  1. durvish ThankYOU Here's to the urpmi urpmi and making my 10.1 shinier and even newer Ta very much
  2. Okey dokey But just 1 more quick Q if I can - what is this about bad sig's. Should we genarally be concerend about them or not (I had a similar issue not long ago and got told to say yes anyway, but if its bad - its bad is it not?) Just trying to learn my way around.
  3. Well, so far so good, but I've come across a problem which I've faced before and cos I'm a newbie it still strikes up concern. I selected mirrors for 10.1 official at esy Urpmi and downloaded (I'm using 10.1CE) I did the urpmi urpmi still as [su] I did init 3 - so far so good I typed urpmi --auto-select which gave me 161dependency downloads, I said yes, gimme em all - so far so good. About half way thru the list I get this message which is the problem: The following packages have bad signatures: /mnt/cdrom/media/main2/xlockmore-5.11-2mdk.i586.rpm: Invalid Key ID ((sha1) dsa sha1 md5 gpg GPG#26752624 OK) Do you want to continue installation ? (y/N) BTW it asked at the beginning of process to install cd2 but is downloading from the mirror sites - here's a sample of text immediately before the problem bad signature warning ftp://ftp.sunsite.org.uk/package/mandrake...0-1mdk.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.sunsite.org.uk/package/mandrake...0-1mdk.i586.rpm installing /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/spamassassin-3.0.0-1mdk.i586.rpm /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/perl-Mail-SpamAssassin-3.0.0-1mdk.i586.rpm Preparing... ################################################## 68:perl-Mail-SpamAssassin ################################################## 69:spamassassin ################################################## So I'm about halfway thru my dependecies list when I reach the problem. Questions: 1) I said n, but obviously I need them - what would be the effect of downloading packages with bad signatures 2) Would it be wise instead to start again and select different mirrors and try again? 3) Should I have removed the cd surces from, my rpm manager
  4. durvish, could you clarify something here please btw you've helped me in another thread along similar lines - cheers. So, to upgrade to 10.1 Official (and so access those security updates) I need to: Update sources etc at Easy Urpmi, followed by urpmi urpmi. No problems here. It's the following sequence I'm not sure of. Is this in failsafe mode as suggested by arctic (message 2, this thread) or as logging in a root user and having big red screen? I suspect the former? Maybe its a silly Q - but I really don't wanna screw up my system because I've misunderstood a concept here. Cheers.
  5. +++The post linked to in my previous message within this thread has just been updated, it seems using the 10.1 official mirrors at Easy Urpmi allows CE users to upgrade to official - and so be able to get access to security updates. I've not tried this yet - but will feedback into the thread linked above so that 2 threads are not repeated+++
  6. So I can upgrade my 10.1CE by selecting the 10.1Official mirrors instead at Easy Urpmi?! Excellent - I'll try this out, being mindful of the potential possibilty that my system may well get screwed :o Thanks for this tip - at worst, I revert back to mdk10 and then maybe have to write to
  7. Or, you could check out this great web site (see under> aquisition) http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/acquisition.html Did a quick google which brought up these sites http://www.linuxforum.com/linux_downloads/72.php http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9877
  8. I think it depends on which version of Mandrake you use i.e an Official/Community edition. I'm using 10.1 CE but I am unable to get any security updates - see my thread I started here Also, using Easy Urpmi does not allow 10.1CE security updates - though it will for 10.1 official.
  9. Well there are certainly security advisories for 10.1 But I'm assuming these are now only compatible with Official as I am still unable to get to a mirror. I have also looked at Easy Urpmi - and whilst you can get security updates from Official, the download is not an option when selecting 10.1CE as your OS. Security updates, it appears are not an option for CE users. Back to 10 it looks like
  10. I have just installed 10.1CE (3CDS from a Linux magazine) very nice, thankyou very much. Installation went OK and configuring to the Internet went without any hassles. However, I do like to update asap. This is where my problem lies. I log into MCC>Software Managament>rpm Media Manager where only the 3 installation CDs are listed. There is no 'update_source' option to update from an FTP mirror (as there is in 10). So, I click on the 'add' button and select 'Security updates' Selecting this option inserts 'update_source' within the name field. MandrakeSoft website is contacted for the mirrors list, but no matter which mirror I choose, I get the following Error Warning: It's impossible to retrieve the list of new packages from the media 'update_source'. Either this update media is misconfigured, and in this case you should use the Software Manager to remove it and re add it in order to reconfigure it, either it is currently unreachable and you should retry later However, whilst all this was going on, MDK10 running on another box was succesfully downloading updates. I even waited for this to finish - and with 10.1CE it still gives the same error warning. Any ideas. Cheers.
  11. At the command line, try tying 'startx ' (without the apostrophe's) this should load up the gui. See what that does. Also, here should be helpful (its for mdk10, but a lot will be relevant)
  12. I looked at the BIOS and nothing seemed apparentlty untoward. I remembered I had an old PC not doing anything, so I thought I'd give the graph card a try - thinking that with a reboot, MDK would recognise the change in H/W and prompt a reconfig. Well, I was wrong - I switched PC back on, and there was no boot up process (no beeps) - though the combo CD/DVD light was flashing. I tried a couple of times to reboot - same thing, no boot up beeps, machine is clearly running - I can hear it and light are on. No screen on the monitor though - take the cable out and it brings up prompt box to 'check video cable'. The monitor is OK - it works perfectly on another box. Fed up, I re installed the original graph card - and the same problem persists - i.e. no boot up beeps/no screen. I've swapped the jumper settings on the mobo - tried 1&2/2&3/none - and it makes no difference at all. Mobo is an Intel SE440BX-2 with a P3 How can I reclaim my PC - even with the original problems stated at the beginning of this thread. +++I'VE FIXED THIS ELEMENT OF THIS THREAD - SEEMS I MUST HAVE DISLODGED SOMETHING INSIDE WHEN TAKING OUT THE GRAPH CARD - I DOUBLE CHECKED EVERYTHING, MADE SURE EVERYTHING FIT SNUG - REBOOTED, AND VOILA, MAN THAT WAS SCARY, THOUGHT I'D TOTALLY SCREWED UP  +++ Cheers.
  13. Pants! Got approx 1 1/2 hours of use before the darn thing froze me out again. So, need to search out those issues related to ATI card. This fix-it job's one for the w/e - need to get some serious work done in the meantime. Back to the box running 9.2
  14. Thanks arctic for pointing me in the right direction. The first thing I have done is go inot MCC to find out what graphics card I have - you are absolutely right, it's an ATI - ATI Mach64 Utah to be precise. On both PCs I did a standard install and ran with the default settings, this was not a problem with machine 1 , and I did not think it would be for machine 2. So, after your reply to suggest the possible nature of the problem, as a first step, in MCC> hardware, I chose to run the config tool on this card. I've now been running for about 50 minutes without any loss of functionality - fingers and toes crossed. I have another box with exatly the same hardware set up as this one to be installed with mdk10, so I'll be aware of any graphics card config issues during it's install.
  15. Hi all I've just installed mdk10 on 2 PCs on the home network. 1 works fine. My second however is not good. I can only get about 5/10 minutes service, before I notice the mouse cursor disappears, and the entire system freezes before my very eyes. It's not in standby/suspend mode - I don't lose the graphics but I can't do anything, I lose total functionality - and mouse movements/key combinations (such as enter or alt+fkeys) fail to resume functionality. The only way out is through doing a reboot. Any suggestions on what the problem might be, or what settings to double check? Cheers.
  16. I think you need to configure CUPS differently because your running Windoze/SAMBA. See documentation at CUPS, the pathway from the CUPS WWW admin tool is: Documentation>FAQs>Network Questions>How Do I Use SAMBA With CUPS Also, for your printer, check out TWiki page here which might prove useful. I don't have a printer over a SAMBA network so hope these are helpful,if you haven't seen them already (though I have a printer over CUPS/Linux network and was amazed at how quickly it set up :P)
  17. To quickly summarise how I eventually got this working: I renamed my directories and associations in etc/exports to read 'shared.stuff' removing the space. Renaming the directory actually re-set the directory not to share - so right clicking on the directory>share> I needed to re set the radio button for it to share over the network. Then I did as advised: mkdir -p /mnt/remote_shares Once its done, issue this command as root: mount 192.168.0.4:/home/username/shared.stuff /mnt/remote_shares And it worked. Prior to this last set of instructions, as noted, I was having all sorts of issues with permissions. Thanks for the link, will be following this through - definately. Got me-self a couple of books and magazines too . Thanks ever so, once again.
  18. Hi feralertx I guess I was getting frustrated with the output (permissions denied) I was trying to think may way around this - I'm new to all this command line/setting up - years of pointy clicky M$ i guess - not being required to think! Yet I knew from some of the commands it's partly set up, but it's been like pulling teeth trying to actually access the directory from the client machine. The directory on the server is set in home/username/shared.stuff Same on the client (though the directory is empty - I want to view the contents from server)...maybe this is where I go wrong. Like I say, it's all so new, and I was thinking because I manged to set up print serving/internet sharing it would have been kinda 'straightforward' and I therefore jumped in at the deep end I think! Then got myself confused. Anyway again, I followed your latest advise and ... :woot_jump: :bounce8: A VERY VERY VERY BIG TO YOURSELF AND GOWATOR Thank you both. A weight has been lifted. 1 more Q - why couldn't I access the dir from my dir on client? What is 'remote_share' - not heard of it b4
  19. I thought, aha, maybe it's because I've not instructed the # command, where on the server the shared.stuff directory is. So I tried these 2 permatations (don't know if they are valid?) # mount 192.168.0.4:/home/username/shared.stuff /mnt/shared.stuff mount: RPC: Timed out and also # mount 192.168.0.4:/home/username/shared.stuff /mnt/home/shared.stuff mount: RPC: Timed out Don't know if these are useful It's all getting very confusing from this end!!
  20. Hey folks, back again Well, I amended my directories (no spaces), edited etc/exports and watched my command: this is the output from client [su] # mount 192.168.0.4:/shared.stuff /mnt/shared.stuff mount: 192.168.0.4:/shared.stuff failed, reason given by server: Permission denied Looked back on the server directory, and noticed that after changing the name, it reverted back to 'Not Shared' - so I reconfigured it again. In the permissions tab, out of desperation really, I checked all access permissions - still no joy. Any other way of looking at why permissions are being denied? It feels so close...yet so far
  21. Hi feralertx after 12 hours on this yesterday I needed a break. Back at work today, so will be back on the case this evening! This is what I'll be looking at doing - renaming 'shared stuff' directory to shared_stuff (or whatever - without any spaces - thanks for letting me know about that). Be aware - space required in the mount command. One question. When openig etc/exports, it has two lines with two different directories (share asnd shared stuff) - as I'll be renaming line 2 (to shared_stuff) should I delete line 1 here's the original output and edit line as the ls output shows, there isn't a directory called share, so I don't know why this is even listed. Big thanks also to Gowator for all the help. Hopefully all will be put right tonight.
  22. :o :o it's really been a lonnng day - I had to escape at 10.00 4 an hour a I know I'll be dreaming of this! Need to be at work 2morrow (day off 2day) but for all the support. Guess I'll be checking in 2morow. G'dnight all.
  23. I have no idea why two folders are showing (share/shared stuff) the latter is the correct one. On message 8 here I posted the original script followed by what what i had edited. The output from ls /home/username is: Desktop/ Documents/ shared stuff/ tmp/ The client command/s I'm using [su] are # mount 192.168.0.4:/shared stuff/mnt/shared stuff but this gives me the following output Usage: mount -V : print version mount -h : print this help mount : list mounted filesystems mount -l : idem, including volume labels So far the informational part. Next the mounting. The command is `mount [-t fstype] something somewhere'. Details found in /etc/fstab may be omitted. mount -a [-t|-O] ... : mount all stuff from /etc/fstab mount device : mount device at the known place mount directory : mount known device here mount -t type dev dir : ordinary mount command Note that one does not really mount a device, one mounts a filesystem (of the given type) found on the device. One can also mount an already visible directory tree elsewhere: mount --bind olddir newdir or move a subtree: mount --move olddir newdir A device can be given by name, say /dev/hda1 or /dev/cdrom, or by label, using -L label or by uuid, using -U uuid . Other options: [-nfFrsvw] [-o options] [-p num]. For many more details, say man 8 mount . If I use an underscore (shared_stuff) I get this # mount 192.168.0.4:/shared_stuff/mnt/shared_stuff mount: can't find 192.168.0.4:/shared_stuff/mnt/shared_stuff in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab If I run this command 'showmount -e 192.168.0.4' then this is the output # showmount -e 192.168.0.4 Export list for 192.168.0.4: /home/username/share * /home/username/shared stuff 192.168.0.1 (everyone) so it recognises it - good. I've been reading that if i then follow this with the following commnads I can mount the exported filesystem: mkdir /imported mount <server name>: /<diectory name> /imported this is the output # mount 192.168.0.4:/shared_stuff /imported mount: 192.168.0.4:/shared_stuff failed, reason given by server: Permission denied think I may need to start from scratch? Cheers.
  24. Here's the report as requested. /home/username/share *(ro,all_squash,sync) "/home/username/shared stuff 192.168.0.1" (rw) Cheers. Much appreciated.
  25. I've amended the services as you suggest but still, I am unable to gain access from a client computer. I don't understand why I have been denied access because of permissions. Doing the test from a client - it appearsn to recognise that there is a directory, but will not/cannot view it. I have also, on the server created: /sharedfiles and imported a document but i still am unable to view anything from a client. Maybe I screwed up somewhere?
