems like an eternity as far as hardware, I'm more than willing to hold off upgrading until their new platform comes together to show my support of their efforts. I think my 3700 can hold out for a bit. :P Hopefully this could have a trickle down effect and increase the number of games ported to Linux in time. :D * I know it's been on their board for a couple weeks, but wintertime leaves me with an erratic schedule. I did a search for Intel graphics and I did not see this topic posted already.

I prefer KDE. I guess in my case it was a first impression. The first Linux distro I tried was Fedora Core 1. It ran dog slow on my comp..and used Gnome for a desktop. I found it very spartan and everything was locked down permission-wise. I remember thinking that it's suited fine for a business environment but not a desktop I would want to use everyday. The next distro I tried was Mandrake 10.0 and when I booted into KDE my first thought was Ahh this is more like it. Gnome seemed unpolished in comparison when I booted into it. I really don't like the panel being at the top of the screen either. I know I could probably reconfigure it to my liking but I'm a creature of habit and just feel more comfortable in KDE. I do use gedit instead of kwrite and several other gnome apps though :D

New ATI drivers are out - 8.34.8. Here's the release notes. Not much different from the 8.33.6's, so unless you have the following chipset, updating may not be worth the bother. New features : This release of the Catalyst™ Linux graphics driver introduces support for the ATI Xpress™ 1250 IGP for AMD based motherboards. Yawn

I'd take a good look at the Hauppage PVR 350. It's right around $130 or so here in the states. It has the ability for hardware encoding and decoding and it seems to be pretty well supported in linux. It works well with Mythtv and VDR from what I've read. It got very good reviews when it came out.. mostly written for Windows. It should do nicely as long as you don't have the need for 2 tuners or the ability to watch and record high def TV. I've been watching the price drop and am going to buy one myself soon ;)

Click on kinfocenter and check if the system is seeing all 1 gig of ram. If it's not you can go to the MCC and under the Boot option reconfigure grub in the advanced tab Precise RAM size if needed (amount found) add 1024MB in the space. You could also try the smp kernel or one of obiwan's mm kernels. They work great too.

Hmm I guess your right I probably should have mentioned PLF.. Also the MDE versions install with everything as well.. Althought one of the files is switched. I was more concerned about Mandriva becoming aware of the problem.

I've seen a few questions about getting Azureus working in Mandriva on some forums. I've also had problems with my bank's website and it turned out to be that the version of Java that was shipped with powerpack is already outdated the version shipped was 1.5.0_8 the new is 1.5.0_10 So I've written a how to from the point of already having Java installed and trying to run the Mandriva RPM of Azureus,which is based on a Free version of Java called 1.4.2 Bouncycastle and really just doesn't work for most people. If you've just installed Mandriva without Java or Azureus you can skip the first 10 steps and head right to the installations 1. Open the MMC and do a search in installed software. 2. Search for Azureus and uninstall it. 3. Search for Java and uninstall all of it 4. Open a konsole su to root and launch konqueror as root. 5. Click on view and check the show hidden files. 6. Navigate to your home directory and delete the .azureus folder and the .java folder. **Note do not send them to the trash instead click once to highlight then hit the Edit button and select Delete. 7. Navigate to /usr/java and delete any left over files/directories. 8. Go to /usr/lib and delete any left over Java folders 9. Go to /usr/bin and delete any Java executable/ shell script. 10.Go to /usr/lib mozilla-plugins and delete any symlink to the old java then go to /usr/lib/mozilla/firefox/plugins and do the same. Once done close it out and go to http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and download the Linux RPM (self extracting file) I downloaded it to /home/larry/Download/java It should be jre1_5_0_10-linux-i586.rpm.bin Now you can either follow the instructions here to finish installing java. http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#rpm Or do what I did. I opened a konsole and su'ed to root inside the /home/larry/download/java folder and issued the chmod a+x jre1_5_0_10-linux-i586.rpm.bin command Next type ./jre-1_5_0-linux-i586-rpm.bin to start the building of the rpm. Accept at the prompt. Then I simply right-clicked on the newly created rpm and choose open with Software Installer and entered my root password at the prompt. If you did it my way go to step 2. If you followed the directions on Sun's site do the next step 1. In the root console that was left open after issuing the install command and type konqueror. Browse to /usr/java and highlight it then hit Edit Move File from the new box browse to /usr/lib or type it into the path and click ok. 2. Next while your in /usr/java right click scroll down to Actions open a terminal here. Since konqueror is root so will the terminal be no need to su first. Type : ln -s /usr/lib/jre1_5_10 . The reason I did this is two fold 1a. Mandriva's rpm installs java in /usr/lib so thats where I wanted the new java. 2a. Third party software such as Azureus downloaded from their homepage looks for java in /usr/java. Now you have a soft link already, it saves alot of headaches later. 3. Now in the terminal type cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and type : ln -s /usr/lib/jre1_5_0_10/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so 3a. Optional but I like to copy the newly created link directly into my webbrowser(s) plugin folder(s) What i do is navigate my root konqueror to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugin and click on it once to highlight it and hit ctrl+c then navigate to /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.5.08 or 2.0.0.1 /plugin and hit ctrl+v to paste it in It's easier than cd'ing around in the terminal do the same if you use seamonkey. 4. Now close out all the open root konsoles and konqueror Launch your webbrowser and head to http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and hit the verify installation button to check your installation. If I haven't messed you up you should be greeted with : CONGRATULATIONS, you have the Latest version of Java! Grats I hope !! now lets do Azureus. 1. Download the latest from http://azureus.sourceforge.net/download.php 2. I created a new folder in home called apps to unzip azureus to. 3. After unzipping azureus navigate to that folder and inside it locate the azureus shell script. It looks like a text file but just says azureus and if you hold the mouse over it you will see azureus (3.1 KB) Shell Script at the bottom of konqueror. 4. right click on it and select open with any text editor you are familiar with. Personally I have gedit installed It's clean and doesn't complain when I run gedit as root 4a. Now right at the top you will see ######## CONFIGURATION OPTIONS ######## JAVA_PROGRAM_DIR="" # use full path to java bin dir, ex. "/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2/bin/" #PROGRAM_DIR="/home/username/apps/azureus" # use full path to Azureus bin dir ####################################### Change j2sdk1.4.2 to jre1_5_0_10 and save. Notice the path Thats why I created the soft link earlier.. The less you change things the less likely you are to have problems later on. 5. Now if you are the only person that will be using Azureus then you can go ahead and run it and configure it . Right click inside the folder scroll to Actions click on Open Terminal here and type ./azureus Look at step 9 if you want it in your menu. 6. If you want to use it globally then you will need to do a few more steps. One open a konsole su to root and type konqueror. 7. Highlight the azureus folder and move it to /usr/lib the same way Java was moved earlier. 8. Now right click on the star and select menu editor then open the Internet box then open the File Transfer box. 9. Now click on file new item and type azureus in the new name box and hit ok 10.In Description type Azureus, 10a. in Comment type file transfer, 10b. in Command type the path to the azureus shell script (you can browse to it as well by clicking on the folder icon on the right. Mine was '/home/larry/apps/azureus/azureus' if global it should be /usr/lib/azureus/azureus 10.c Now in work path type the path to the azureus folder or browse to it same as above. Mine was /home/larry/apps/azureus if global it should be /usr/lib/azureus 11. Check the enable launch feedback box. 12. In the blank looking box to the right of Description and Comment click on that and browse to the azureus folder then click on the bluefrog azureus.png and save. Now you should be set to run Azureus from the menu.

If you still have the iso on your harddrive perhaps you could use bittorrent to correct any bad data. You can google for midsummer to check the md5sum of the iso. Taken from the link I provided below it should read : md5sum : f2c570bda9589fe95db795e21d57ee43 I'm assuming this is your cd ? BitTornado works well for me in both XP and Mandy. One easy way to get permissions changed is to open a console and su to root. Then type konqueror. Now you can set all your permissions and tweak conf files ect from the comfort of a gui.

AMD ATHLON 64 3200+ should be fine my 3500 and 3700 work WAITEC STORM 48 (CD-ROM) MAXTOR 6L200P0 (Hard Disk) 1GB DDR SD-RAM I think would be fine too. You can run them all through Mandriva's hardware database and see what comes up. http://www.mandriva.com/hardware

There are a few One cd's that contain the ATI and Nvidia drivers so you can check out AIGLX or XGL . Look for the ones that are not labeled free. I thought you could use AIGLX with the xorg driver just by making sure the composite extention box was checked. But for Ogl and XGL you need the proprietary driver and make sure composite is unchecked for ATI.. you can check the XV extention but for me it when ever I tried playing a DVD the media player's would crash. I choose to install the free dvd. There are some bugs in the One cd's well atleast One KDE 1 and 3. 1 bug was an old one that configures your firewire as eth0. I can't remember what the other one was offhand.

I've been mucking around all weekend trying to find a way to tweak the xorg.conf file to improve my cards dismal performance. A fortunate round of Googling led me to a couple new sites. 1 in particular really turned things around for me. http://www.phoronix.net/forums/showthread.php?t=151 The above forum has a guy that goes by dgvirtual made a script thats a gui front end for aticonfig . It's really an awesome bit of scripting it can be found here : http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=43612 You'll need to install kommander if you don't have it already. It's a kde app and it's in the main repository under Graphical desktop/KDE . It's pretty easy to use.. it has to be for me to be able to use it :P I used it to save the original file with working AIGLX then went ahead and installed the plf drivers and used it to create a new working xorg.conf after backing that new one up you can litterally reinstall either back-up to toggle back and forth between AIGLX and XGL . I still have some minor tweaks left to do but it's worked out great. I went from a glxgear score of an average of 250 to : [larry@localhost ~]$ glxgears 42287 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8457.336 FPS 40190 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8037.881 FPS 40573 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8114.524 FPS 40574 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8114.646 FPS 40577 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8115.233 FPS 40561 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8112.111 FPS [larry@localhost ~]$ fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer 5128 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1025.600 FPS 5615 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1123.000 FPS 5820 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1164.000 FPS 5814 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1162.800 FPS 5805 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1161.000 FPS 5811 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1162.200 FPS A nice improvement concidering I'm running my desktop at 1280x1024 FSAA enabled set at 2 and using the XV video overylay extention. ppracer averages about 110 fps with FSAA set at 2 as well chromium is a rock solid 50 fps. Too bad from what I've read the author is going to abandon this script since he has bought a laptop with intel graphics. I wish I knew anything about scripting, I'll really miss this when it's no longer able to function. It works well with the plf 8.28.8 drivers.It's also been ported to a few other distros but the generic script I downloaded works fine. I can't really write a how to yet since I'm still exploring the settings. The only negative so far is a bit of spotting at the edges of the OGL screensavers and at the configuration screen for ppracer nt during the game. Not sure if it's a settingsuch as "UseFastTLS" "on" or due to my monitor being Generically configured for now. I've rambled on enough for now hehe enjoy ! ps. Hehe call it an exercise in futility. :P Anyways I changed my mind after the first One cd and I am downloading the dvd instead. As for bandwidth well Comcast takes enough of my money might as well use it :D I've tried the online updates but it doesn't fix the permission issues kde cannot upgrade the crystal fonts. screensaver is just black. Can't install the usb webcam drivers missing a .ko module even though I'm using the last 2 mm-kernels. The regular ones can't find all my memory even if I add 2048 to grub. I'm better off starting from scratch. Atleast i had a fun week learning to install the Ati drivers, Flash 7, Adobe Acrobat, Real Player 10 .. and trying out different media players for the web. Just an FYI "Sunna RC2" is out on some of the mirrors now. I'm downloading the Sunna kde cd's all 8 of them. Going to try making the dvd out of them. don't feel like installing the ati drivers again. There are also the free(no proprietary drivers)CD's available for KDE Gnome in One/cd and also the free dvd. Going to do a fresh install I have a few interesting privilege issues with my /usr/share folder and a few others being root only. I must have done something I shouldn't have again :P
