  1. He solved the problem by booting cd1 and 'upgrading' linux .. lol .. and that worked. Adding the path to the font in XF86config-4 didn't help and he didn't want to remove XFree and reinstall. Those kind of things affray newbies !! .. this guy don't want to touch Linux anymore at all. MOttS

    The answer is LM_SENSORS http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.ph...light=lmsensors http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.ph...light=lmsensors http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...light=lmsensors http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.ph...light=lmsensors Hope this help MOttS
  3. We have a problem with XFS here. Here is the output of 'service xfs status' Basically it means that XFS is dead but the process file still exist. I also tried "ps aux | grep xfs" and got: I don't know what this mean though. We didn't try to add the font's path in XF86config-4, do you think it would make any diff since xfs isn't even running correctly ? We tried to removed /var/pid/xfs.pid and 'service xfs status' returned: which means that xfs is dead but the system is locked .. or something similar to that. Thx guys for the help. Anything else ? 4. My friend's computer refuses to startx. We installed the nVidia drivers, modifed the XF8config-4 file, ran XFdrake --noauto --expert a couple of times and remodified XF86config-4 .. you see. But X still refuses to start. Here is the error in var/log/XFree86.0.log Here is the font section in the XF86config-4 file: Any ideas? MOttS

7 FANS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have 1 cpu fan and 1 power supply fan and that's it Hers is the ouput of 'sensors' The cpu temp is 'temp2'. As you can see it display 57 but if I go in the Mobo I get 46-47. I have a Duron 1300 with THAT fan. Where did you put all those fans? Just kidding here since I've nothing intelligent to bring but you could try that --> http://www.handyscripts.co.uk/egg.asp Regards MOttS
  6. This is what I had to do. Just run the 'sensors-detect' script and reboot.. voila! That's fun when it's so easy ;-) The problem is that not all the chips are supported or detected by the script. This is why we sometimes have to check what is supported and not and then load the required modules accordingly. MottS
  7. You are probably referring to this post: http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.ph...7177&highlight= If you were able to choose samba-server 2.2.7-2.1.mdk, you were probably able to choose the client too no? And yes, the config files (/etc/samba/smb.conf) are kept when you remove a package --> I would backup tho .. ;-) MOttS
  8. You have to boot the partimage cd to backup your linux partition. Otherwize you'll backup the /proc and /dev directory and they aren't necessary. So boot your partimage boot disk and mount the partition where you want to write the backup. For example, if you want to write the backup to a fat32 hda7 type mount -t vfat /dev/hda7 /mnt Then you can start the partimage prog by typing 'partimage'. Once the backup is finished, then reboot LInux and burn the image. MOttS
  9. I can't connect to this guy :-( Well you have his IP now. What else do you need? How could I know where this guy is physically? What about that? 0x83a4804c.arcnxx10.adsl-dhcp.tele.dk (131.164.128.76) MOttS
  10. Yeah that's funny .. I'd like to hack this guys .. grrrrr MottS

    Connections ???

The wizard in the MCC to set pppoe.conf has some difficulties to write everything correctly (from my experience). So I suggest you go check in /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf and check if ETH=eth0 and USER=someuser .. you see. Sometimes it leaves ETH="" .. I mean it leaves some variables empty. Once you checked that then you can start your connection with adsl-start and stop with adsl-stop If you use shorewall you can leave your computer alone.. it's secure enough. Don,t worry. MOttS
  12. Hi all I installed Apache to host my webpage about a month ago. Along with Apache I installed Webalizer to get nice and readable statistics from the access_log file. However, if I got get manually in those logs, I get weird stuff.. like if someone tried to execute stuff on my computer. Here it is: So first of all what's that? .. now how can I rehack this guys ? Also how can I prevent those attacks to happens? Thx MOttS
  13. Have you tried those suggestions? Did you reformat something?
  14. I got the exact same error 2 or 3 days ago when I compiled my kernel. Well, it wasn't exactly the same but instead of being related to ext3 is was related to reiserfs. I think that Norton Ghost altered the FS and now the kernel isn't able to mount the root partition (/). I really don't know what you could do other than try to boot from the 'failsafe' option or from the floppy you created when you first installed Mandrake. Have you changed your HD partitions since you made the image? Like did you reformated something? Because if you made an image of hda7 for instance and now you put that image in hda1 then you have to change some stuff before to be able to boot it properly. You should not use Norton Ghost btw, this isn't really a linux frendly program as you see. I sugest you use Partimage. This is what I use and this is really powerfull with Linux. It support EXT2 and 3, ReiserFS and many more as well as Fat32.. lol http://www.partimage.org/ MOttS
  15. Hey THX bvc!! .. I'm starting to understand what are the consequences of loading modules at boot time versus build them within the kernel. Is there a switch for that? And is it worth 3-5 sec. to enlarge the kernel, and not have the option to take them out of runtime? It's up to you. I was not thinking about the mod dep check but about the time the sound modules are loaded (enumerated above), the time my ethernet driver is loaded (8139too), the time it takes to load the usb driver (usbcore & usb-ohci) .. etc. We can turn that service off from the MCC since this we be supported within the kernel now. And anyway I need those drivers. Anyway... I'll make some test and if I don't see much diff I'm going to run the default kernel and that's it. Thanks for the info again BVC, Dolson and Arasubal (Welcore on this board man!!!). MOttSS
  16. So the key thing for running as fast as possible is to make the kernel as small as possible. Am I right? Also, boot time goes down when everything is compiled in the kernel. Am I right? (if we set the computer to NOT modprobe what is already in the kernel ... like the sound card driver, apg, network..) Ok so I'll keep the settings as they are and just remove stuff that I don't need. Thx! MOttS
  17. Feel lucky if you can get something out of the LM78 .. because this driver isn't supposed to be able to talk with the LM90 chip .. lol. I get weird readings too. Look at mine: As you can see, the case temp is 36 and the cpu temp is 55.5 according to the driver. But if I go in my BIOS I'll have 36-37 for the case (which is OK) but I'll get 46-47 for the CPU (which is 10 degrees off!). I don't know what is 209.5 tho .. lol I'm using GKRELLM to output the results and you can multiply the value given by the drivers by a constant. So I put 0.85 for 'temp2' so that I get an output of about 46-47, like in the BIOS, so I'm happy with that. You should install it. 'urpmi gkrellm' or search for gkrellm in RPMDRAKE. And yes.. everyone has an ISA but even though you don't have ISA slots .. lol MOttS
  18. Hi. I have a GA 71XE4. This a board completely different than you but here is how you should tackle your problem. According to this website --> http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ , your motherboard have the following sensors/chips. Now, according to this website --> http://secure.netroedge.com/~lm78/supported.html , you have to load the following modules to be able to talk with your sensors/chips However, from there --> http://www2.lm-sensors.nu/~lm78/newdrivers.html , LM90 seems not to be supported. So that doesn't sounds good ... You could try to modprobe it87 and run 'sensors' to see what's going on. Could you post the content of /etc/sysconfig/lm_sensors? When you type 'lsmod', do you see i2c-proc or i2c-dev or i2c-core or anything interesting? Also, you should run the service 'sensors' at boot. You can turn it on (if it is not already) in MCC->System->Services. Hope this help a bit MottS
  19. THX guys!!! .. I really appreciate you help here. I started like 3 or 4 days ago to tweak the mdk kernel so I'm a real newbies to that   . I have another question. If I don't care to NOT be able to upgrade things like sound modules or AGP (there is a mdk release almost every 6 months so ..), is it better to compile the kernel with all the stuff into it or keep them as modules? Another question .. I compiled the kernel yesterday with Creative SBlive! support as module. However, the MCC was set to load the following this at boot (lsmod told me that): However, that stuff wasn't in /lib/modules so I got an error and the sound wasn't working as expected. I knew that I had compiled EMU10k1 as a module so I 'modprobe emu10k1' and got that (lsmod): And my sound started to work just PERFECT! .. so why the default mandrake kernel load so much stuff for nothing? What about compiling those 4 modules WITH the kernel? .. this way I'm not gonna have to modprobe every boot.. thus faster boot. Is this applicable to other stuff too like my ethernet card driver (8139too) and sensors (w83781d, i2c-proc, i2c-amd756, i2c-core) and .. you see the thing? Thx again!!! I appreciate your help and suggestion. MOttS
  20. Sorry to reply to my own post here but I want to add something... I know pretty much all the modules that are loaded when I boot .. so is it better to compile them INTO the kernel or load them as a module? .. which one is better? Is it shorter to boot when they are compiled into the kernel since we don't have to 'load' them? Thx for explanations MOttS
  21. I'm making a .config file to recompile the mandrake kernel. I also trowing LOTS of stuff out with menuconfig.. 1) Is it better to load stuff into the kernel (*) or make them as a module (M) ? What is faster? 2) Why should I build so much mudules when I know exactly what is going to be loaded .. I'm thinking of soundcard modules and video card here. Any tips would be appreciated .. THX MOttS
  22. I have 3 partitions. According to diskdrake and KDiskFree, hda1 is reiserfs. The other one is reiserfs and my swap is .. swap. When I deleted windows I formated the WHOLE drive and put my image in hda1. But my image was made from a ext3 partition so that probably caused the problem. Also, my first line in /etc/fstab is /dev/hda1 / reiserfs defaults 1 1 Anyway. As I said, the only thing I had to do to be able to boot my new kernel is to modify the above fstab line to /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 and then run mkinitrd. Then I rewrite reiserfs instead of ext3 and it booted like a charm. btw, by default mkinitrd read /etc/fstab so .. So I'll keep /usr/src/linux-2.4.19-1custom because vmware needs it to build its vmmon module .. haha. Thx MottS
  23. I would pay $$$ maybe $$$$ for GTA3 or GTA-ViceCity for Linux !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MOttS
  24. Thx all for all you replies.. I really appreciate it. That's kind of sad... I would have like to start things up on one of my friends computer without installing anything like Apache or VNC .. lol Yes I know about VNC .. I'm using it to remotly connect to my desktop. But I still have to execute some stuff on my computer .. anyway. Thx MottS
  25. I GOT IT!!!!!!! I'm typing that with a custom kernel .. lol Ok so I compared .config and defconfig and they both have 2045 lines and same size (44k) .. so that was not the problem. Here is the EXACT error when I remove the 'append = quiet' option ..: So I started to think at Partimage. I recently deleted windows --> I partimaged my Linux partition (hda7 - ext3), refomated my HD in reiserfs and put back my image in hda1. So the problem is that partimage returned the partition to its original FS, ie: EXT3. When I type 'mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.19-1custom 2.4.19-1custom' it makes a part of the boot sequence by reading the /etc/fstab file. Since my fstab mounts reiserfs partitions, the initrd-2.4.19-1custom file wants to mount that too but doesn't find it because Partimage returned the FS to ext3 :-( ... But this is weird because KDiskFree tells me that hda1 is reiserfs. Anyway.. How could I make sure that the FS on hda1 is either reiserfs or ext3? .. I'm kind of lost now. The key thing is that if I write 'reiserfs' in the first line of /etc/fstab and type 'mkinitr ...' It doesn't work and gives the above error. However, If I wrtie 'ext3' in first line of fstab and make 'mkinitr ..' it works like a charm. BTW, can I remove the /usr/src/linux2.4.19-1custom directory since the kernel is compiled now? .. because this is kind of big (262 Megs). Why /usr/src/linux2.4.19-16mdk is 168 Meg big? .. I mean why have they a different size now? Now I can start to throw unnecessary stuff out of the kernel ! .. but that's another post. Thx MottS
