Yes, tyme is correct, you need not do anything. I went from an Celeron 600/Intel 8210 to and AthlonXP 1900/VIA K7 without doing anything or having any problems. The upgrade option would be for something like a soundcard or videocard, but then there are other utils for that. The only thing I ever found the upgrade option useful for was if you fry a filesytem config or sys critical packages, or somehting drastic. It's about as useful as harddrake.
That wouldn't be a clean install. I think you knew that, you just worded it that way.You can try to boot the machine and if it runs into problems, you can still choose Ix's upgrade method or a clean install. -
Other than running alsamixergui and tinkering and not setting PCM above 2/3, there's nothing you can do, that I'm aware of.

that's been a big...long running issue
many threads on the ubuntu forum about that
for most with nvidia, it seems to be
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
in xorg.conf. Comment it out or remove it.

maybe it had to do with the /boot partition? ...which is useles...or should I say, not at all necessary or beneficial.

rpm -qa | grep kernel
will give you the names of all kernel stuff installed

I agree... any thoughts on partitioning and file systems for these?
That depends on many things.
How often do you backup and what do you backup....what do you expect to be able to restore should there be a major prob?
Win
Ix has well stated a separate page file partition, but that is only necessary for intense apps or old computers.
I never use ntfs, but I guess it's a good idea for most people.
I don't do the separate partition for program files anymore either. Too much hassle in repair, and you end up fixing things continually, til the next disaster.
The dual storage fat partition is also something I do, but it needs to be backed up regularly, incase of corruption, so I make several of these so making backups is quicker and easier.
Lin
Same.....what do you bkup, and what do expect to be able to fix?
I use reiserfs and have for years w/o any issues.
I no longer bother with diff /usr /tmp and /var. Time in making backups is much longer than just reinstalling. Preferences are in $HOME anyway, so I just back that up. If / is big enough then all is well.

no...just using a distro with a handicap
...but then, it must be nice to use pixmap themes w/o cairo bogging gnome down
-
xp= all master
linux= all slave
...only way to go!

Mandriva 2006 says that I need libgtkextra-x11-1.1.so.0 as a dependency of gnubg.
Where do I get it, or does anyone know whether it's part of a different package that I can install???
regards
John
In the future, here's the quick way to find out if it is available
localhost:/# urpmf libgtkextra-x11-1.1.so.0 libgtk+extra-2_1.1:/usr/lib/libgtkextra-x11-1.1.so.0 libgtk+extra-2_1.1:/usr/lib/libgtkextra-x11-1.1.so.0.0.0 localhost:/#
if it returns nothing try shortening it
localhost:/# urpmf libgtkextra-x11-1
localhost:/# urpmf libgtkextra-x11
if you get nothing at this point it means it is not available in your sources. Add sources. When you find it (as above), just
urpmi libgtk+extra-2_1.1

That's a pain in the ......
Don't forget that you have to run kcontrol as root to make the change. Wait, or do you?....you may get a popup asking for the root password if you try to change this as a user in kcontrol?
-
it used to be in the kde control center>login manager???>users??? and check off root. I don't use kde and haven't for a long time so I do not know if it is still there, or where?

fixed a bug in the ish-metacity series and added this version, but gnome-look is not responding so I will have to update later.
